Meet the people in the chat today

The chat was the usual spontaneous Webheads adventure in global communication through various chat clients and modalities. As I wrapped up my work at my office at noon GMT (4 p.m. in Abu Dhabi) I saw Felix appear on ICQ so I said hello before joining the others at Tapped In. I told him we were planning to experiment with Groove from http://www.groove.net Michael and I had connected using Groove a few days earlier. It lets you do in one single space what we do now using a mix of programs such as TappedIn, Groupboard, and Yahoo voice chat. In Groove, you can communicate with others using microphone and text, you can show pictures or urls instantly on each others 'Groovy' browsers, and you can share a drawing tool without having to multi-task in many different windows. At least that's how it would work if everyone was on Groove and in the same shared space. John and BJB had both downloaded Groove but none of us could figure out how to connect with each other, so we waited for Michael to appear and invite us to the Webheads shared space. But when Michael arrived, we had confusion over Groove user names (two Vances, and BJB in Groove was not our BJB) and then it took so long to download the Webheads shared space.that Michael had to leave before it was done. Maybe we'll try again later

Meanwhile Ying Lan appeared. She had two serious problems. First, the typhoon that had just pelted Taiwan for 2 days had flooded the Taipei metro and seriously disrupted train services on the island. Her second serious problem was that she had to clean her room (many people say, "So many books, so little time," but for Ying Lan, it's " ... so little space."). She had to get rid of some books so she could make a place to sleep.

Lian appeared and asked to start a voice chat. Felix had rejoined us by then, and he decided to try and project his web cam over Yahoo. It worked, as you can see in the graphic below. So in typical Webheads fashion, some of us were at various times, and with varying success, chatting in text at Tapped In, talking in Yahoo voice chat, distractedly trying to get Groove running, and at one point watching Felix talk to us from his place in Brazil. The latter was indeed an interesting success (I'm thinking of getting a web cam now for my laptop!).

JohnSte says, "When I had to reboot I lost all my connections."

JohnSte says, "I should be getting some work done, too."

VanceS says, "Lian is still at Yahoo voice"

JohnSte says, "I also have to get a load off my . . ."

VanceS asks, "mind?"

JohnSte says, "You might say that."

JohnSte says, "It's a bit lower, though."

MargaretD says, "hmmmmmmmmmmm"

VanceS says, "gotcha John. This will be in our logs, you know."

MargaretD says, "they say we have a brain in our digestive tract too"

VanceS says, "She teachers and also studies"

VanceS says, "She's applying to schools in the USA"

VanceS says, "She's been in several Tapped In sessions"

VanceS says, "oh, it's us, btw. We had 8 in Yahoo chat last week. about 5 tonight."

MargaretD says, "ok"

VanceS says, "The students really enjoy the voice chat. And they wish you were there. They say that."

MargaretD asks, "yes, well how many are in Webheads last count?"

VanceS asks, "I just put up the logs from last week so I can tell you that. Do you want me to project or shall I just do a count?"

MargaretD says, "count"

VanceS says, "found it: Much of the chat cannot be recorded here because it took place in the Yahoo voice chat area. The connection was good for a change, voices were clear, and we had as many as 8 people in the voice chat: Sue and Peter in Japan, Ying Lan in Taiwan, Vance in the UAE, Michael in Australia, and Moral and Lian both in China. We were also joined there by Hoang from Vietnam, whom Ying Lan had met online and invited."

MargaretD asks, "how many in Webheads alltogether?"

MargaretD says, "so those that weren't there couldn't even read about what was said..."

VanceS says, "In the yahoogroups list there are about 50, but if you look at the students page you can see who is active"

LianA says, "yes."

VanceS says, "Yes, that's true. We can't record a voice chat."

MargaretD says, "5-8 of 50 then"

VanceS says, "You've been with us for 3 years. You know it's always an active core and many lurkers."

MargaretD says, "many are left out of even lurking"

VanceS says, "They lurk on our yahoogroup mainly."

MargaretD says, "I know that I've said it many times, but not everyone has the technology"

VanceS says, "Now if you take the small subset who come to the chat ..."

VanceS asks, "Yes, well, why not start another evening class for people who want only to text chat?"

MargaretD says, "ichael and I may do that"

VanceS says, "That would be fine. It would expand options for the students and would be fine with me."

MargaretD says, "good"

MargaretD says, "it has been suggested before"

VanceS says, "I'm not preventing anything. If you want to take the initiative that would be welcome."

MargaretD says, "I wouldn't want you to be offended"

VanceS says, "I would not be offended. I just suggested it myself. If you are willing to put in the effort I will support it (like on the website if you want it to be part of webheads)"

MargaretD says, "I asked you once not to be offended and you were..."

MargaretD says, "it should be part of webheads"

VanceS says, "That's great. It's a positive development. If you want to do it, that's fine."

Vance: How do we get there?

michaelc: I guess I have to invite you - so i will...oh wait see your message in Tapped in

michaelc: Do you have Groove open? Says waiting for delivery...but do you actually have to wait for an invite I wonder.....can't you just go there like you doid the other day......?

Vance: The other day I had a message above my task bar. I'm on a different computer
