When I click here and open this file (2.3 meg), here are my options:

Using IE 5, open file at its current location: after a minute or two it should start playing in your media player
Using IE 5, save file to disk: save it and listen to it later in Windows Media Player
Using Netscape 4.7, on my computer, it opened the code in the browser. When it's finished downloading, try saving the file as stevens.wma and launching it in Windows Media Player

The chat log we were able to capture here is interesting in the way the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is interesting. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are the two gentlemen sent to accompany Hamlet on his sea voyage to make sure that he would be arrested when he reached his destination (but in the end, they were themselves killed). Many of us are quite familiar with Shakespeare's play Hamlet from the point of view of the audience. Tom Stoppard depicted the action behind the scenes, backstage, where two gentlemen who have minor roles in Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, become the stars of Stoppard's play, discussing what could possibly be happening on the front side of the drapes.

Similarly, the transcript for today reveals the backstage dialog taking place in Tapped In which allows us to infer what was happening as I was speaking via streaming audio at the ELT Online Conference, and while John and Michael were copresenting along with many Webheads helping take questions in the simultaneous text chat. Meanwhile some people were coming to Tapped In from the ELT Online Conference to see what it was that the presentation was about.

There are probably bits and pieces of this chat session elsewhere that might still come together. I was talking to Lian and Yaodong in MSN and Yahoo Messengers while I was setting up my computer for the streaming presentation, but I closed the web cam to prevent a crash, and killed all my Yahoo windows, causing me to lose that part of our logs for this evening.

Hi everyone,

I've been in touch with Eric Baber, who is organizing the English Language Teaching Online Conference, ELToc, http://www.eltoc.com. He has agreed, rather than ask Webheads to each say who would like to participate, to just issue an id and password good for all Webheads during the time we are allowed to join the conference.

The id name will be 'webheads' and the password will be 'webheads'

This password will only be 'turned on' at noon GMT Sun Nov 11, and it will be disabled shortly after our session ends. This will allow those wishing to attend our regular class to log on to the online conference to hear Dave Sperling speak about http://www.eslcafe.com at noon GMT and to attend our presentation immediately afterwards, at 13:00.

If you want to listen to conference presentations, you must have the Windows Media Player installed. Each presentation is streamed, so you will hear someone talking. You will hear Dave Sperling at noon GMT, and me at 13:00 GMT.

Webheads are welcome to join the conference chat area and chat with the participants who are also listening to the streamed talks. I think the participants will be very interested in meeting with any Webheads who would like to come to the conference chat.

It will be impossible to run other voice applications on one computer while listening to the Windows Media Player, so we can't use Yahoo chat in voice mode while listening in Windows Media Player. I don't think I will run my web cam either since it has made my computer crash in the past (and I'm presenting, so we can't let that happen!), but if others want to run their web cams, we can let conference participants view them.

We can be in other text chat areas, such as Tapped In, while participating in the conference. As you know, what typically happens in Webheads classes, people 'drop by' these chat areas for their 'intuitive chaos navigation' assignments. With the webheads/webheads id and password, we can direct anyone who comes there and wants to join us to the ELToc conference during the time we are permitted to be there.

Thanks Eric for being such a great guy and helping us to make an interesting presentation into an interesting Webheads class as well.

p.s. Michael Coghlan and John Steele are co-presenting with me and should be granted access to the entire conference. Michael is doing his own presentation at another time during the conference, and I am part of a panel discussion in another part of the conference as well. If you want to attend the entire conference, which should be a very interesting one, you have to pay a registration fee, but if you are interested in this subject, it should be a very interesting online event.

At Yahoo Messenger, voice chat will not work if you are also listening to me talk in Windows Media Player. However, our web cams should work. If you have a web cam, please turn it on for the participants (and for each other).
