Webheads chat logs from August 5, 2001

Meet the people in the chat today

Vance Maggi Michael Ying Lan John Juani Sue Arif Felix
UAE Germany Australia Taiwan Puerto Rico Chile Japan Turkey Brazil

and Phil Benz, usually in France but calling from Orlando

After a slow start to the day, the chat rapidly filled. Rif was busy at work, but wanted to use Webheads as a part of one of his projects, and he expressed interest in joining us at the Summer Carnival August 8th (live, online at Tapped In). Phil Benz popped by and got us talking about designing Bots to automatically converse with students and other users in Tapped In. Michael is about to do a presentation on online moderation, and Phil, who has moderated 25 Tapped In sessions, was a source of expertise for him. Juani dropped by freshly arrived at her new home in Rifle, Colorado. Sue came with questions about language schools in the USA, specifically Texas A&M. Sue has never been to the USA and so we talked about how we might get people like Juani and Denilson and Ying Lan, who have all been there, to share information via Webheads for the benefit of those who were thinking of going. I suggested that Sue start a conversation about travel to the USA on our Webheads eclass list. But Sue's great contribution for the evening was to get us all TALKING again, using Yahoo Messenger's voice client. We had tried Yahoo Messenger before, but now you can do conference calls using Yahoo Messenger, and it includes group text chat, and even allows web cam access (someone mentioned that it might not be a free service for long, either). Finally, as I was leaving the chat, Felix appeared and said he was packing for yet another job in a different city. Good luck Felix!

Vance: at tapped in. I can write you more about it. I've got to go now and get a battery before the shops close. I just got back from holiday and my car needs it.

JohnSte says, "Hi, vance."

JohnSte says, "Maggi is in Reception"

JohnSte says, "Nobody is in Homestead"

JohnSte says, "excep me and Anonymous 64"

VanceS says, "Hi"

VanceS asks, "So did Maggi decide to stay put?"

JohnSte says, "Hi. Maggi is talking to BJ in Reception."

JohnSte says, "I guess she did."

JohnSte asks, "So, how is Texas?"

VanceS says, "I went to west Texas, Big Bend, and it was interesting"

MargaretD arrives from nowhere.

MargaretD's personal recorder follows MargaretD to here.

JohnSte says, "I've never been there. I was in El Paso for a few days one summer"

JohnSte says, "Hi, Maggi"

VanceS says, "I'd never been there either (talking about Big Bend, M)"

MargaretD says, "hi again"

VanceS says, "and howdy"

VanceS says, "I wonder why my DSL doesn't work. I'm on my dialup here at home."

VanceS says, "It's a bit contankerous, this DSL"

VanceS says, "Today at work everything was contankerous"

MargaretD asks, "ialup DSL?"

MargaretD says, "dial"

VanceS says, "No, I have DSL but also the dialup in my laptop"

VanceS says, "DSL is on the desktop"

JohnSte asks, "Are you back at work, or still in Texas?"

VanceS says, "I'm at work. At home actually. Had to get a lift cause ma car wouldn't start this morning"

VanceS says, "ah miss ma horse"

JohnSte says, "Michael is online."

VanceS says, "so not much is working today. How boutch'all"

JohnSte says, "Thinks here are about normal, I guess."

VanceS asks, "Maggi, you don't have one of those convenient recorders, or do you?"

VanceS says, "Yes you do, sorry, my mistake"

JohnSte says, "I'm giving my daughter practice in driving our old car."

JohnSte asks, "Vance, Have you named your recorder yet?"

VanceS says, "Just VanceS Recorder"

JohnSte asks, "How about you, Maggi?"

MargaretD says, "hat for..."

MargaretD says, "what"

VanceS says, "I think it needs to be plain what it is"

VanceS says, "I guess the icon is plain enough"

JohnSte says, "I just found it weird to be carrying around

"Johns_Personal_Recorder" and decided a book would be easier."

MargaretD says, "it is all virtual anyway"

VanceS says, "You can imagine it comes with a scribe"

JohnSte says, "True."

VanceS asks, "Did BJ mention the summer carnival Maggi?"

JohnSte says, "I was thinking of calling it by my secretary's name."

VanceS says, "She'd appreciate that. Then you wouldn't have to give her flowers."

MargaretD says, "yes she did"

VanceS asks, "any news?"

JohnSte says, "No, she would just have to take constant dictation."

Michael_C [guest] arrives from nowhere.

JohnSte says, "Hi, Michael."

VanceS says, "Hey Michael"

Michael_C [guest] says, "Hi folks"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Only us guys???"

MargaretD says, "hi mc"

Michael_C [guest] says, "Welcome back Vance"

MargaretD says, "xcuse me...then I'll leave"

PhilB [WebTeach] arrives from a carpark at the end of the universe.

R2 follows PhilB to here.

PhilB says, "Bonjour, y'all."

Michael_C [guest] says, "You're one if us guys Maggi"

JohnSte asks, "Why, Maggi?"

VanceS says, "Bonsoir Phil"

JohnSte says, "Hola, PhilB."

MargaretD says, "I'm not a guy"

Michael_C [guest] says, "And hello from me"

JohnSte says, "Here, "guy" means person."

Michael_C [guest] says, "OK then us guys and maggi"

PhilB asks, "Who wants to be a "guy", anyway?"

VanceS asks, "What are you doing up here in this neck a tha woods?"

VanceS asks, "having classes I mean, or just hanging out?"

PhilB [WebTeach] is on hols at his father's house in Orlando, struggling with AOL.

VanceS says, "oh, I just got back from my father's house in Houston, where I breezed easily through AOL"

VanceS says, "What's the problem"

PhilB asks, "So, what wild & wooly web things have y'all been up to lately?"

VanceS says, "It's a little slow lately. Summertime I guess."

PhilB . o O ( AOL seems to work finem as long as you don't try to use anything else over the same connection. <sigh> )

Michael_C [guest] says, "Well I've been collecting snippets of web based communication for a presentation I'm working on."

VanceS asks, "memory?"

Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "So be warned!"

JohnSte asks, "When is it, Michael?"

PhilB says, "But don't let me interrupt your sprightly repartee."

VanceS asks, "ahhh, what's the presentation about ?"

Michael_C [guest] says, "In October at a national conference here. It's ablout emoderation."

JohnSte says, "Ah, yes. I'm about to put e-moderator on no mail."

VanceS says, "We could use some emoderation. Phil is a good emoderator, btw"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Why so John?"

JohnSte says, "I'm getting overloaded with e-mail."

Michael_C [guest] says, "Phil - maybe I'll mine your brain for some insights........"

JohnSte says, "Also, I'm getting ready to leave for the states in two more weeks."

PhilB says, "I recently checked back, and it seems I've moderated 25 Tapped In sessions on language teaching this year. Whether I've done it well or poorly is another matter, So much depends, IMO, on the people present for the session."

Michael_C [guest] says, "I'm subtitling my presentation "facilitating a new language""

VanceS says, "I think you do it well, as opposed to us, who don't moderate much, just let things happen"

PhilB says, "Lately I've been investigating the idea of programming

Eliza bots to carry out online dialogs on specific topics with students"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "What woulkd your students think of this idea?"

PhilB says, "The people on GEN often discuss the mechanics of moderating roles, in high-level abstract language no less."

VanceS says, "I know two people you could get in touch with, Leslie Shields and Truna"

PhilB says, "The idea of using Eliza bots? Probably they would think it neat and want to program their own."

VanceS says, "They both do bots"

Sue [guest] arrives from nowhere.

JohnSte says, "Hi, Sue."

Michael_C [guest] says, "My presentation will NOT be high level absrtact language"

PhilB says, "Vance, As soon as I get home, I really ought to try contacting them."

VanceS says, "Hi Sue. This is Sue in Japan"

Sue [guest] says, "hello, i am here"

Michael_C [guest] says, "More based on raw data."

JohnSte says, "Glad you could join us, Sue."

VanceS says, "Leslie Shields has a great web page with her articles on it."

Michael_C [guest] says, "Hi Sue"

VanceS says, "Sue, you did very well with minimal instructions"

Sue [guest] says, "Hi, everyone"

PhilB says, "Michael, bully for you! Those sorts of theoretical jugglings make my stomach churn."

JohnSte says, "She has a lot on VoI."

MargaretD says, "i Sue"

PhilB asks, "Vance: URL please?"

Sue [guest] asks, "What are you talking about?"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "What is VoI?"

JohnSte says, "I haven't checked what Truna has yet."

PhilB says, "I also recently wrote a tutorial on programming Eliza bots for Tapped In."

JohnSte says, "Voice over Internet - You were cited in a study about it, by the way."

PhilB asks, "??"

Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Oh - good to know!"

JohnSte says, "by Tracy Cramer, i think."

JohnSte asks, "Didn't you get the message she sent?"

JohnSte says, "(or he?)"

VanceS asks, "Who was, John? Was that in the web page she just posted?"

Michael_C [guest] says, "I know aboit voice over the Net - butwas not familiar with that acronym."

JohnSte says, "Michael and i were both cited, and I think you were too, Vance."

PhilB asks, "Is this the time y'all usually meet on Tapped In?"

Sue [guest] says, "so fast typing."

Michael_C [guest] says, "This is our usual time....."

JohnSte asks, "What do you mean, Sue?"

VanceS says, "We have met at noon GMT each Sunday (somewhere) for the past several years"

PhilB . o O ( Gotta be fast on the draw, sugar. )

Michael_C [guest] )

Michael_C [guest] says, "(ignore that)"

VanceS says, "You can meet Sue on her webheads Webpage if you like Phil"

PhilB [WebTeach] nods, "Y'all ought to put it on the Tapped In calendar, eh?

Sue [guest] says, "i only see a small window here"

MargaretD says, "click on detach"

JohnSte asks, "Do you see a place that says "detach"?"

Sue [guest] says, "no"

VanceS says, "Sue, click on Detach in the upper right corner"

JohnSte says, "It shlu"

VanceS says, "Just above the text window"

MargaretD says, "alf way down Sue"

MargaretD says, "half"

VanceS says, "Tapestry ... preferences .. pasteboard .. logout ........ detach"

JohnSte says, "It's raining here now."

VanceS says, "This is Sue's webpage, Phil:"

VanceS says, ""

PhilB [WebTeach] shows PhilB the URL:

JohnSte asks, "Did you find the detach button, Sue?"

Sue [guest] arrives from nowhere.

JohnSte asks, "Sue, you're back - Did you find the detach button?"

PhilB . o O ( one of the problems with AOL is that it's hard to open new wiondows or switch between windows. <ngggg!> )

Sue [guest] says, "not yet, i am looking for it now"

PhilB [WebTeach] gets Note_53600 from the vending machine.

VanceS says, "Lesley Shield's Homepage including Chapters in Books, Articles in Journals, Conference Proceedings, Conference Presentations, Web-based Resources, Submitted Papers, and Papers in preparation:"

JohnSte says, "About half-way down the right side of the page."

VanceS says, "I copied that from"

JohnSte asks, "Phil, How about Truna's home page? Do you have it handy?"

MargaretD says, "need to lay down....later guys..."

JohnSte says, "OK, See you later, Maggi."

MargaretD says, "bye #sue...take care"

Sue [guest] says, "i find one interesting, i have no some features here"

Sue [guest] says, "bye, maggi"

VanceS says, "You can catch up in the logs maggi, cya"

MargaretD has disconnected.

VanceS asks, "Sue, are you using the Tapestry interface?"

Sue [guest] says, "yes,"

PhilB [WebTeach] gets Note_53601 from the vending machine.

VanceS asks, "Do you see a picture of my office?"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "I'm trying to cut and paste the URLs but they won't copy...should I able to?"

PhilB says, "Got those URLs, thanks."

VanceS says, "Pasteboard, Michael"

Michael_C [guest] says, "OK - I'll try it."

PhilB says, "Yes, you must use the pasteboard to cut&paste."

VanceS [to Sue [guest]]: "Do you see a picture of my office?"

Sue [guest] says, "no, i think i missed something"

Sue [guest] says, "i am trying to come in again"

VanceS says, "ok, choose the Tapestry interface"

Michael_C [guest] says, "Ok - got the psteboard happening."

VanceS says, "don't forget the s/ in publications/"

Sue [guest] arrives from nowhere.

Sue [guest] says, "i should give up, nothing changed at all"

VanceS asks, "Hi Sue, do you see the office map now, and our pictures? NO ??"

VanceS asks, "Phil, why should she not see these things?"

Sue [guest] says, "i can see your pictures, but there is no detach in the half window"

VanceS asks, "You see our pictures but no office diagram?"

JohnSte says, "It should be right underneath the pictures."

PhilB says, "On rare occasions I have had java errors when logging onto Tapped In..."

VanceS says, "me too, now that you mention it"

PhilB says, "There are 3 main areas in the TI interface..."

PhilB says, "The upper left 'you are here' window..."

JUANI [guest] arrives from nowhere.

PhilB says, "the upper right 'who's here' window..."

PhilB says, "and the lower middle dialog window."

Sue [guest] says, "yes, i have these appeared in my window"

VanceS asks, "Hi Juani. How's Colorado?"

Sue [guest] says, "but there is no middle dialog window except for TAPestry"

JohnSte says, "Hi, Juani."

JUANI [guest] says, "Hi..really marvellous."

PhilB says, "the 'preferences', 'pasteboard', 'logout', and 'detach' buttons should be along the top edge of this lower dialog window."

Sue [guest] says, "ok, it is all right, at least i can read your chatting."

VanceS says, "Juani just went to Colorado from Chile, Phil"

JohnSte says, "TAPestry is the dialog window, Sue."

VanceS says, "And we'll put the logs on the Internet for you Sue"

JUANI [guest] says, "I got here on friday evening"

PhilB asks, "Sue, do you have any of these four words in yellow along the blue upper border of the dialog window?"

VanceS asks, "How do you like Rifle?"

JohnSte says, "You also got up early this morning."

Michael_C [guest] says, "Vance - found tghe reference to webheads in Tracy Cramer's paper -"

JUANI [guest] says, "it's really wonderful..yes,I got up very early..but it's very hot here so I couldn't sleep longer"

VanceS says, "I invited her to join us but she never did"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "So Juani is now in Rifle?"

Sue [guest] says, "haha, i have only 3 words, preferences, pasteboard and logout"

Sue [guest] asks, "I want to apply for TAMU's english institute, what do you think?"

VanceS says, "Detach is way over to the right of those words, all the way right"

VanceS asks, "What is TAMU?"

Sue [guest] says, "Texas A&M university"

VanceS says, "oh, in Bryan, Texas? It's a good school."

Sue [guest] says, "the tuition fee is a bit expensive."

PhilB says, "the 'detach' buttoin should be right above the scroll bar on the right of the dialog window."

JUANI [guest] says, "my buttons are ok..."

Sue [guest] says, "Phil, i think because i did not download the new interface"

PhilB . o O ( Sue needs to see a web-seamstress about her missing button. )

VanceS asks, "While everyone is here, are any of you planning to join me for the Summer Carnival August 8th?"

PhilB says, "Sue, the TI interfaces do not require downloading."

PhilB says, "Sue, it's only on logging in, if you clicked the box in order to use the older interface."

Michael_C [guest] says, "From memory Vance the carnival was happeing at the wrong time for me - like 3.30 am or something."

JohnSte says, "Michael, This is where he cites you: according to one teacher (Coghlan, 2000), they are a part of what helps create an experience of community: Few but the very independent and highly motivated will do well in an online environment that does not seek to replace the lack of face to face contact with some sense of interaction and community. He goes on to report how for teachers and students alike The sound of the human voice has brought some of us much closer very quickly. and cites this comment from a student in Taiwan as an example: This is my dream to be able to speak to you like this."

Sue [guest] asks, "Phil, where is my lost button?"

Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Thnak John - I was just reading that!"

PhilB says, "Or perhaps Sue is using the Gmud text-based interface ratehr than the Tapestry java-based interface..."

Michael_C [guest] says, "It makes me realise how much I miss the voice chats."

VanceS [to PhilB]: "This is Juani's Webheads URL:"

JohnSte says, "Yep, same here, Michael."

Sue [guest] asks, "are you all chatting with voice?"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Maybe we can try Netmeeting again?"

Sue [guest] asks, "why not use yahoo messenger?"

JohnSte says, "No, we're not, Sue."

VanceS says, "No, we have no voice client now, unless Telcopoin is working today"

PhilB says, "Don't you lot like using the 'project URL' or 'show URL to x' commands? <g>"

Michael_C [guest] says, "Well Sue - maybe we should use Yahoo."

VanceS says, "will Yahoo do groups? Someone told me it would."

VanceS says, "I just uploaded a new version today."

JohnSte says, "We can always find out."

PhilB says, "Oops, I've got to get offline now."

PhilB says, "Ciao."

PhilB [WebTeach] has disconnected.

Michael_C [guest] says, "Bye Phil."

JohnSte says, "Adios, Phil"

Vance has logged on to Yahoo chat and is listening to Sue who has started a chat room. Sue is inviting the other Webheads present

VanceS says, "I hear you sue, I need to get a mic"

Michael_C [guest] says, "OK. I'll try it for a bit...if I can."

Michael_C [guest] says, "OK.."

VanceS says, "Sue has to add you. She's mysailing"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "What room are you in? Webheads?"

VanceS says, "Maybe. It doesn't show you online"

Michael_C [guest] says, "I guess you'd better leave me out for now. I'll let you know if I can get there in 10 or so minutes....."

VanceS says, "ok, we're just chatting. it works well"

VanceS asks, "Did you just go offline, MC?"

ying [guest] arrives from nowhere.

VanceS says, "Hi YL"

JohnSte says, "Hi, Ying."

ying [guest] says, "hi... I did not connected by ADSL before."

JohnSte asks, "Did you survive the Typhoon?"

ying [guest] says, "How are you? It is late."

ying [guest] says, "Sure..."

VanceS asks, "Hi. We're in Yahoo voice chat. Are you on Yahoo?"

ying [guest] says, "If I did not survive, ...I could not be here anymore."

VanceS exclaims, "very good ying lan!"

VanceS [in Houston] laughs

ying [guest] asks, "what do you mean on Yahoo?"

JohnSte says, "lol"

ying [guest] asks, "Yahoo messager?"

VanceS asks, "Why does it say I'm in Houston?"

VanceS asks, "yeah, have you got it?"

ying [guest] says, "I had... but my computer formatted two weeks ago."

ying [guest] says, "I have to download it again."

VanceS says, "We've got Sue and John and I in the chat"

ying [guest] asks, "Where is Michael?"

ying [guest] asks, "Maggi left?"

VanceS says, "Maggi was here just at the start"

ying [guest] says, "in the street or on the street"

VanceS says, "She said she was tired"

JohnSte says, "She said she had to go to bed."

ying [guest] says, "Oh, I see."

JohnSte says, "Vance, Sue has a question about Houston."

ying [guest] says, "It weird... for her... it is at noon."

VanceS says, "Can anyone hear me? I'm getting no response"

ying [guest] asks, "Is she sick?"

JohnSte says, "I can't hear you."

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Hi Ying! I'm waiting for my voice chat to install... how are you?"

ying [guest] says, "Not bad!! I bought a lot of books in the afternoon..."

ying [guest] exclaims, "I love to spent money!!"

ying [guest] says, "spend"

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Great. What kind of books?"

ying [guest] says, "I should say.. " Too bad!!....""

ying [guest] says, "How to learn English..."

Michael_C [guest] asks, "Study or pleasure?"

ying [guest] says, "Again."

Michael_C [guest] exclaims, "Good! always the student!"

PhilB [WebTeach] arrives from a carpark at the end of the universe.

R2 follows PhilB to here.

VanceS asks, "My mic tuned out ??"

PhilB . o O ( back )

ying [guest] says, "I got some problem with pronounciation and preposition.."

VanceS says, "Hi Phil. We're in Yahoo voice chat now"

ying [guest] asks, "who is philB?"

PhilB [WebTeach] 's borrowed computer has no mic. pity.

PhilB says, "Bonjour, Ying, I am Phil."

PhilB [WebTeach] projects Intro.

Philip Benz teaches English and does teacher training in web-based learning in the Ardeche region of central France.

ying [guest] says, "Nice to meet you."

Michael_C [guest] says, "brb.."

ying [guest] asks, "You just gave me an guide... right?"

PhilB says, "Konichiwa, Ying san."

ying [guest] says, "I am not Japanese."

PhilB says, "Sorry, neither am I. <g>"

ying [guest] says, "but "Knoichiwa""

VanceS says, "Sue is in Japan but both she and YL are Chinese"

PhilB says, "I was under the impression that many of Vance's cohorts were in Japan. Sorry."

ying [guest] says, "so.. I walk in the street or I walk on the street."

ying [guest] asks, "cohorts?"

PhilB says, "Ying, I have this nasty habit of bending the English language until it breaks."

ying [guest] asks, "nasty habit?"

VanceS says, "We're from all over. Consult"

PhilB says, "Cohorts in their proper sense refer to some division of troops in a Roman legion, but I meant it as a group of friends."

VanceS says, "Phil, these are second language learners"

ying [guest] says, "I am glad to hear what you say..."

PhilB says, "Yes, sorry, I shouldn't have interrupted."

ying [guest] says, "so... in the street or on the street."

VanceS says, "No, interuptions are welcome"

ying [guest] says, "I am confused with preposition...."

VanceS asks, "Are you following Phil, Ying Lan?"

VanceS asks, "Which preposition, YL?"

ying [guest] says, "I don't know how to tell from them."

ying [guest] says, "anyone.."

ying [guest] says, "like I walk in the street or I walk on the street."

VanceS says, "in the street, on the pavement"

ying [guest] says, "I read it from the book or I read it on the book, I read it in your book."

PhilB says, "I walk upm the street, dozn the street and across the street, but neither in the street (where I might get run over) nor on the street (as opposed to under it?)"

VanceS says, "They're confusing in any language"

VanceS says, "I would say in a book"

PhilB . o O ( up/down )

PhilB says, "Pardon my typos."

ying [guest] says, "You have different openions about this..."

ying [guest] asks, "How to learn it...?"

JohnSte says, "In Spanish the three (in, on, at) are the same word. (en)"

VanceS says, "In my opinion, words are like friends"

VanceS says, "The more you encounter them the better you get to know them"

Sue [guest] says, "hi, ying"

ying [guest] says, "hi, sue"

VanceS says, "You learn about them through experience"

ying [guest] asks, "Long time no see... how are you?"

VanceS says, "Sue, my mic isn't working"

Sue [guest] says, "fine. Ying"

Sue [guest] says, "i see, vance"

VanceS says, "cool, Juani and Michael are in the voice chat? I can hear, but can't speak"

JohnSte says, "It's Sue, not Juani."

VanceS says, "I can hear you. But I can't talk to you."

VanceS asks, "Can you read me?"

PhilB says, "IMHO, prepositions in English can't be learnt from any abstract set of 'rules'. You have to learn the specific preposition sued in each situation for each word."

JohnSte says, "That's true, Phil."

PhilB . o O ( used )

Sue [guest] asks, "What is your ID in Yahoo, Phil?"

VanceS says, "You have to learn them by using them, by reading, by being around them"

PhilB says, "And quite often the specific prepositions will *change* depending on regional variations of English."

VanceS says, "I can hear you fine, but I can't talk"

PhilB says, "Sue, I am not using Yahoo Instant Messenger, and have no mic on hand."

PhilB says, "Just text chat for this ole' lonesome cowboy."

Sue [guest] says, "i see, phil"

PhilB says, "re: prepositions, for example, in BrEng I would say: 'I want to catch him up' and in Am Eng I would say 'I want to catch up with him'. Even the in/on the street question from earlier is subject to regional variations."

Sue [guest] asks, "ying, will you go for your summer vacation?"

Sue [guest] says, "]"

ying [guest] says, "i am not a student.. I don't have summer vacation.."

ying [guest] says, "For vance, I just sent an email to you."

Sue [guest] says, "i am not a student too, ying"

VanceS says, "ok, checking ..."

ying [guest] says, "But it is a copy which I sent to a friend talking about Typhoon."

ying [guest] says, "Maybe you like to read it.. and correct it.. sorry . I give you my homework."

VanceS says, "ok, I can later"

ying [guest] says, "I am following words of PHil."

VanceS says, "Great YL. I plus 1"

ying [guest] says, "He is a good English teacher."

VanceS says, "There you are Phil. You're doing fine withthe non=native speakers. Keep it up."

PhilB says, "Just tossed in my 0.02 Euros."

ying [guest] asks, "tossed?"

VanceS says, "Like a tossed salad"

VanceS says, "it means to throw"

PhilB says, "I found quite a lot off helpful preposition activities in the book titled "intermediate vocabulary workbook""

PhilB . o O ( of )

ying [guest] asks, "Can I buy it in Taiwan..? Or I can buy it in New York later?"

VanceS says, "You can probably buy it at"

PhilB says, "Hah, found the reference on one of my bibliographies..."

PhilB says, "B.J. Thomas, Intermediate Vocabulary (Walton-on Thames: Nelson, 1986) ISBN 0-17-556144-3: a good source of theme-based vocabulary exercises."

ying [guest] says, "When I am in New York.. it would be cheaper.."

VanceS says, "Probably cheaper on Amazon"

PhilB says, "I use that book rather often, even after all these years. The photocopy police ought to have me arrested, hanged, drawn & quartered, though."

ying [guest] says, "They could not find you..."

Michael_C [guest] says, "I've been chatting in yahoo - great! But it's time for me to go to bed..."

ying [guest] says, "Too many people in the world, they can not find everyone ..."

Michael_C [guest] says, "See you all next week. Have a good week."

PhilB [WebTeach] nods

ying [guest] says, "ohhh!! it is time to go to bed."

VanceS says, "I've got to beat it too. I have to get a battery for my car so I can drive to work in hte morning."

JohnSte says, "OK, See ya, Micahel."

Michael_C [guest] says, "Bye all."

PhilB says, "Ciao."

ying [guest] says, "o.k. see ya... guys."

JohnSte says, "Bye"

ying [guest] says, "Nice to talk to you philb."

PhilB teleports to the reception.

VanceS says, "What about the 8th, will anyone join us? It starts 4 and a half hours from now on the 8th/"

JohnSte says, "I hope to join you."

ying [guest] says, "I can not get up at 4 am...or 5 am."

ying [guest] says, "I have to work at that day..."

JohnSte says, "Well, I have to go pick up my daughter's birthday cake. See you all later."

VanceS says, "ok, I'll see you on the 8th John."

JohnSte says, "OK."

VanceS says, "No worries, Ying Lan. We'll just show them around the site."

JohnSte says, "Bye all."

VanceS says, "Nice to know it's not just going to be me though."

JohnSte has disconnected.

ying [guest] says, "I am leaving..."

VanceS says, "Just 3 of us now"

Sue [guest] asks, "you are leaving too?"

ying [guest] asks, "Sue, you don't need to go to bed, do you?"

ying [guest] says, "It is 11:30 in Japan."

Sue [guest] says, "me? from today is summer holiday for us, one week"

ying [guest] asks, "Oh!! Great.. you are not a student, how come?"

Sue [guest] says, "ying, i want to go to study english in US, feels a bit boring in Japan now"

ying [guest] asks, "Are you rich?"

Sue [guest] says, "there is a summer holiday in japan, normally."

Sue [guest] says, "no, i am not rich, i would try to find some job to do at same time to support myself"

VanceS asks, "just one week summer holiday?"

ying [guest] says, "Don't tell me it is boring to be death in Japan."

Sue [guest] says, "for other companies, are 4 days, ours are a bit different"

ying [guest] says, "You can not work in USA without working visa."

Sue [guest] says, "it is boring to death, i have been here for over 5 years."

ying [guest] says, "But You can speak Japanese now."

Sue [guest] says, "for student, can find some easy things to do in university,"

ying [guest] exclaims, "o.k. Good luck!!"

Sue [guest] says, "that is the only good thing, maybe."

Sue [guest] says, "but not sure what it would be, after all this time would be only myself to go there"

VanceS says, "I'm chatting with a friend in another window."

VanceS says, "He lost his wife in a swimming accident. They were training for a race. She was hit by a jet ski."

ying [guest] asks, "Do you have compnies in Japan?"
