These interactions took place before, during, and after a Webheads presentation at the MLI's Teacher to Teacher Conference in Abu Dhabi on November 7, 2001. The logs record preparations for the chat including last minute attempts to get Yahoo Messenger working and on-the-fly fallback on Netmeeting and MSN Messenger. The text chat during the presentation alludes to talks broadcast live to the conference audience from Rif in Turkey and An Lian in China. The logs record the reactions of others who could in some cases neither see nor hear what was going on. Participants agreed however that the presentation went well and was worthwhile despite technical glitches, which should not cloud the thrust of what we are doing, bringing global communities together for peaceful and scholarly purposes online.

See you on Wednesday for the more serious or at least publicly exposed conference stuff. Are you going to give a presentation on the voice or webcam site, too? I was happy that you shared the correspondance from last week with rif as I got a better understanding of the situation where I did feel a bit confused - I still never know what to expect, just that I usually enjoy surprises, too. Are conference participants all on site, face to face in the same location as you? Wull they themselves have hands on access to computer terminals, or are they just reading along on a big wallscreen? Do you think the Tapped In channel will be used much, or do you just want me to be ready in case someone shows up?

remember to mail us a password in time before the session, and please give me any needed instructions if you wish me to fit into a certain kind of role - I can put on several caps, like the friendly and social helpdesker, the eager but clumsy SFL student, or the cyber-anthropologist edtech&community researcher ;-)

Rif has a web cam. I will also have one at the conference site. Therefore, I can show the conference hall and the participants there. Maybe we can get people at the conference to interact. Sometimes we find people in an audience who don't mind interacting. At other times, they just want to be told what's going on. In that case, Rif and Yaodong will interact with their students and we'll just be listening in and I'll be explaining what people are seeing.

Yeah, me too. Chaos navigation is hard, but FUN (at least it's intuitive)

Same location. I'll try to show them to you on my web cam. I will be giving a 'talk'.

At this conference, I'll have the only computer, and I'll be sort of 'presenting' what we do, hoping that Rif and Yaodong keep the action up so there will be lots to show. I'm going to get there at 11 GMT though, to set up and interact. It's only at noon GMT that I will have to talk to the audience. At 13:00 GMT there is another presentation, so I'll have to depart the chat before then.

From noon GMT on I won't be able to keep logs, so if someone can cut and paste from Yahoo windows and send them to me, I'll add those to the logs pages. For the Wed Sunday session just come to Tapped In and meet Rif and Yaodong in the Yahoo voice and web cam chats.

You don't need a microphone or a web cam! You can just listen and watch. If you don't have sound, you can type.

all of those are appropriate. But how many can you do at the same time? That is the test of an intuitive chaos browsing Webhead.

Hi Webheads

Today was a terrific and amazing group performance, despite all the troubleshooting I felt must have been a real challenge to the responsible parties, I think the session was an interesting and intense experience, seen from my personal Danish desktop in Tapped In only. It was the first time I tried to part of this kind of opening our doors to a face to face group presentation.

Do you know the old game where one or more persons have their eyes covered with a scarf and has to devine who's who after being turned around to lose a sense of orientation? This word came to mi mind while I was trying to discover shaw might be going on around me, as i coud read the Tapped In text only but had reports of rif's and Yaodong's students: Lian an John were great helpers trying hard to herd all those wild cats running around - the mamagement of yahoo messenger not working, the Netmeeting and all the efforts made to realize the dream of global connectivity.

The ability of communicating across distances has to be developed through experimentation, curiosity and training the dialogical tools as well as developing an intersocial feeling of knowing who you are, where you are and what to talk about. I do look forward for whatever will come next this Sunday and after.

Hi everyone,

This is just to extend a warm thanks to all of you who turned out for the presentation today. I just got back from the conference and just now got the email transcripts from tapped in, so I haven't read them yet, but I think despite the technical glitches, we made a great presentation.

Our biggest problem was we couldn't run Yahoo on my conference laptop, and I couldn't use my laptop because it wasn't configured for the ISDN line there. We tried using MSN Messenger Service but discovered that MSNMS won't allow groups to chat. There is a menu choice to invite others to your conference, but when you try to do it, it says you can't. It's probably a question of paying extra, I guess. So Yahoo Messenger appears to be the right tool for us to use, and I'll be glad to get back to it when I'm back on my own computer.

Rif couldn't get his MSNMS to work, so he spoke to our audience using Netmeeting. He addressed the issue of the technology not always working correctly but he made the point that it was certainly worth trying and that the gains to our students and to our profession were worth the temporary frustrations. Rif put his students on and they introduced themselves to our conference participants as well. We also saw some of his students on Rif's webcam via netmeeting.

At about 4:20 our time we visited Yaodong's class using MSNMS. Yaodong's students were able to hear us but we weren't able to hear them. We were able to read what they were writing in MSNMS and in Tapped In, so we were communicating. However as An Lian and I had tested MSNMS earlier that day and I knew it was working with her, I said bye to Yaodong's students and went over to An Lian. I then put the guy sitting next to me on with her, and she had a short talk with Jim from Canada while I showed the participants our web page from October 31, and Rif's, Yaodong's, and An Lian's web pages. They saw fuzzy Susanne's picture too and John's page, and they have the url for our talk and can find out more about us.

Paul, who was assisting me, then came on and talked with everyone in Tapped In while I wrapped up with those present. At the end we had about 9 or 10 people all on stage with us in a huge theater that seats 800. We were one of 7 or 8 presentations running at the same time and another presenter told me he'd only had two at his. When we make presentations they have been at times to audiences of more than 100, so you never know who will attend. I think we made an excellent presentation and that those who attended will tell others how good it was. Plus we have a web page, so others can explore our site even if they didn't come in person.

So as Rif said, despite frustrations, well worth doing.

Our next Sunday class will be yet another presentation, but an online one. I'll write more about it later. I'm sleepy now. I just wanted to say thanks to all who put in so much effort, and to express to all the Turkish and Chinese students my hope that we can arrange an event soon that focuses more on them in particular.
