As Webheads met, Global Learn Day was halfway through its day-long journey round the globe. Vance had given a presentation earlier which Moral had attended. As we started our meeting in Tapped In, those present drifted over to the online presentations and listened in. Dianne was interested in Help Desk portals so we asked Michael for information on TAFE when he appeared. James is interested in learning more about Webheads for his PhD studies, so he talked to John about the research he is doing and which he has nearly completed, and we looked at the YahooGroups site for statistics on the drop-off in email to efiwebheads@yahoogroups.com. When Felix arrived, we talked about his new job in the treasury of a company in Bahia. Toward the end of our chat, Ebony arrived. Ebony is a student with an assignment to complete on Tapped In and she got us talking about the subject of disrespect of unworthy teachers toward their unfortunate students. Ebony promised to send us a copy of her reflection paper for EDU 111 and if she does, we'll publish it on our website.

Subject: [efiwebheads] Global Learning Day 5
Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2001
22:41:15 +0400
From: Vance Stevens <vstevens@emirates.net.ae>
To: Webheads <efiwebheads@yahoogroups.com>
Hi everyone,
On Saturday/Sunday the 5th annual Global Learning Day conference takes off. It's a round the world virtual conference starting at midnight GMT (Sat nite, Sunday a.m.). Starting at the dateline it moves westward, calling in at all parts of the globe for the next 24 hours. Included in the program there's a presentation by me and some of my colleagues at work, at 8 a.m. GMT. It might be of interest to some of you because there are a lot of English exercises and activities in the url we're going to show <http://www.mli.ac.ae/studentcenter/>. Then of course at noon GMT our usual online class begins, and it might be fun for us, or some of us, to see what's going on in the GLD5 chat room.
- The SPEAKER TIMETABLE is at
http://www.bfranklin.edu/gld5event/summaries.html
Times are GMT
- TEXT CHAT ROOM is at http://www.bfranklin.edu/textchat.
- RECEIVING THE WEBCAST AUDIO: You can acquire the audio for the entire
conference at
http://www.alinq.com/clients/gld/gld.asx
NOTE: You must have the (free) Windows Media Player.
- NEW PLATFORM FROM OPTECS: You MAY wish to view the event in a brand new platform. This takes about ten minutes to download the software, but makes for a wonderful experience. (they say in their email) http://www.cyberclassrooms.com.com/conf1/client.asp
- The main web site is - http://www.bfranklin.edu
Ok, hope to see some of you tomorrow at Webheads time, and if you're free, why not surprise my colleages and I at our presentation 8 a.m. GMT, Sunday.
All the best,
Vance

Moral finds Vance on ICQ during his GLD5 presentation
Moral: You haven't given speech, have you?
Moral: the next one?
Vance: Moral, we're on now
Moral: got it.
Vance: moral, we are presenting now
Moral: Ok.http://www.cyberclassrooms.com/conf1/host.asp doen't work for me. I can not see pictures and have sound. but the windows media player works well.
Vance: ok, that's my colleages speaking
Moral: ok
Vance: all done. Still there?
Moral: yes...i have been listening...only got a little.
Vance: yes. Audio quality was very poor here
Moral: That's not audio problem...it works very well here. like listening radio.
Vance: That's good. I was asked to wrap up (summarize) so I asked John why he put on GLD each year.
Moral: ok
Vance: no, I mean, that's what I did in the audio. At the end of our presentation
Moral: Oh, I got it...
Vance: They do this every year
Moral: But the cyberclassroom didn't work. service denied.
Vance: I couldn't get to it through our firewall. Had to use a dialup.
Moral: I used dialup, but still not good.
Moral: I may not join today's session...I'll date with a net girl.
Vance: a date with a net girl? Someone you met on the Internet?
Moral: Yes. A girl in Kunming who I met several days ago.
Moral: met online.
Vance: When you say you have a date with her, do you mean you are going to meet her now for the first time?
Moral: yes...i'll meet her 20:00(gmt noon) at a place.
Vance: For the first time? Never met face to face before?
Moral: yes Vance. for the very fist time. We have described how we lool like.
Vance: That's very interesting and very lovely. I hope it's someone you like.
Moral: I hope so. But it's hard.
Vance: Why is it hard?
Moral: It is hard to meet a suitable girl I like I think. because I never met her.
Vance: The internet is a good way to get to know what's underneath the person
Vance: at least you know if it's someone you might like
Moral: yes. i have met severa girls like this.
Moral: several
Vance: and what happened in the other cases?
Moral: I made friends with them...but no love so far. :)
Vance: Having friends is good too. Better than no friends. Friends can introduce you to people you might like, or love.
Moral: Yes, I think so. That's why I keep meet them. Maybe you should meet some at UAE.
Moral: meeting.
Vance: should meet (that's correct)
Well, I'm lucky that I'm happy
with my wife. But I meet a lot of people online.
Moral: Just make some friends. I think it's OK. I meet a lot of people online too, around the world.
Vance: but I rarely meet people here in Abu Dhabi. I think that is possible though. I just don't go to those chat areas.
Moral: Well, I think meeting new friends makes lift interesting. So I like doing it.
Vance: If you're 'looking' of course. I'm happy and married so I don't spend time 'looking' but I think it's great if you want to meet people locally. Does it make it easier for you to meet people?
Moral: If I meet a right girl, I will pursue her for love. But if I don't, it's only meeting...
Yes, it is easy to meet people. But I haven't spent much time on it.
Vance: I mean, is it easier to contact people using Internet than it would be through traditional means?
Moral: ehhhhh...No, I think it is easier to meet people in real life, for example at work. Because you can talk to them at first. But knowing people online is more interesting.
Vance: Interesting. Yeah, nice if you can meet someone at work and then get to know them online.
Moral: Yes. It is nice too. Well time for dinner. Byr for now Vance. See you!
Vance: ok, have a nice time on your date
Moral: Thanks and bye.

---------------
Hi, I'm Dianne Allen, staff developer, from Kiama
Australia. I am interested in professional development and networks which
support professional development.
---------------
DianneA says, "I am becoming more involved as an occasional Helpdesk volunteer .."
DianneA says, "guests are often interested in the language side of things .."
MargaretD says, "sounds interesting D8ianhne"
BJB . o O ( Dianne is a TAPPED IN helpdesk volunteer )
VanceS says, "Michael is active in developing what he calls a Learning Hub"
DianneA says, "and I don't know much about what goes on in Tapped In on the language side of things .."
MargaretD says, "oops Dianne"
VanceS says, "He says that Webheads is a good example of one of those -another is OTAN in California"
VanceS says, "I think Michael's and Otan are meant to be places teachers can visit to get comprehensive support materials"
MargaretD asks, "and what are we doing here?"
VanceS says, "yes of course, Tapped In as well. At Tapped In you get live support"
VanceS says, "The OTAN one is more a repository"
DianneA listens
VanceS says, "I guess Webheads is more an experimental exploration of what's feasible in free synchronous communications"
You hear a quiet popping sound; SRI_134 [guest] has disconnected.
VanceS says, "Lately we've played around with Yahoo Voice chat and groove.net (good but flopped when we trotted it out here), ..."
VanceS says, "Hi James"
JamesSi says, "Hi Vance, hi everyone"
JohnSte says, "Hi."
DianneA says, "Hi James"
VanceS says, "Today I'm listening in Windows Media Player to presentations at Global Learning Day"
JamesSi asks, "Did you give a presentation this morning, Vance?"
VanceS says, "And in a couple of weeks we become part of an online conference in computer based language learning"
VanceS says, "Hi James. Yes, I/we did. We showed http://www.mli.ac.ae/studentcenter/"
VanceS says, "We have a learning center running on our server and we mirrored it on the Internet and hope to keep it there for anyone who can use it."
JamesSi says, "I'll take a look at that later"
VanceS says, "Global Learn Day is about midway through a 24 hour program right now"
JamesSi says, "John - Vance told me last week that you're basing your PhD on webheads"
JamesSi asks, "How's that going?"
JohnSte says, "Yep. Specifically on interviews with some of the students."
JohnSte says, "I'm in the analysis of the interviews right now."
JamesSi asks, "Have you nearly finished?"
VanceS says, "It's interesting. They're playing with an interface at http://www.cyberclassrooms.com/"
JamesSi asks, "Any interesting results?"
VanceS [Webhead] listens to James and John
JohnSte says, "Not quite. I'm still looking at the data - sort of lost right now."
JamesSi exclaims, "Things have a great habit of making sense when you look at them closely and at length. So good luck!"
JohnSte says, "I hope to send each of the people I interviewed my results of their part for their input sometime during the next two weeks."
JohnSte says, "Thanks, James."
VanceS asks, "How many did you interview, John?"
JohnSte says, "6"
VanceS says, "That's a good number."
VanceS says, "Nice that half a dozen cooperated with you."
JohnSte says, "Yes, especially since they were members who have been active for a while."
PhilB has arrived.
R2 follows PhilB to
here.
BJB [HelpDesk] waves bonjour to Phil
PhilB says, "Bonjour, y'all."
VanceS says, "I'll be very interested in pouring over your results when you release them"
JamesSi says, "It's sometimes difficult to get others to recognise the overwhelming importance of your research, John."
VanceS asks, "Bonjour Phil, ca va?"
JamesSi says, "Hi Phil"
JohnSte says, "I hope to release them by the end of next month."
JohnSte says, "Hi, Phil"
PhilB asks, "Not bad, what bout y'all?"
VanceS exclaims, "That's really great John, what a contribution!"
JohnSte says, "Falling asleep."
DianneA fine
DianneA says, "but now that John's mentioned it .. zzzz"
MargaretD says, "Hi Phil"
PhilB [WebTeach] should be marking papers, but this is more fun.
JohnSte says, "I haven't been up this early in a while."
JamesSi says, "A touch of good old English flu here"
VanceS asks, "Are you in UK James?"
JamesSi says, "Yes Vance"
PhilB asks, "G'day, Margaret, what's new in the wild, wolly, wonderful web?"
MargaretD says, "he was last time"
JamesSi exclaims, "still here Margaret!"
MargaretD says, "lol"
MargaretD says, "not much..ask Vance Phil"
PhilB [WebTeach] looks pointedly at big V.
JamesSi asks, "big V??"
DianneA . o O ( still reading??!! that's what happens with research results .. )
VanceS says, "James also joined Webheads. James, you have to send us an intro so I don't forget"
VanceS [Webhead] while typing becomes aware of a glare coming from somewhere
JamesSi asks, "Yes, I will send one Vnace. By email to webheads?"
VanceS asks, "You want to know how's the world wild web?"
PhilB [WebTeach] gets out the arc lamps. "Ve haf vays off meking jiou tok!"
VanceS says, "Well, since you asked ..."
VanceS says, "How come you're not at Global Learn Day, Phil. Right up your alley."
VanceS says, "http://www.bfranklin.edu/gld5event/summaries.html"
MargaretD says, "commercialism maybe"
PhilB [WebTeach] has too many projects going right now to get sidetracked. "But I'll look."
PhilB asks, "Listening now, are you?"
VanceS says, "I have no commercial interest in GLD but I am interested in their program this year for the development they've made over the past 5"
VanceS says, "and yes, I'm listening"
MargaretD asks, "towho?"
VanceS says, "let's see, where are they in the program ..."
VanceS says, "trying to figure that out .."
PhilB asks, "Who's talkin now?"
MargaretD says, "not me"
PhilB says, "Friedrich Scheuermann"
PhilB asks, "?"
VanceS says, "No, Freidrich spoke earlier. He has a thick Austrian accent."
VanceS asks, "Chris Zeilinski maybe?"
MargaretD asks, "how could you tell it was Austrian?"
VanceS says, "Well, making no spurious assumptions, I took it from him when he said he was from Austria"
PhilB [WebTeach] is trying to load the audio & the chat page
VanceS says, "I was on the cyberclassrooms site earlier but the audio was so inferior I've switched to Windows Media Player"
PhilB exclaims, "Got it!"
PhilB says, "community radio... huge potential..."
VanceS says, "So, Dianne, this is pretty typical of Webheads"
DianneA asks, "multitasking?"
MargaretD says, "no students"
VanceS says, "We meet here and filter off to other places. Phil and John are both at http://www.bfranklin.edu/textchat/ right now"
MargaretD says, "Hi MC"
JohnSte says, "Sue left - she was sleepy and tired."
PhilB [WebTeach] nods
JamesSi asks, "Where are the students today, I wonder?"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Good day all."
VanceS exclaims, "And here's Michael !! Learning Hub Man!"
PhilB says, "I'll admit, it is interesting to be able to listen over the web."
JamesSi says, "Hi Michael"
JohnSte says, "Sue was here earlier."
Michael_C [guest] asks, "Learning Hub man?"
VanceS [Webhead] was wondering where Sue was - she's not at Yahoo
MargaretD says, "John said she was tired"
JohnSte says, "She told me she had been walking all day and was going to bed."
VanceS exclaims, "Yes! LHM!!! SuperLHM!"
Michael_C [guest] says, "still puzzled....."
VanceS asks, "Was she worried about something?"
JohnSte says, "No, just tired. Didn't tell me why she was walking."
JohnSte says, "We were on MSMessenger for a while."
VanceS says, "No puzzle Michael. Dianne is developing a HelpDesk facility and I mentioned your work with learning hubs"
Michael_C [guest] says, "OK - now I get it."
Michael_C [guest] asks, "James and Dianne -are you Tapped In regulars?"
DianneA says, "Dianne is trying to develop her facility with Helpdesk skills and knowledge .."
Michael_C [guest] .asses in technical enquiries?
DianneA says, "and learning about webhead is a bit of that .."
BJB . o O ( I just got an email from Susaanne. She's having connection problems but sends you all a message )

VanceS says, "Sorry SUSSSSSANNNE"
VanceS says, "(no z's in Susanne)"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Suzanne - sorry you can't be here right now."
DianneA [to Michael]: "I'm trying to get to know what activities Tapped IN offers to advise ande refer interested guests who make connections with Tapped In"
Michael_C [guest] says, "And I gather the range of activities here is growing."
DianneA says, "yes it is"
VanceS asks, "What discipline are you interested in Dianne?"
Michael_C [guest] says, "I'll get myself an office here one day...in another less busy life."
DianneA says, "I've been involved with TappedIn on and off since March .."
JamesSi says, "Sorry Michael - I was having a look at the global learning site. I'm becoming a tapped in Sunday lunchtime regular, yes."
IlhoS has connected.
DianneA says, "my interest is general professional development"
Michael_C [guest] asks, "How's the GLD site looking?"
DianneA says, "my icon has more info if you are interested, click on it .."
BJB says, "Hi, Ilho"
BJB says, "welcome to TAPPED IN"
BJB [to IlhoS]: "are you here to join the WebHeads discussion?"
Michael_C [guest] asks, "And you're from Oz Dianne???"
DianneA says, "yes and 10.30pm here past my bed time"
VanceS says, "Hi Ilho"
Michael_C [guest] says, "My official role is PD officer for TAFE SA Online Education."
Michael_C [guest] says, "The Intenet never sleeps....."
VanceS asks, "What's a url for that Michael?"
JamesSi says, "The global learning stuff looks very good, but I cant get audio on this machine unfortunately, Michael"
DianneA says, "Michael I have some more info on some more notes if you are interested .."
You hear a quiet popping sound; PhilB [WebTeach] has lost his link.
Michael_C [guest] says, "Well there isn't one precisely Vance - but TAFE SA home is (hang on)..."
Michael_C [guest] says, "Dianne - i'd would be interested to read anything about PD - with online focus especially."
DianneA says, "Hi Ebony"
Ebony [guest] says, "Hi"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Ebony."
VanceS asks, "when you say professional development, what discipline(s) do you focus on?"
Ebony [guest] asks, "How is everyone this morning?"
VanceS says, "Hi Ebony"
VanceS asks, "fine here, busy, tired, the usual, yourself?"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "If you mean me Vance - all disciplines - jack of all trades!"
DianneA projects Intro.
---------------
Hello,
I am Dianne Allen, an M.Ed. (Hons) = (research & thesis) student at
the University of Wollongong, south of Sydney, Australia. I am exploring an
intervention process to help develop a peer support group engaging in
collaborative action learning about how to improve practice. I'm currently
engaging in electronic networks, to know what they might do, and how, to
support the development of a relatively small, far flung network of
practitioners. My prior experience includes teaching high school science,
managing a public library service, and policy development for personnel
practices in local government, including staff and management training,
strategic planning and process review.
---------------
VanceS asks, "No, meant Dianne. So you focus on Science? Or secondary level?"
Ebony [guest] asks, "How do I get to the writing for webheads seminar?"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Vance - Dianne needs Groove!"
VanceS asks, "Like Michael, jack of all trades, Library support?"
VanceS says, "Groove is groovy, but we just didn't get it grooving here"
JohnSte says, "You're there, Ebony."
DianneA says, "My design for action learning is generic I think"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "No - and I don't want to ttry today!"
Ebony [guest] says, "Oh it is taking place right here?>"
JohnSte says, "Yes."
VanceS says, "I've been clicking on people's icons, and now I recall James is from Reading"
Ebony [guest] says, "Oh i am trying t do something for school so I have to write about what the seminar is about"
JohnSte asks, "Where are you from, Ebony?"
Ebony [guest] says, "Maryland"
VanceS asks, "Good one, Ebony. What kind of school?"
MargaretD says, "it isn't really a seminar per se"
Ebony [guest] says, "Anne Arundle Community College"
JohnSte asks, "Did the tornado the other day do much damage to you?"
DianneA asks, "So what is it Margaret?"
VanceS says, "Maggi has a point. It's a bit more freewheeling than most seminars."
MargaretD says, "we meet here every Sunday"
DianneA listens
VanceS says, "We never have a topic to start with, but we always evolve one."
Ebony [guest] says, "The tornado? No. Well my brother didn't have school"
JohnSte says, "And talk about almost anything."
Michael_C [guest] says, "V - the URL for the boring TAFE site is http://www.tafe.sa.edu.au/top/"
JamesSi exclaims, "And it looks as if you've provided the topic, Ebony!"
JohnSte asks, "What about the interesting site, Michael?"
VanceS [Webhead] writes Michael's boring url in a thick ledger he keeps on his desk
Michael_C [guest] says, "There it is John...."
MargaretD says, "it was a source of practice in English for the students who could come"
Ebony [guest] asks, "I did?"
VanceS says, "Funny thing, last week, Moral and Lian proposed a topic for this week."
You hear a quiet popping sound; IlhoS has disconnected.
JamesSi asks, "yes, the tornado (what tornado?"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "We have a lot of online stuff goling on but the websute is basdly out of date - no one's got the time to update it!"
Ebony [guest] says, "There was a tornado at the University of Maryland college park"
Michael_C [guest] says, "And our training stuff is at http://www.tafe.sa.edu.au/lsrsc/one/training/index.htm"
DianneA shows ProjIs to Michael_C [guest].
VanceS says, "Yes, Ebony got us talking about what we are doing here, and Moral and Lian wanted to find out Why people come to webheads each week."
Ebony [guest] says, "Actually it was in most of Maryland but a building was knocked down and two people were killed"
VanceS says, "They suggested (in Yahoo voice chat) that they thought we should have topics."
JohnSte says, "I've heard that from others, too."
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "I agree!"
VanceS says, "I said that anyone could suggest one (just hard to keep people on topics - we've been doin this 3 years, and know)"
JamesSi says, "The trouble with topics is that you can't get people to stick with them"
Ebony [guest] says, "The governor declared it a disaster area"
VanceS says, "I said, anyone can propose a topic, so they came up with that one"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Maybe every second week or something - you gotta have a moderator person."
JamesSi asks, "What did you say once Vance? Getting people to do what they're told on Webheads is like hearding cats?"
VanceS says, "But they never proposed it. Lian might be around here somewhere, but I happen to know that Moral has a date tonight and won't be here."
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Lucky Moral!"
VanceS says, "Exactly, and i have a great video to back that up."
DianneA asks, "so when you get together you update one another on things of interest on the web?"
VanceS says, "someone he met on the Internet"
JamesSi says, "Lucky man"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Yes Dianne - or jujst talk personal stuff, current afairs..."
VanceS says, "Well, we keep each other current, week after week, to the point where we have by now arrived here and sometimes we branch out from here."
JohnSte asks, "Ebony, you said this was for a class. What class is it?"
VanceS says, "We used to meet at the Palace, but that's gone defunct, and now Tapped In is the best imho"
Ebony [guest] says, "I have a topic....Disrespect....there is something about it and teachers that really bothers me"
VanceS says, "the best base"
JamesSi says, "I like tapped in a lot as well"
Ebony [guest] says, "Education 111...Foundations/Fundamentals of Educations"
JohnSte asks, "You mean teachers being disrespectful?"
VanceS asks, "disrespect? Ok, what aspect of direspect bothers you?"
Ebony [guest] says, "OKay I will set up the scenerio"
JamesSi says, "web-based learning is rewriting the book on learning and education..."
JamesSi [Webhead] ..s in particular collaborative learning.
Ebony [guest] says, "Last year I was a senior in High School......If I were to disrespect an adult, I would be in the wrong. Even if the adult was out of line in what they did"
JamesSi says, "And traditional patterns of teacher authority are out of the window in a web environment"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Unfortunately many schools are like that Ebony"
MargaretD says, "you need to respect in order to get respect"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Schools are all about authority."
Michael_C [guest] says, "And that, as James said, is one wonderful thing about the web - all are equal."
Ebony [guest] says, "I wasa in the bathroom one day....and my high school has a problem with smoking, so this teacher came into the stall while I was dflushing it and told me to get out because she thought I was smoking.....you can smell smoke in the air"
DianneA says, "agree with Margaret and that includes teachers getting students' respect .."
JohnSte says, "I have seldom had a student be disrespectful to me."
MargaretD says, "me either"
Ebony [guest] says, "I wasn't....I don't smoke"
VanceS asks, "but your problem is the teacher was disrespectful of you?"
Michael_C [guest] says, "You must have had different students to me John (ever teach 12-14 yr olds???)"
JamesSi asks, "the teacher just assumed you were in the wrong, Ebony?"
JohnSte says, "Once, that's why I went into higher education."
MargaretD says, "peoplejump to conclusions Ebony"
Ebony [guest] says, "Yes so of course I caught an attitude....not trying to be smart....but because I felt violated and thought was rude"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Exactly!"
Ebony [guest] says, "So I got smark"
Ebony [guest] says, "I mean smart"
JohnSte says, "But I teach in an area where students are taught to be respectful."
Michael_C [guest] asks, "smacked?"
JamesSi asks, "Where is that, John?"
JohnSte says, "Puerto Rico."
VanceS asks, "smart with the teacher, meaning you back-talked the teacher, and then got in trouble?"
JohnSte says, "At the moment, however, I am in Pennsylvania (on sabbatical)."
MargaretD says, "I havn't any difficulty with any age group"
Ebony [guest] asks, "Yea, but should teachers be taught manners?"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Yes!"
JohnSte says, "They should, yes."
Ebony [guest] asks, "And when can be out of line?"
VanceS says, "you have to earn respect (with respect)"
JamesSi says, "I used to have a few probs with teenagers in Greece and with Aramco apprentices in Saudi..."
DianneA asks, "are you training to be a teacher Ebony?"
Ebony [guest] says, "yes"
Ebony [guest] says, "high school also"
JamesSi says, "but everything people are saying about respecting your students..."
JohnSte says, "Maybe the reason they are not disrespectful to me is that I always try to treat them as equals."
JamesSi says, "is absolutely right"
Ebony [guest] says, "I think it iss different cultural wise"
Michael_C [guest] says, "That's a great start John."
Ebony [guest] says, "as well"
Ebony [guest] says, "Thats very true John"
MargaretD says, "I agreee woith Joh"
DianneA says, "then one of the important lessons you have learned from your scenario is how you coudl offend a student, and destroy their respect of you .."
Ebony [guest] says, "Very true"
MargaretD says, "culture comes into it as well Ebony"
Ebony [guest] says, "I was just wondering if some teachers think about it or not...i mean when learning about education it is so much more different"
Ebony [guest] says, "And maybe it is also being out of High school"
DianneA asks, "the next question for you is how would you deal with a student in the same scenario which would be resepcetful and following school rrules about not smoking in toilets ..?"
MargaretD says, "age comes into it"
Michael_C [guest] says, "In my experience there arte a lot of teachers who don't really want to be te4achers - they just do it for a job."
Ebony [guest] says, "There is so much freedom and things that could have happened in High School, teachers sometimes don't trust teenagers....i looked at how peopel treated me five months ago and now"
VanceS says, "language teachers certainly learn about respect, respect for other cultures and attitudes, moreso than teachers in some fields perhaps"
MargaretD says, "too true"
Michael_C [guest] .ands these people are not happy teaching.,..they don't even likke kids very much.
MargaretD says, "Ebony has a point"
Ebony [guest] says, "I think I would get an adminstrator and have the child search because you have to report smoking students"
MargaretD says, "my son complains about it too"
Ebony [guest] says, "but I wouldn't jumped to conclusions when there wasn't any evidence"
MargaretD says, "teens are not trusted"
MargaretD says, "they know it and it bothers them"
DianneA asks, "Does any one else have a suggestion about how they would have dealt with the scenario Ebony gave us?"
JamesSi says, "Right everyone, I have to go. Sorry to leave this interesting discussion. And good luck with the paper, ebony"
JamesSi exclaims, "And with the thesis, John!"
BJB [HelpDesk] waves bye to James
JohnSte says, "So long James, and thanks."
MargaretD says, "byeJames"
You hear a quiet popping sound; JamesSi [Webhead] has disconnected.
VanceS says, "bye James"
Ebony [guest] says, "I hate that fact to because our city wants our [the teens] trust, however ever rule they [the city] makes, limits what we can do"
Ebony [guest] says, "bye james"
JohnSte says, "I'm trying to remember what it was like when I was a teenager - but it was so long ago. . ."
BJB [HelpDesk] thinks this problem repeats every generation
MargaretD says, "they kind of make you yearn to be an adult and do the same, don't they"
BJB [HelpDesk] grins at John, the rebel teen
VanceS says, "It will be in our chat logs. I'll send a copy of my logs from TI"
Ebony [guest] says, "yea...but the biggest problem in the fifties were things like chewing gum and smoking"
BJB says, "thanks, Vance"
Michael_C [guest] says, "In the situation EDbony described I thnk I would 'ploitely' ignore the teacher."
Michael_C [guest] says, "I mean politely"
Ebony [guest] says, "now iit is smoking, drugs, sex, poverty, food, learning disabilities, single family homes"
BJB asks, "anyone remember duck and cover drills?"
JohnSte says, "You're right, Ebony, but I was also in the early sixties - and that included drugs, too."
DianneA asks, "I was asking: as a teacher how would you have handled the situation?"
JohnSte says, "I do."
Michael_C [guest] says, "Oh..."
MargaretD says, "the teacher had no business invading the privacy of a stall"
Ebony [guest] says, "Well I definetly would not harrass the student"
Michael_C [guest] says, "If i were the teacher i would simply ask " have you been smoking?" or ignore it all together."
Ebony [guest] says, "Apoligie if I have done anything offensive"
JohnSte says, "I sometimes think I learned the most from teachers who taught me how NOT to teach."
Michael_C [guest] asks, "Oh - the teacher pusjed their way into the stall?"
Ebony [guest] says, "Apoligize"
Ebony [guest] says, "Yea me too"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "If the t did that that it unforgivable!"
VanceS says, "I would get down on smoking in a public place as just an uncool thing to do but not make it a big deal for the student relatively"
Ebony [guest] says, "I was finished using it but it is the principal behind it"
JohnSte says, "I remember one time shortly after I quit smoking, I dry shaved and the wiskers in the sink looked like ashes. So my wife accused me a smoking."
MargaretD says, "It is not anyone's business if a person smokes along as they are not infringing on anothers rights to be smoke free"
DianneA says, "And the dilemma for the teacher is having two values to juggle: school rules and respecting another's privacy .."
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Yes Dianne!"
JohnSte says, "Zero tolerance - that's what it is."
DianneA says, "the same dilemma exists for the police force in investigating alleged criminality .."
Ebony [guest] says, "yea"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "I used to get into trouble when I was a schoolteacher for NOT enforcing the rules!"
JohnSte says, "takes away the teacher's right to think for him/herself."
DianneA says, "how far do you go infringing privacy"
Ebony [guest] says, "I wish I had everyone's email I would love to send you my reflection paper we have to do for EDU 111"
Michael_C [guest] says, "I thnk you can explain to the student that there are 'community rules'...."
Ebony [guest] says, "yea"
JohnSte says, "well, mine is prof@jhsteele.com"
Ebony [guest] asks, "How do I got about getting sponsorships?"
JohnSte asks, "What do you mean, Ebony?"
MargaretD says, "mine is MADenglish@t-online.de"
Michael_C [guest] says, "michaelc@chariot.net.au (luv your email address Maggi!)"
Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Mad English!"
Ebony [guest] says, "so I can become a member"
DianneA . o O ( dogs and .. and noon day sun .. )
MargaretD says, "well, may as well use my initials"
DianneA says, "you may not need sponsorship Ebony"
Michael_C [guest] says, "Cexpt Maggi's not a Brit."
JohnSte says, "Maggi, it has become worse since last night - now it is 1C with a hard freeze alert for tonight."
DianneA says, "all you may need to do is submit to join Tapped In it is free"
MargaretD says, "temp has dropped here too but not that drastic John"
Ebony [guest] says, "But I thought it was for teachers only"
Ebony [guest] says, "students needed a sponsorship"
VanceS says, "if you sent it to vstevens@emirates.net.ae I'll post it on our website. But don't send it by attachment. Paste the text in an email."
DianneA says, "student teachers may be able to join freely .."
DianneA says, "high school and elementary studnets need sponsors"
DianneA asks, "BJ? you there?"
VanceS asks, "why don't you get your teacher to sponsor you, the one who assigned your paper?"
MargaretD says, "time to get out the longjohns...lol"
Ebony [guest] says, "ok"
VanceS [Webhead] was responding to an email from Susanne

VanceS says, "We don't generate that much mail"
BJB says, "thanks, Vance"
JohnSte says, "Almost none, in fact."

Susanne can't reach us, sends email
dear BJ and Vance
Once more I have no access to Tapped In. What a mess! Therefore I cannot even retrack the address to the Sonexis learning tool we' tried to test last Sunday - how sloppy can one be?
Please tell me in case you can give me a hint (I know that they mailed something for my students in this class, you and Vance - but my own mail programme has gone bananas and deleted all older incoming messages, maybe from the server provider.)
In the meantime I will try how else I may reach some of you. Please say Hi to all those fuzzy Webheads.
Good Sunday
Susanne
