Vance was away in Oman today, and there was no evidence left of any chaos navigation. The only record left was a recording in Tapped In which Vance has posted below. It seems that the main topic of discussion was color and its connotations in different cultures, though the weather was a secondary topic. Susanne was cooking in the kitchen. Ying Lan was still waiting for her visa to the USA. James was about to leave for Spain and Wales. Maggi was feeling better after a bout with back problems. Perhaps someone who was there would like to add a commentary?
Tapped In chat logs
Started recording in Reception (#268)[TappedIn] at Sun Dec 16 03:40:21 2001 PST.

BJB says, "hi, Michael. G'day"
MichaelAC exclaims, "G'day mate!"
MichaelAC says, "Arthur - nice to see you here."
MichaelAC exclaims, "I thought I'd come early today. That way I'll get to bed earlier!"
ArthurM says, "Folks, I am multi-tasking, before noon here, tidying up my working space in the days before Christmas ..."
BJB [HelpDesk] smiles and nods...hard to meet all the needs of all the time zones! Crack of dawn for me
ArthurM asks, "Where are you, Michael?"
MichaelAC says, "And isn't it nice to know that a Christmas break is coming...I'm in Australia Arthur."
BJB says, "Hi, Karin. welcome"
MichaelAC says, "We traded some messages in the wimba forum last week."
BJB [to Karin [guest]]: "May I help you with something?"
ArthurM I'm in Ireland, at a reasonable time of the day
ArthurM says, "Yes, Michael, I recall now"
DanB has arrived.
Seeing Eye follows DanB to
here.
ArthurM says, "Hello Karin"
DanB exclaims, "Hello, all!"
MichaelAC says, "So today would be a day off for you Arthur (as it is for me)"
BJB [to Karin [guest]]: "are you here for a webheads discussion or to visit TAPPED IN?"
BJB [HelpDesk] waves hi to Dan
MichaelAC says, "Hello Dan"
DanB says, "Hello. BJ and Michael."
ArthurM says, "Michael, Sunday USED TO BE a day of rest here, but now the purple of commerce invades its peacefulness ..."
BJB [to Karin [guest]]: "to talk type what you want to say in the window next to the word SAY and then press return"
MichaelAC asks, "the *purple* of commerce?"
BJB . o O ( very colorful phrase )
You hear a quiet popping sound; SRI_111 [guest] has disconnected.
ArthurM ..s a rather poetic phrase, michael ..s.
You hear a quiet popping sound; ArthurM has disconnected.
MichaelAC exclaims, "OK....I'll contemplate that for a while!"
BJB says, "opps..poor Arthur. He has a heck of a time with his connection"
MichaelAC exclaims, "Arthir's gone!"
BJB [HelpDesk] wonders if Purple refers to royalty. We'll have to wait for Arthur to come back
MichaelAC asks, "To refresh my memory Dan - where are you? the US somewhere?"
ArthurM has connected.
DanB says, "Wisconsin, Michael, in a small city."
BJB . o O ( it's even earlier for Dan than for me )
MichaelAC says, "OK"
BJB [HelpDesk] waves welcome back to Arthur
BJB [HelpDesk] wonders if Arthur should try connecting with a text client
ArthurM says, "Sorry, fp;ls, my fingers got overexcited and I ended up out in the cold"
MichaelAC exclaims, "Well Arthur - it's not just the purple, but the Internet that encroaches on our free days!"
ArthurM says, "the purple of commerce" is a phrase in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST by Oscar wilde (Who is a VERY remote family connection, it is said)"
MichaelAC smiles at Arthur
BJB asks, "and what does he mean by this, Arthur?"
BJB . o O ( what is the the significance of purple )
ArthurM says, "probably a Latin reference, BJB, but I am not sure"
ArthurM says, "I'll look it up iand get back to you :-)"
BJB says, "cool...I would be very interested...must be the art teacher in me"
MichaelAC exclaims, "It's almost Shakespearean in its obligueness!"
BJB says, "also might be a good webheads topic...color in our language"
MichaelAC says, "Yeh - thinking in colours is an interesting concept."
BJB . o O ( yellow streak of cowardice, mad red, feeling blue, etc )
ArthurM says, "I will google it and seem what I find - back in a minute"
You hear a quiet popping sound; ArthurM has disconnected.
BJB . o O ( Arthur has not mastered the art of multiple screens or his computer is unable to cope with them )
MichaelAC exclaims, "Some people associate people with particular colours - yes BJ!"
MichaelAC exclaims, "As Arhtur is Irish I just think GREEN!"
DanB says, "I've also heard that colors influence emotions."
BJB says, "I do a lesson on colors and the feelings that are associated with them"
BJB says, "some are cultural, some are universal"
MichaelAC asks, "Do you believe that Dan?"
DanB says, "Yes, I've heard that different colors symbolize different things in various cultures."
BJB says, "some cultures wear black for mourning and some wear white"
DanB says, "yes, Michael, I do."
MichaelAC says, "Personally I am sceptical but I am not an artist and I have never been trained to think like that"
ArthurM has connected.
MichaelAC says, "not a visual artist anywaay"
DanB says, "Someone did a research study on the relationship of colors to American emotions. When the economy is bad, marketers increase the use of blue in packaging for food items."
BJB says, "you should find the Dr. Seuss book, My Many Colored Days."
MichaelAC asks, "And blue signifies?"
BJB says, "It's a child's picture book, but gives you some idea of how color can be used to identify feelings"
DanB says, "Calm. I've checked this out, and found it to be true."
MichaelAC says, "I used to read Dr Seuss books to the kids but I don't remember that one."
ArthurM says, "The Phoenicians extracted purple dye from the murex shell and used it as a basis for the development of trade in the ancient Mediterranean."
ArthurM says, "so now we know."
BJB says, "I think of blue as freedom, but some people feel blue is how you feel when you're sad"
MichaelAC exclaims, "Thanks Arthur - now all we nedd to know is what a murex shell is!"
BJB [to Arthur]: "and the dye was very expensive...only royalty could afford it"
BJB . o O ( which is where royal purple comes from )
DanB exclaims, "Yes, I was surprised at the use of blue to induce calmness--and increase sales!"
ArthurM asks, "Different subject - Has anyone experience of WIMBA?"
ArthurM says, "www.wimba.com"
BJB says, "I listened to your's and Michael's messages...but I've not posted anything"
DanB says, "I listened to all the messages, but haven't bought a mic yet."
ArthurM says, "I was in County donegal this week with some MSc students, who have resoponded enthusiastically."
DanB asks, "To wimba?"
ArthurM says, "Vance had introduced me to it via ELTOC and WebHeads last month"
MichaelAC says, "Keep us posted Arthur. I keep tryint to get people to use it but so many don't have mikes and speakers"
ArthurM says, "you can see moreat www.arthurmckeown.com/wimba Use right click to access it."
DanB asks, "Did these students indicate why they were enthusiastic?"
ArthurM says, "Dan, because it has more immediacy than merely raw email."
SusanneN has arrived.
DiaLog follows SusanneN
to here.
TimeLog follows SusanneN to here.
ArthurM says, "Though it will complement rather than replace email and discyussion obards"
SusanneN [busy in kitchen, coming soon!] hurries back to her duties
BJB [HelpDesk] hugs Susanne good day
ArthurM says, "And there seem to be some minor technical problems"
MichaelAC asks, "Wimba also has voice email. Have you tried that Arthur?"
ArthurM says, "but we are getting there"
DanB says, "I asked because I'm wondering if there isn't some use for business meetings, etc. for these communications."
ArthurM says, "Michael - yes, just a bit."
MichaelAC says, "Absloutely Dan"
ArthurM says, "YES Dan"
MichaelAC says, "brb"
ArthurM says, "You can agree a time, like WebHeads, wwhen folk can all be online at the same time."
DanB says, "Especially, I think, because of the WTC and also globalization."
ArthurM says, "And have folk seen www.u4all.com which uses Interwise technology for synchronous voice"
BJB says, "I'm going to put a url in the transcript for later...it's a great sight for learning about color and its effects"
BJB says, "http://www.colormatters.com/entercolormatters.html"
JohnSte has arrived.
White Book of Tarkin Ru
follows JohnSte to here.
BJB [HelpDesk] waves hello to John
JohnSte says, "Hi, ya'll"
ArthurM says, "Thanks, BJB, I'll look later"
DanB says, "No, Arthur, I haven't seen that yet."
DanB asks, "Hi, John. Are you home yet?"
JohnSte says, "Yep. I'm using what has become my daughter's computer, and it is giving me mucho problemos."
ArthurM says, "Dan, it is worth investigating; keep in touch to discuss impressions, potential applications, etc."
DanB . o O ( I'm green with envy at BJ's multi-tasking abilities )
DanB says, "I certainly will, Arthur."
JohnSte says, "All I have here is tapped in - My daughter has reconfigured my computer drastically."
DanB says, "John's Spanish is improving. Must be Webheads."
JohnSte says, "Yep."
JohnSte says, "I'm only here for about an hour today. My wife wants me to go with her to visit some family this morning."
MichaelAC says, "I'm back"
DanB asks, "Is there any special topic on today's agenda?"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Michael."
MichaelAC says, "Hi ther John"
MichaelAC says, "No topic that i know of...."
BJB [to Dan]: "did you want to introduce a topic?"
DanB exclaims, "No, I just wondered. usually, my mind wanders all over the place!"
BJB says, "the link I showed earlier might be a good starter for a topic"
JohnSte asks, "What link is that, BJ?"
BJB says, "there is an interesting article where a person describes where he is and you are to guess his location"
BJB asks, "May I project or will that bump some of you offline?"
MichaelAC says, "Ok with me."
JohnSte says, "Ok with me, too"
DanB says, "Fine with me, too."
BJB says, "when you get the projection go to the feature article, culture matters"
BJB [HelpDesk] projects the URL: http://www.colormatters.com/entercolormatters.html
You hear a quiet popping sound; DanB [Away] has disconnected.
You hear a quiet popping sound; JohnSte [Webhead] has disconnected.

DanB says, "I'm back. Don't know what happened."
BJB [HelpDesk] cheers for Arthur. Did you get the projection?
JohnSte says, "Just right click and then open it in a new window. It really made tapped in look interesting, but I couldn't type anything."
BJB says, "hi, Ying. welcome"
ArthurM says, "Yes, bjb"
ying [guest] says, "hi"
DanB says, "Looks like an informative site."

ying [guest] asks, "how are you today?"
BJB [to Dan]: "did you guess the nationality of the person who wrote the article?"
DanB asks, "No, I never got there. Which nation?"
ArthurM exclaims, "I have just seen the colour / science link, which ties in neatly with something I am working on in my day job - THNAKS!"
JohnSte says, "I'm fine. The site does look interesting, but I'm still reading it."
BJB [HelpDesk] smiles..you're welcome, Arthur
BJB [to Dan]: "go to http://www.colormatters.com/news_dec01/feature.html and read part 1"

JohnSte says, "I have to go visit family with my wife later this morning."
MichaelAC has connected.
JohnSte says, "The site looks like something I can use with my students when I get back to giving class in August."
BJB exclaims, "welcome back, Michael!"
JohnSte says, "Welcome again, Michael."
MichaelAC exclaims, "That was intersting - the site loaded in here in the chat window!"
JohnSte says, "It did with me, too. I had to right click and open it in a new window."
BJB . o O ( part 3 of the cultural matters article explains some of the cultural interpretations of color )
MichaelAC says, "And I couldn't get it out without logging off."
SusanneN asks, "How weird, Michael; in the Tapestry window?"
MichaelAC says, "Yep"
JohnSte says, "Neither could I."
SusanneN [to BJ]: "I am still reading"
MichaelAC says, "Only when I hit the color matters link. The kothe site opened in a new window as usual"
MichaelAC says, "I mean the mother site.."
MichaelAC says, "It's a great article. Obviously colour is very inmportant in Pakistan."
MichaelAC asks, "Did anyone guess the country?"
BJB [HelpDesk] nods to Michael. I think color is important to all cultures.
SusanneN exclaims, "In China we saw weddings at our hotel - with pretty red brides!"
BJB says, "I didn't. I thought it was the American south west"
JohnSte says, "Yes, it is very important, even if people don't consciously recognize it."
DanB says, "Green, for example, has come to stand for the global environmental movement, I think."
You hear a quiet popping sound; MichaelAC has disconnected.
BJB [to Ying [guest]]: "are there words in your language that use color to show feelings?"
ying [guest] says, "Out traditional wedding grown is red, but In Taiwan, bride's grown is white now."
JohnSte says, "But here in PR it still has a connotation denoting a belief in Independence."
ying [guest] says, "We have been influenced by the west wedding custome."
MichaelAC has connected.
ying [guest] says, "We bride is still in red shoes."
MichaelAC says, "It did it again - very strange"
BJB [to Ying [guest]]: "white wedding gowns symbolize purity in the western culture."
JohnSte says, "Hmmm. Here brides usually where all white, even the shoes."

ying [guest] says, "We have to keep our traditional colour .. at least red shoes."
BJB asks, "what does red symbolize, Ying?"

ying [guest] says, "In our traditional custome."
BJB [HelpDesk] smirks at John
SusanneN says, "White is a color of sorrow for the dead in China, in Denmark people use black for sorrow (but now less than before)"
ying [guest] says, "John... but you have been married for over thirty years..."
SusanneN says, "Some Danes (population of Denmark ) are obsessed by red and white because our national banner is red& white; you will find a lot of litle danish banners for many celebrations, especially at birthdays."
SusanneN says, "We have a football cheeer..."
JohnSte says, "I didn't say I agree with them, Ying. I am very happy to be married."
SusanneN says, "We are red, we are white, we are Danish dynamite!""

Parrot follows VennyS to
here.
VennyS [:)] bows gracefully.
DanB says, "I hope Susanne gets a mic so I can hear her Danish cheer."
BJB [HelpDesk] bows to Venny
JohnSte says, "That is something that is also discussed in many web-design classes. You should be careful that your background color does not have a negative meaning for other cultures."
JohnSte says, "Hi, Venny."
BJB [to VennyS]: "Ying was just telling us about the meaning of red and white in your culture"
ying [guest] asks, "Have you talked to Vance today?"
VennyS [:)] bows gracefully.
BJB [to Ying [guest]]: "Vance is on holiday"

DanB . o O ( meets )
MichaelAC says, "I was wondering the same..."
SusanneN says, "Watching people leaving a football match in Denmark is like seeing a release from the madhouse or a carnival - they are all dressed up and face painted in incredible costumes according to their favorite club, shouting and cheering."
JohnSte says, "I never have found it, and I didn't finish the class, but I wonder it that is the reason many pages are light grey."
VennyS says, "in Peking opera, there is special character -- painted face character."
SusanneN exclaims, "Oh, hello Venny!"
BJB [HelpDesk] listens to Venny
VennyS says, "in the painted face characters, the red means loyalty"

VennyS says, "in the painted face characters, the black is righteous"
SusanneN exclaims, "The opera masks are just incredible, as are their stories told mostly by body language (for those who do not understand the language!"
VennyS says, "the most intersting is the color white is crafty"
BJB says, "hi, Elizabeth. Welcome"
SusanneN says, "So when you see a character and his face color, you will already know who he is, loyal righteous or crafty"

BJB . o O ( then we'll let the webheads tell you about their group )
BJB [to Elizabeth [guest]]: "I'm going to project a url"
BJB says, "when I do a new browser window will pop open for you"
elizabeth [guest] says, "ok"

You hear a quiet popping sound; DavidW has disconnected.
ying [guest] says, "hello David."
ying [guest] says, "he is gone."
DanB exclaims, "I'm off also. Have a good week everyone!"
BJB [HelpDesk] waves bye to Dan. You too.
SusanneN exclaims, "Bye, Dan!"
You hear a quiet popping sound; DanB has disconnected.
MargaretD arrives from nowhere.
MargaretD's
personal recorder follows MargaretD to here.
SusanneN says, "We might see our dear Maggi here soon"
BJB [HelpDesk] waves hi to Maggi
SusanneN exclaims, "There she is! Welcome, Maggi!"
BJB says, "hi, James"
JamesSi says, "Hi everyone"
SusanneN says, "And welcome to james, too"
MargaretD says, "Hi everyone"
JamesSi says, "Hi Susanne"
BJB says, "we had a lively group of webheads here earlier, but they are now gone, Maggi and James"
JamesSi says, "I'm just here for a few minutes to wish everyone a very happy Christmas"
MargaretD says, "I get sent automatically to my office first"
BJB [to Maggi]: "would you prefer landing here when you log in?"
SusanneN says, "Is nobody doing anything parallel with other technologies today? Amazing"
MargaretD says, "I know how to do that BJB but thanks"
BJB [HelpDesk] nods to Maggi
JamesSi says, "I'm sorry I missed the chat earlier. I had to go shopping! It's about the only time we had free before we go away for the holiday."
BJB says, "happy holidays to you, too, James"
SusanneN asks, "How is your back, Maggi, better now I hope?"
MargaretD says, "Merry Christmas to you too James"
SusanneN says, "James, you will have to read the log instead"
SusanneN exclaims, "Merry christmas, James!"
MargaretD says, "yes Susanne it is...hurts less"
ying [guest] says, "Hi. Maggi..."
ying [guest] says, "Are you o.k.? I have not seen you for two weeks."
MargaretD asks, "hi Ying...how are you?"
ying [guest] says, "or three weeks. I can not remember."
ying [guest] says, "I am tired now..."
JamesSi says, "I won't be here for a couple of weeks now; we're off to Spain next Saturday to visit Mary's family and then to Wales at New Year for a week or so, where it's not always easy to get to a computer."
MargaretD says, "I'm fine Ying"
SusanneN [to Maggi]: "No fun to feel bad during the holiday, you'd better recover quickly"
JamesSi asks, "Have you been working hard, Ying?"
ying [guest] says, "I heard that Your back was killing you..."
ying [guest] says, "No...."
SusanneN [to James]: "Enjoyyour travelling!"
ying [guest] says, "Just need some sleep..."
ying [guest] says, "Jame,,, have a nice trip."
MargaretD exclaims, "lol...it didn't kill me but it sure hurt!"
SusanneN asks, "You know what the work *killing* means in Danish?"
MargaretD says, "have a safe trip James...there's a cold front down here"
ying [guest] says, "Wa..."
JamesSi says, "It's pretty cold and miserable here as well."
BJB [HelpDesk] listens to Susanne tell us what "killing" means in Danish
MargaretD says, "so what else is new....-)"
SusanneN says, "Kids do not believe it when they hear the English meaning - a *kitten* could never be a killer"
SusanneN [webhead] smirks (like BJ does now and then)
ying [guest] asks, "kitten is a young cat, isn't it?"
JamesSi says, "That's right, Ying."
MargaretD asks, "yes...so it is killing in Danish Susanne?"
ying [guest] says, "I did not get it..."
SusanneN says, "Yes, a young cat is called a *killing* in Danish, but a cat is just a *kat*"
JamesSi says, "I'd better go and get ready..."
ying [guest] says, "me, too."
SusanneN asks, "In German it is Katzchen I think?"
JamesSi says, "Some German friends of ours have invited us for a gluhwein party."
MargaretD exclaims, "ok James...ho ho ho and off you go!"
BJB [HelpDesk] smiles...sounds festive, James.
JamesSi says, "Auf Wiedersehen..."
MargaretD says, "yes Susanne..ktzchen"
SusanneN says, "In Denmark as well, people often serve Gloegg in december (like Gluhwein)"
JamesSi exclaims, "Froliche Weinachten!"
MargaretD says, "oops...the umlauts don't work here"
SusanneN [to Maggi]: "Tapped In does not support umlauts"
You hear a quiet popping sound; JamesSi [Webhead] has disconnected.
SusanneN [webhead] grins, we're twins
ying [guest] says, "my dear firends, I have to go now."
BJB [HelpDesk] thinks it's time to go get the laundry started and breakfast made
ying [guest] says, "Nice to talk to you."
SusanneN exclaims, "Dear Ying, see you soon!"
BJB [HelpDesk] bows to Ying..sleep well.
ying [guest] says, "see you next weeks."
MargaretD says, "bye Ying and sweet dreams ^^-^^"
ying [guest] says, "Take care ... for maggi."
