Meet the people in the chat today
Vance | Maggi | Michael | Ying Lan | Sue | Moral | Juani | Peter | Gloria | Felix | Susanne |
UAE | Germany | Australia | Taiwan | Japan | China | Chile | Japan | Paraguay | Brazil | Denmark |
and BJB (lives in Enchanted Forest at TappedIn), Lian (who Vance found on Yahoo), Hoang (from Vietnam) - and Dario, Redy, two Bills, and Walter (who all happened on us at Tapped In)
Find where everyone first joined the chat: Vance | Sue | BJB | Ying Lan | DarioJ | Moral | Maggi | Redy | Michael | Bill | Peter | BillDe | Juani | Walter | Hoang | Lian | Gloria | Felix | Susanne
Understandably, the chat tonight was a lot about the disastrous terrorist destruction of lives and property just 5 days earlier. Sue was concerned about her plans to study in Texas, and Ying Lan told us of the survival of her colleagues whose offices in New York were near the World Trade Towers. Much of the chat cannot be recorded here because it took place in the Yahoo voice chat area. The connection was good for a change, voices were clear, and we had as many as 8 people in the voice chat: Sue and Peter in Japan, Ying Lan in Taiwan, Vance in the UAE, Michael in Australia, and Moral and Lian both in China. We were also joined there by Hoang from Vietnam, whom Ying Lan had met online and invited.

VanceS teleports to the reception.
Stopped recording in VanceS's Office (#12249) at Sun Sep 16 04:11:05 2001 PDT.
Started recording in Reception (#268)[TappedIn] at Sun Sep 16 04:11:05 2001 PDT.
VanceS asks, "Hi. WHere is my picture I wonder. Can you see it?"
Sue [guest] says, "oh, you are here"
VanceS asks, "Have I got a picture above my name?"
Sue [guest] says, "yes, in my side i can see it"
VanceS says, "oh, ok, I don't see it, but nevermind"
Sue [guest] says, "try update, maybe it would appear again"
VanceS says, "I did. But it's not important"
BJ's Shadow follows BJB to here.
BJB [HelpDesk] waves good day
VanceS says, "Hi BJB"
Sue [guest] says, "hi, BJB"
VanceS asks, "Do you remember Sue?"
BJB [to Sue [guest]]: "where are you located?"
Sue [guest] says, "I am in Japan now"
BJB asks, "would I remember you as Sue in Japan?"
VanceS says, "Sue is hoping to go to Texas A&M University to study English."
BJB . o O ( I just got up and am not thinking very clearly yet! )
VanceS says, "She has just told me she is being mailed an acceptance letter"
VanceS . o O ( That explains the rollers )
BJB exclaims, "great, Sue!"
Sue [guest] says, "thanks BJB"
BJB [to VanceS]: "it also explains the large cup of coffee"
VanceS says, "But Sue is a little concerned about the impact of recent events on her travel and study plans"
BJB says, "it might be a problem for a while, unfortunately. It's going to take some time to unravel this mess."
Sue [guest] says, "yes, i think so too."
Sue [guest] says, "at least airline is not recovered yet."
BJB [HelpDesk] nods.
VanceS says, "I guess flights are starting up again. There must be a lot of people waiting to travel."
BJB asks, "I wouldn't want to be one of them for a few weeks yet. When were you hoping to come to the US, Sue?"
Sue [guest] says, "From news, in japan side, flights are starting again, but security is increased . take a long time for checking hand luggage."
Sue [guest] says, "me? Mostly are January next year."
BJB says, "It's not only the increased security, think about all the people who are stranded in some strange airport from when they grounded all flights."
VanceS says, "I guess it's even hard to get a bus now"
BJB says, "we'll cross our fingers for you, Sue, that things are more stable by January."
VanceS says, "But with George Make No Mistake Bush on the warpath, this is a very dangerous situation coming up."
Sue [guest] says, "i am worried there would be a war soon"
BJB says, "I think the situation is very dangerous no matter who would be president, Vance..."
BJB says, "this was a horrible, horrible act with thousands of innocent people killed"
Sue [guest] says, "but soon there would be more innocent people die for the coming revenge."
VanceS says, "Well, things started spinning out of control with the strong Israeli retaliations on Palestinians, and Bush and his team have been distancing himself from that."
BJB says, "I pray that our leaders will proceed with great care, as they appear to be doing, and the revenge will be directed at the group responsible for this terrible disaster"
VanceS says, "I hope so too, but I don't see Bush doing that. I think there's too much reliance on the military. The military has only one purpose, and politicians can be powerless to stop it, let alone individuals like us."
BJB says, "I can only speak as an individual. I wonder if your news reports are the same as our news reports."
VanceS asks, "For one thing, where is this enemy that he's raising an army against?"
VanceS says, "I watch CNN and BBC and I have access to all the websites, ABC, NBC etc"
BJB says, "if the location of the enemy was known, retaliation would have already taken place, Vance."
VanceS says, "On the other hand, one wonders if our local newspapers are reporting the same thing. Well, I can tell you in Houston you have to dig about halfway through the paper to find any international news."
BJB says, "Most of the local news now is related to how we can help NYC and Washington with recovery efforts, send sympathy messages to the survivors, and show our solidarity as a country"
VanceS says, "I can understand that. I'm thinking about the papers before this happened."
BJB says, "I have not witnessed it personally, but there are increasing reports of violence against Arab Americans and Muslims which has me very concerned."
VanceS says, "It's hard for Americans to understand the nature of this enemy."
BJB [HelpDesk] nods. Terrorism is difficult to understand
VanceS says, "That's terrible, for innocents anywhere to be targeted. It could happen to me and my family here in Abu Dhabi."
VanceS says, "For the most part, the people here are kind and apologetic about what happened."
VanceS says, "Sue, I hope you don't mind us talking about this."
BJB [HelpDesk] nods..have you read the posts to Andy Carvin's list?
Sue [guest] says, "no, i am keep reading your discussion"
VanceS says, "No, but I have the url."
VanceS asks, "I never looked. What are they saying, gyst-wise?"
BJB says, "there are hundreds (probably thousands by now) of posts...all from different points of view..."
BJB says, "I only read the ones that agree with my point of view :-)"
VanceS says, "I can relate to that"
VanceS asks, "so what is the point of view that you seek out?"
BJB says, "here's an example:"
----------------------------------- BJB -----------------------------------
"I particularly like the poster that says, "If McVeigh bombed the WTC, would we bomb Michigan?""
Ahhh but theres the conundrum.....the State of Michigan didnt hold McVeigh in protection....the people of Michigan didnt say, "He is our guest, and thus keep your hands off." (paraphrased from an article I saw yesterday, spoken by a meat vendor who supports bin Laden...CNN?)... So it doesnt appear that on close examination that the comparison holds truth does it?
I'm not say bomb or not bomb....just pointing out the idiocy in the rhetoric of BOTH sides....
---------------------------- BJB stops pasting ----------------------------
VanceS says, "Yes, but it's the government of the Taliban that's holdin Bin Ladin and it's the people of the USA and Afghanistan who are going to suffer if the USA strikes"
BJB [HelpDesk] agrees.
BJB says, "here's another post"
----------------------------------- BJB -----------------------------------
Please consider adding your name to this online list of people who do not want to see the response to September 11, 2001's terrorist attacks increase the level of conflict in the world. Please go to http://www.flora.org/coat/appeal add your name and pass it on!
---------------------------- BJB stops pasting ----------------------------
VanceS asks, "Webheads have been working on a page. I showed it to Sue yesterday. Did you have a look Sue?"
BJB [to VanceS]: "there is a message in the TAPPED IN newsletter about some of the things that TI members are doing. You might want to post your webheads page to the meetme mail list."
VanceS says, "This url you have just sent is exactly my point of view"
VanceS says, "and that articulated on our web page"
VanceS says, "Yes, find a way to achieve justice without resorting to more violence"
VanceS says, "Justice yes, retaliation no. Stop the cycle of violence now. It's my mantra."
BJB says, "My hope is that Justice is what is being sought."
VanceS says, "It's interesting this reponse to this terrible attack on our country."
VanceS says, "If we were Israelis we would strike first and think later."
VanceS says, "The problem is that Israel has been doing this using American weapons and financial support"
VanceS says, "Something like 10 percent of our entire foreign aid budget goes to Israel."
VanceS says, "They have been increasing the level of violence in the middle east in a way acting as our proxies"
VanceS says, "This is the reason for this attack on us."
VanceS says, "And our response must not be like theirs, because we are different from them."
BJB [HelpDesk] also agrees about the response.
VanceS says, "I don't think that it has been wrong for the USA to help Israel, but I think that the way they have used that help has been wrong in the extreme."
BJB says, "good day, Ying"
ying [guest] says, "Vance"
VanceS says, "Hi there."
ying [guest] says, "Hi... it is good to see you."
ying [guest] says, "Can I ask a grammer question.. I do understand the sentance."
ying [guest] says, "I do not..."
VanceS says, "Yes, nice to see all of you. ... sure"
VanceS asks, "Is that the sentence: I do not. ??"
ying [guest] says, "Information that is leading to the inflamed passions of fellow Americans and a glorification of an Israeli system that violates human rights to allegedly maintain its secrity.""
ying [guest] says, "I can not find the subject and object... in the sentence.. or just combined the two sentence by "and"."
VanceS says, "We were just discussing this .. and yes, you are correct, it is not a complete sentence."
ying [guest] says, "that last wrod is "its security.""
ying [guest] says, "Really... what is the writer's point? I don't get it."
VanceS says, "We have to imagine a subject and a verb: how about ..."
ying [guest] asks, "how about what?"
VanceS says, "The American media is diseminating information that is etc."
VanceS says, "Or some media, in other words, the media, or someone, is giving out information that raises the passions of Americans"
VanceS says, "it's 'fellow-americans' so the information giver is an american"
VanceS says, "at the same time, the entity giving out the information is glorifying an Israeli government or system"
VanceS says, "that is oppressing Palestinian rights, civil rights"
VanceS says, "and saying it is doing this because it 'allegedly' must maintain its security"
VanceS says, "allegedly means there is some doubt that this is true"
ying [guest] says, "But you don't have the evidence to porve his guility."
ying [guest] says, "prove"
VanceS asks, "prove whose guilt?"
ying [guest] says, "someone's"
Dario's Recorder follows DarioJ to here.
BJB says, "good morning, Dario"
VanceS says, "Hello Dario"
ying [guest] asks, "good morning.. are you in America?"
DarioJ says, "Good morning to all"
ying [guest] says, "Dario."
ying [guest] asks, "DarioJ are you from the States?"
VanceS says, "Hi Dario. Ying Lan is in Taiwan and Sue is in Japan and I guess they want to know where you are"
DarioJ says, "Hi BJ..I am here for the webheads meeting you mention last time"
VanceS says, "And I'm in Abu Dhabi, btw"
VanceS looks Webhead.
BJB [to DarioJ]: "you're in it now, Dario. Vance is the leader of the discussion."
DarioJ says, "I am in Venezuela"
VanceS [Webhead] nods to Dario
VanceS says, "Hi Dario. Welcome."
DarioJ says, "thanks to all for the welcome"
ying [guest] asks, "Your first languages is Spanish?"
VanceS says, "Nice of you to tell others about us BJB"
DarioJ says, "yes it is spanish"
ying [guest] says, "Waaa.. cool."
ying [guest] asks, "Are you an energetic person?"
VanceS says, "Moral, nice to see you. Moral is from China."
VanceS says, "From Kunming."
ying [guest] says, "hello Moral."

VanceS says, "Thanks Moral. Dario, we have met every Sunday for about 3 years now."
VanceS says, "We just talk about what's on our minds."
VanceS says, "The purpose of our discussion is language learning, but we have more human agenda as well."
VanceS says, "humanistic"
DarioJ says, "I see....fine...we usually have a lot of things in our minds"
ying [guest] says, "Language is a tool to help people to communicate."
ying [guest] says, "each other."
MargaretD arrives from nowhere.
MargaretD's personal recorder follows MargaretD to here.
BJB says, "good day, Maggi"
DarioJ says, "thanks to the language we become better humans"
MoralL exclaims, "Hi Maggi!"
MargaretD says, "Hi Moral"
VanceS says, "Hi Maggi"
MargaretD says, "Hi BJBV"
MargaretD says, "HI to Sue and Ying too..."
Sue [guest] says, "hi, so many people now"
MoralL says, "Hi to sue." <Moral invites Vance to a voice chat -- click here to follow us there -->
VanceS asks, "Sorry, we're trying to start a voice chat. Is that Moral in our conference?"
ying [guest] says, "Yes... but sometimes you speak spontaneously.. language will hurt people."
VanceS asks, "lanaoyi = moral?"
MoralL says, "Lan Dao Yi= Moral"
VanceS asks, "ok, can you hear us?"
MoralL says, "No."
MargaretD says, "words can hurt...."
MoralL asks, "How to start voice chat?"
DarioJ exclaims, "yes..how to do it ...I didn t know that we had in TI that option!"
MargaretD says, "they are somewhere else"
MoralL says, "I meant how to start voice chat at Yahoo Messenger."
VanceS asks, "Not in TI, we're in Yahoo. Do you have Yahoo Messenger?"
ying [guest] says, "We were talking about the wrong information have been spreaded by media."
VanceS asks, "What version of Yahoo Messenger do you have Moral?"
MoralL says, "newest. I can use voice chat last time."
MargaretD says, "each country's media sees it from there perspective to0o"
MargaretD says, "their"
VanceS says, "ok, there should be a voice button in the lower left corner of Yahoo Messenger"
VanceS says, "Are you on Yahoo Dario? If so we can invite you to join us."
VanceS says, "from its perspective Maggi"
MoralL says, "Vance, there was one. But it disappeared this time."
VanceS says, "LOL"
DarioJ says, "No. I have used before MSM but I havent downloaded yahoo messenger"
MargaretD says, "the country is an it yes and the media...but it is from people's perspective"
VanceS says, "it's ok, we discuss here. If you were in Yahoo Messenger you would hear Ying Lan and Sue talk about their trips to the USA"
VanceS says, "Ying Lan's colleagues are in NYC right now and she is still planning to go and replace them."
DarioJ says, "fine."
VanceS says, "YL's colleagues work near the WTC in NYC. Their bldg was damaged."
DarioJ says, "I am planning to go to Kentucky in a few weeks to visit my son who lives there"
VanceS says, "She hasn't heard about their exact situation but it seems their biggest problem right now is to locate."

Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Between all wehheads!"
VanceS says, "All us Webheads are going to meet in Michael's backyard"
VanceS says, "Wearing our webhead t-shirts"
ying [guest] says, "I think that one day maybe we can meet in the real world."
VanceS says, "And bringing pot luck"
BJB says, "Hi, Bill. Welcome to TAPPED IN"
BJB [to Bill [guest]]: "may I help you with something?"
VanceS says, "Hi BIll. Welcome."

Bill [guest] asks, "I haven't received her inforsearcher page since I left New Haven... is the article online as well?"
BJB says, "I'm going to project a url to you...read the following and let me know when you're ready"
BJB [HelpDesk] projects Projections.

lolita: Hello Vance . How are
you?
I'm really sorry about what´s happening in the US
Vance: Hi Gloria. Nice to hear from you. How are you?
lolita: I'm fine, what about you?
Vance: Well, so far, safe and sound. Not happy about the prospect of Americans going to war.
lolita: yeah it's crazy nobody will be safe enough anymore if it happens
Vance: Not sure if anyone is safe now. Four plane loads of people. From all nations.
lolita: that's true, there were paraguayans working at the towers...
Vance: So what do people in Paraguay think? What do they think should be done?
lolita: It seems like ancient problems are the same problems we still got nowadays
Vance: Ancient meaning religion? Really, I could do without religion. Human beings matter more than their idea of God.
lolita: I think and so others people that US must stop its plan of
attacking
an entire nation full of innocent people too. This will have
a domino effect. That's not the answer I think
lolita: ancient=old
not
religion
Vance: I agree with you completely. My call is for no retaliation, end the cycle of violence. Justice by some other means. They're only going to kill more americans and afghans as well.
lolita: I'm sorry I put a french word...
Vance: old problems, ah .. anciennes, oui, pas de problem
Vance: yeah, I argued with my wife that this problem was started when Ariel Sharon set foot in the mosque on Dome of the Rock, but she pointed out that the Africa bombings happened long before that. It's been a war for some time.
lolita: pas de problem
I concern about americans living in
the Middle East
Vance: Well, we're concerned a little bit too, but to tell you frankly,
I don't feel that the Emiratis would harm us. We are perhaps in danger from
people living here, not Emiratis, but it's the same in the USA too. If you can
read NYT, you might want to look at this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/14/national/14ISLA.html
Vance: This is about attacks on Arabs living in the USA
lolita: Palestinians have the right of having a piece of land...and I agree that jews are not doing what they have to for stopping war and death
Vance: To tell you frankly, living overseas, esp in this part of the world, changes your perception on world events. I think I see more both sides. It's terrible what the terrorists have done, but it's also terrible what the Israelis have done with American support.
lolita: I know that...
I Know that because I was watching CNN
Vance: CNN reports the news fairly I think, but Americans get a different version. I don't think Americans are well informed of what goes on in the Middle East.
lolita: an american girl told me that democracy and human rights are granted inside the US but she also said US had a dirty politic outside the US..That was an american point of view...
lolita: I was once in the US and I noticed that most people don't know
what is like the rest of the world...
Yesterday one man said USA is not the
world!
Vance: In my opinion, American politics is not democratic inside the USA. In order to elect an official, the candidate needs money to support an ad campaign. THerefore s/he can't offend any established groups. Therefore we have no opposition to the status quo. Then look at Bush's hijacking of the American election.
Vance: You are right about American ignorance of the rest of the world. When I was growing up we learned more in school I think than they do now. Plus, newspapers do not report world news on the front page so much, and little analysis. THis doesn't mean the new isn't there, it just means americans have to seek it out, and many don't.
lolita: well I have to go now. All I wanted to say is that we need to
stand for a better world everybody doing what they can to stop the suffering of
innocents and that there's just one race "the human being race"
I don't
know if I wrote race OK?
race I mean black, white, indians..etc..
Vance: The human race. Thanks for your thought Gloria. I have a web page for them. I"ll add them there and send the url in a bit. Take care. Thanks for getting in touch.
lolita: bye, take care
Vance: ok, thanks again for your thoughts.

Grisham 9/16/01 9:22 PM hi there
Vance 9/16/01 9:22 PM Hey Felix. How are you?
Grisham 9/16/01 9:22 PM fine and you... shocked about the events
Vance 9/16/01 9:23 PM Yeah really. Things will never be the same.
Grisham 9/16/01 9:23 PM all over the globe
Vance 9/16/01 9:24 PM Not sure what's going to happen now. May come to join you in Brazil!
Grisham 9/16/01 9:24 PM be my guest
Grisham 9/16/01 9:25 PM things will not be good for you in UAE right??
Vance 9/16/01 9:27 PM Well, actually, the UAE is very safe. Nice people
here. I'm reading this url just now. You may have to register with NYT to read
it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/14/national/14I
LA.html
Vance 9/16/01 9:35 PM This is about attacks on Arabs living in the USA
Grisham 9/16/01 9:35 PM that´s unacceptable
Vance 9/16/01 9:36 PM Absolutely
Grisham 9/16/01 9:36 PM we will destroy ourselves
Vance 9/16/01 9:37 PM To tell you frankly, living overseas, esp in this part of the world, changes your perception on world events. I think I see more both sides. It's terrible what the terrorists have done, but it's also terrible what the Israelis have done with American support.
Grisham 9/16/01 9:38 PM of course that Americans are not angels....
and the media hasn´t showed what the americans have contributed to the
destruction of lives...
but terrorism is unacceptable wherever it
happens
Vance 9/16/01 9:42 PM True, I was surprised to read that 130,000 Japanese were killed in the bombing of HIroshima. In NYC we are talking about 5,000. Still that is a lot of people for an attack on a peaceful nation. Americans contribute to Israeli domination in the Middle East, but I can't believe they accept Israeli methods. They are guilty of being ignorant of them perhaps.
Grisham 9/16/01 9:42 PM what I feel sorry is the lives lost.. ppl who don´t have anything to do with this
Vance 9/16/01 9:46 PM Really, that's why Americans are going to war I guess. It's why the world will support them. But it just means more innocents will be killed. Pretty depressing.
Grisham 9/16/01 9:48 PM pretty depressing we are together with these thoughts... KILLING
Vance 9/16/01 9:50 PM no more killing; That's my message. Stop the violence. Find another way. Use intelligence. It is clear though that Amerians are already lining up to fight this war.
Grisham 9/16/01 9:50 PM power... money.... obsession......
that´s why it´s hard to stop it
Vance 9/16/01 9:52 PM I think the reason the terrorists do what they do is that they are frustrated, with no other means of fighting the oppression, and now the Americans are in the same position, so they will use the means at their disposal.
Vance 9/16/01 9:58 PM Felix, thanks very much for checking in. I appreciate your thoughts. I'm going to turn toward bed now.
Vance 9/16/01 9:59 PM good night ...

Hi all Webheads,
Today I will not be able to join the Webheads because we have a tradition to spend Sunday afternoons doing something togehter. I will speak a few words to you by email instead.
This week had been one of the saddest I can ever remember because of the unthinkable disaster Tuesday. So many people killed - a true tragedy shown again and agin on TV channels all over the world, a scenery of burning and flaaing towers not unlike a bad taste Hollywood disaster movie.
It is horrible and close to unbelievable that some symbolic buildings have been erased or so many lives and positions concentrated on one spot, have sadly come to an end in one blow. Maybe even more depressing to think of is, however, that this tragedy event may for many years to come hereafter have a controllling influence on the world order, suddenly exposing anyone from a muslim background as a possible suspect. We must not forget that although the US people have been free of war taking place on their own land, there has been a heavy export of arms, expertise and men and a srong involvement in many warfare actions as well as other economic controlling manifestations of hen American super potential like trade embargo etc. Although I can understand the grief and despair of all the victims and survivors of the kamikaze pilot attacks, there is no evidence that this widepread terror organization has its outspring from one single nation, and I dislike the idea of the so-called civilized super power waiting to manifestate an invincibility, and if necessary extinguish one of the poorest countries, Afghanistan. Let them get those terrorists if possible, there is not rom for this kind of extreme madness around. It is not hard to understand that some of the oppressed people may find that their heroic actions has been a success; finally they got some efficient revenge. But if and when the US president ( supported by his NATO allies) decides to counteract with brutal uses of armed forces, will we then have solved anything to turn humanity into a more peaceful life together?
According to our educational and pedagogical responsibilities, we may consider how the potential the internet has already shown us many ways of interaction, support telegrams, mailing lists about September 9th, etc. I mean, instead of just adding to feelings of instant hatred and revenge often being first reactions of a schock like this, we may discuss how to strengthen peaceful and true global understanding attitudes.
Hopefully some of you can use my thoughts for more dialogue.
Susanne
