The chat today branched into many cyber-locations as usual. Sue found Vance in Yahoo and got him into Tapped In by telling him people were talking about him there. While Rif in Turkey was preparing for a videoconference with Claire Bradin, Phil B was showing us around http://www.stuffedincommon.com where BJB and Susanne started their own chat classes, and Susanne even explored further into Sonexis, starting a class there and enrolling anyone who would provide an email address. Paolo from Italy appeared after many months away and in he voice chat, explained the secrets of pizza, which Ying Lan was very interested in. Lian and Moral chatted mostly in the Yahoo Voice area, where they suggested we have a topic for each class, and Lian convinced Moral to try inviting foreigners to his house in order to make friends while practicing English. DavidW had just been to Manhattan, which he said was returning to normal, and he suggested a web site with pictures of someone who lives in the area. Gwyneth appeared and said some nice things about Webheads, and BJB helped out whenever asked. Last but not least, Michael emailed that he'd been at a music festival.

Rif finds Vance on ICQ, Saturday

I guess you could say this week's chat started with Rif getting in touch on Saturday. I think he might have thought it was Webheads class time ...

rif: Hi Vance, how is it going?

Vance: Hi Rif. How are you today?

rif: fine. Hanging around ! trying to finish up the course page for CALL course that I will teach.. Where are you ? in Tapped In?

Vance: I could go there. I'm just checking email, getting things done here at work.

rif: that's fine. You have Fridays off I guess at work, right?

Vance: I have thu and fri off. I just went to tapped in. I don't mind going there, see who's around.

rif: it kills me to open the internet connections here. we have a dial up connection at home with 56 K, but what I get is not more than 28 800 K

Vance: Well this is ok too. It's early at Tapped In. BJB is there, probablyin the enchanted forest.

Vance: Weheads will all be there tomorrow.

rif: I will be there tomorrow too..

Vance: Have you got a url for the course you're teaching?
That's great. We've had quite a crowd lately. Have you been reading the logs?

rif: Did you respond to Claire's email about web cam conference at the CALL list-serv?

rif: I am almost done with it. It should be all ready by tomorrow.

Vance: Yeah, had to since she sent it to the WHOLE LIST
Vance: I kidded her about that, let me tell you

rif: hehee...

Vance: I have two web cams, neither of which work on the machines they're attached to

Vance: I've got a Sony VAIO that should be pretty cool for web work

Vance: I should do something about hooking a camera up to it. Maybe the one here in my office ...

Vance: I'm so LAZY that's the problem

rif: same here! I have one, too. I installed win2000 and it wouldn't recognize the driver. I did not bother yo go and find it yet!

Vance: Do you have a web cam? Yeah, they're so touchy. The one on my office computer I can broadcast out but I can't see who I'm talking to. Our network specialist says he had to route data in a different way but he never does

rif: Yes, I have one. do you have a proxy?

Vance: My son at home has reconfigured our computer there so many times the web cam stopped working ages ago. Yeah, we have a proxy. On our LAN there's one, and on our dialup there's one for the entire UAE

rif: sounds a little bit complicated then! I will try to get my students use Forum in CALL class. We connot get beyond that yet with the infrastructure issues around. It would be great to get them communicate with audio-video.

Vance: Did you see our logs from last week? There's a picture of Felix there on his web cam

rif: yes I did see te pix.

Vance: Seemed pretty easy. if you have one that works you can broadcast on Yahoo

rif: I have a server, too. I can broadcast with Real Audio server. but, as you said, I am LAzy, too :-)))

Vance: You have Real Audio Server? Hey, cool

rif: yeap. On an NT server. The problem here is that I cannot reach everthing, and the people here have a very different agenda than mine :-)) I will be teaching at least 28 hours a week :-(

Vance: whew, what a load? But at least you have such nice students!!

rif: yes, they are great! they are very eager to learn and communicate with people around the world. I will be giving them an article this semester, where they cite you. Let's see if they remember .. this will be cool.

Vance: of course they will remember. Online events are highly memorable.

rif: I think so. I think we should try this this semester, too. What do you think?

Vance: Of course. Webheads enjoy it. The more the merrier. I think I'll try getting my cam working tomorrow. Just talking with you I'm starting to think if I have the software for it, and I think I do ...

rif: Let me see if I can hook it up again. We can try it tomorrow.

Vance: Last week we tried groove.net but it was dead in the water, with us driving at any rate

Vance: But you might be interested in that. Michael and I had it going pretty well a week ago.

rif: Istill could not manage to download it. I tryied two times and connection lost. let me try it one more time now..
