Webheads chat logs from December 17, 2000

Meet the people in the chat today

Vance Michael Maggi John Ying Lan Sue Felix Moral
UAE Australia Germany Puerto Rico Taiwan in Japan Brazil China

The chats this evening took place in the following areas: ICQ | Homestead | The Palace | HearMe

The chats started with me winding up a day of work at the language center where I teach. I was just closing down some windows when Felix came on ICQ under one of his aliases, 'Grisham'. (The time, 3:42, is local time in Abu Dhabi, which is 11:42 GMT).

ICQ Logs (Vance and Felix)

Grisham: (3:42 PM) hi there... How are you? Where are you?
Vance: (3:43 PM) Hi, I'm in Abu Dhabi, are you in Brazil?
Grisham: (3:43 PM) I am FTlix Vance.
Vance: (3:44 PM) I know. I'm just starting stuff up. Where do you want to be? Hear Me? Palace?
Grisham: (3:44 PM) is hear me still working?
Vance: (3:45 PM) I'm there now
Grisham: (3:46 PM) what is the www?
Vance: (3:47 PM) http://www.chariot.net.au/~michaelc/hearme.htm

By then I had gone to Hear Me myself and found Ying Lan there, and moments later, John. Meanwhile I had noticed Sue was on Yahoo Messenger, and so I invited her into the Hear Me chat.

At the beginning, we mainly talked. Both Sue and Ying Lan had had interesting experiences the past week. Sue, who works for a ship builder, had been on sea trials for three days, helping check out a new ship and its performance in the ocean. She apparently had enjoyed it very much. The weather had been warm, the seas calm, and the boat had anchored at night. However, she hadn't actually 'gone' anywhere, as this had all taken place in waters off the coast of Japan. Ying Lan on the other hand had just returned from a resort holiday in Malaysia. She told us about the green water and white sand beaches, and how much she enjoyed skin diving in the ocean there (she said she thought of me, since I am a diver, which was awfully nice, I thought). After ten minutes, I began to wonder where Felix was.

Vance: (3:56 PM) having trouble?
Grisham: (3:56 PM) yes...
Vance: (3:58 PM) ah, too bad ... can't reach the site?
Grisham: (4:01 PM) yes.. but can't get the plug in
Vance: (4:02 PM) Ah, bummer!! Are you using IE or Netscape (use IE if you can)
Grisham: (4:03 PM) netscape
Vance: (4:04 PM) Do you have IE?
Grisham: (4:06 PM) nope

By now Michael had arrived at Hear Me

Vance: (4:27 PM) Hi Felix. We're having a nice chat. Would you like us to try the Palace or something?
Grisham: (4:31 PM) going to the palace
Vance: (4:32 PM) OK, Felix, I'll tell the others. Someone just came to Homestead as well.

That someone turned out to be Maggi …

<Maggi> Hi...
<Vance> Hi. We're all in HearMe except Felix who has just gone to Palace
<Maggi> I'll go there then
<Vance> OK, I'll tell the others.
<Maggi> leaving here...
Maggi has left the chat room.

Maggi meant she was going to the Palace. She had told me on ICQ that she couldn't get into Hear Me (she too was using Netscape and didn't have IE). A short time after that, Moral arrived. Moral often visits us in Hear Me but since he can't hear us or talk to us there, we usually revert to text chat when he appears. Today, when Moral came to Hear Me, we decided to all go to the Palace and carry on our conversation there. All but Sue that is. I don't think Sue has downloaded the Palace browser yet. At any rate, she said she had to go, so the remainder of us were all able to gather at the Palace.

When I joined them there, they were already in conversation, talking about the pronunciation of 'multi' (too bad they couldn't have discussed that in Hear Me).

Vance: In May I'm going to Cyprus for a conference.

Mad: Hi Ying!

Vance: Oh there you are. Watch out she doesn't eat you Michaael

Felix: Nope.. I meant he lived in the same city as I do.

Ying-Lan: Hello...

Felix: Hi Ying

Vance: He moved away then.

Ying-Lan: Mad answered your question.

Mad: yes

John: I'm going to have to try that.

John: Welcome back, Michael.

MichaelC: Because Mad and Felix couldn't connect to hearme YL.

Felix: I have so crazy ones also.. right mad?

MichaelC: I agree with Felix's message.

Mad: yes, Felix...in a different way...:-)

Vance: Come on Felix, share it out

Felix: I love that mermaid avatar you have Mad.

Felix: are you sure Vance? LOL

Vance: It seems a lot of people are attracted to that one.

Mad: it's on the other computer

Vance: It acts like a magnet apparently

Vance: Got another one

MichaelC: which one acts like a magnet?

Vance: The totally insane magnet

Felix: the mermaid one

MichaelC: OK.

Felix: you can grab it Vance

Felix: Mc was faster

Mad: mc is confused now

MichaelC: John is good at cleaning up!

John: Good at what?

Mad: till when John?

Moral: Wel, I 'll get one when I have time.

MichaelC: cleaning up messes!

John: January 18.

Mad: let him clean up his own mess John

John: I thought that was a maid that came in and cleaned up after I left.

John: What happened to Felix?

MichaelC: Oh that was it John. Sorry!

MichaelC: A man needs a maid! (Neil Young)

John: Sure does.

Mad: won't say what the maied needs

MichaelC: a man!

John: So, who plans to attend the TOHE conference next year?

Vance: A friend of mine (a lady) used to say, "A hard man is good to find."

Mad: to clean up after? hardly...lol

Mad: how hard Vance?

John: Moral, you seem quiet today.

Vance: Who popped out, Ying Lan? I think Michael may have offended her.

MichaelC: no!

Vance: (kidding!!!)

Moral: The speed is slow for me...White bmw? You'll get it for Christma Michael?

MichaelC: Yes - from Father Chrsitmas Felix!

Vance: I was listening to Ying Lan talk in the Hear Me

Mad: it is a fantasy Moral...

Vance: Can you hear us in Hear Me Moral?

Moral: No, Nance. I can not.

Vance: Every time i hold down F9 to talk I lose my avatar in the Palace

Vance: That's what I said.

Mad: that one you could use to lose

Moral: @64,64 !It's Moral

Vance: I get it. If this window is dominant, and I press F9, I lose my avatar.

John: If you copy your avatar to F9, it wouldn't happen.

Vance: Moral, we have to get you an avatar

Vance: But I have several avatars

Mad: all the hearme sites want me to install the plugin again

Moral: Thanks Vance.

Vance: Crazy. Are you on Yahoo Maggi? Moral, tried Yahoo?

MichaelC: That's no pronblem Maggi. It's quick. It happens to me sometimes.

Mad: I did before and restrarted Netscape but it didn't work

Mad: I won't Yahoo

John: Has anybody here tried Wimba?

Moral: Not yet Vance.

MichaelC: Try IE - hearme is more reliable in IE.

Vance: what's wimba?

Vance: We've been having excellent voice quality with Yahoo chat

Mad: I won't use IE either

John: Voice forums and voice e-mail. It's not synchronous, though.

MichaelC: Why not Maggi?

John: Don't know where I heard of it, TESLCA-L, E-Moderators, or where.

Vance: If it's not synchronous, not good for us.

Vance: It has to be synchronous and conference. I'm not sure if Yahoo will conference. Sue says it will.

Moral: What's going on in webheads recently. I lost some mails.

Mad: principle mc and I don't need it

John: I was just wondering if anybody had tried it for non-synchronous communication outside of Webheads. (Before I try downloading it).

Mad: I think I'm going to try the new Opera browser

MichaelC: Fair enough maggi. You oppose monopolies then?

John: I'm wondering about Opera - I hear it's free now.

Moral: Opera is good - small, but doesn't work well.

Mad: that isn't what I read about the new version

John: Anybody try Netscape 6 yet?

Vance: I don't think we can rule out clients for political reasons

Mad: yes, it is free

Mad: nifty John, but still has some bugs

MichaelC: I haven't tried Netscape 6 John. I'm waiting for the official release.

John: I downloaded it, but find 4.7 still a bit better.

Mad: why not Vance?

Mad: more than political...I see no reason to use something because everyone else is

Vance: Because it's hard to find a suitable client and that's not a good reason for rejecting one

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Mad: what I have works just fine for me

John: Welcome back, Ying.

John: So what do you use, Maggi?

Ying-Lan: Michael c...

MichaelC: I'm going now. I'm going to try and install Yahoo messenger. Can't do too many things at the same time! I get confused.

Mad: Netscape at the moment

MichaelC: You had a question for me Ying?

Ying-Lan: No...

Vance: IE is the best and most reliable browser at the moment IMHO

Ying-Lan: Just wander you still be here.

John: I used to use Netscape exclusively.

MichaelC: OK! Bye everyone. Have a good week.

Mad: at the moment...

John: Bye, Michael.

Vance: u2 michae

Mad: bye mc

Ying-Lan: bye-Michaelc

MichaelC: Maggi - please clean up after the birds.

Vance: That's true,MAD I'm just being realistic

John: That's why I use it, Vance.

Mad: each to his own...

Moral: Well, I've got to go too. see you some other time!

Ying-Lan: Sorry.. I have to go now.

Vance: We all have our criteria. You have valid ones, but we want to communicate. Yahoo is working.

John: OK, Moral.

Vance: YL, nice to have seen you. Great talking to you.

John: See you, Lin.

Ying-Lan: me too

Moral: bye to all.

Ying-Lan: See you next week.

Mad: Have a nice evening both of you!

Ying-Lan: bye

Mad: bye

John: Well, I better get busy painting my house. See you all next week.

Mad: bye John...

Vance: OK, John, white with green trim, I was listening.

Mad: ave fun!

Mad: bone white

John: Always do, Maggi. (White ceilings, bone white walls, green trim.)

Mad: nice a bright
