Webheads chat logs from our attempted TOHE Conference presentation
November 13, 2000

Meet the Webheads in the chat today

Vance Michael John Ying Lan
UAE Australia Puerto Rico Taiwan

Flush from their success ten hours before at the Australian Networking 2000 Conference, theWebheads pictured above met expectantly online to discuss their paper at the TOHE 2000 conference. The chat for this conference was scheduled to take place in a MOO. Connectivity in the UAE had been abysmal for some days and I assumed that my failure to get into the MOO in previous days was related to that problem. When things appeared back to normal for the NW2K conference (morning in Abu Dhabi) and I still couldn't get into the MOO, I realized it must be a firewall problem, and I left messages for Deb Seward, TOHE Conference organizer, suggesting just that. Deb was asleep in Wisconsin when I came to that realization during my workday in the UAE, but when she found my message and replied to it just prior to the start of her conference at 8 a.m. her time, she told me that other presenters in the UAE had been blocked from the MOO as well, confirming that it was indeed the UAE firewall. She then offered an alternate chat venue, but we tried it and found it to be far inferior to our own 'usual' places, so we decided that Michael, who could get into the MOO, would steer participants out to our Homestead site, where he and I were waiting.

Meanwhile, John and Ying Lan had appeared on ICQ and in the voice chat at the HearMe site (not logged). John and Michael are both in the MOO scouting for conference participants. John sees a "monitor 2" and relays that information via voice chat. As the conversation begins, only Michael and I are in the Homestead chat. [Annotations to the logs below appear italicised, in brackets.]

Homestead text chat logs

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Funny thing she says another presenter in the uae is able to access it [it here refers to the alternate chat site that Deb Seward provided us with a small mistake in the url, which she corrected in email later]

<Michael C> Yeh - I can't get it.

<Michael C> And it's too late to mess aroudn any further. [It's past the 8 a.m. in Ft. Wayne, or 13:00 GMT start time for our presentation.]

<Michael C> I'll watch in the moo. But it's hard to tell who's there.

<Michael C> Can't see any list of names.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> hmm John's in voice chat

<Vance in Abu Dhab> he;s also in the moo. Do you see him there?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Are you in moo as monitor 2?

<Michael C> INo I don't see John. I'll check again...

<Michael C> Monitor 2 has been and gone. I'm directing peop,e here...

<Vance in Abu Dhab> ok

<Michael C> But it's still really hard to tell who;s there!

<Michael C> MOO's are weird!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> glad it's you and not me. I'm just chatting with John in HearMe

<Michael C> Well good on yers!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> John has located Monitor 2 who happens to be Deb Sewards

<Vance in Abu Dhab> You must be in different rooms. C an you get a map?

<Michael C> I'll see...

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Ying Lan is in Hearme and can't get into the moo

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Any luck with the Moo crowd? I've asked Ying Lan and John to come here

<Michael C> Deb just told me (via email to hit the update button and I can't see one. Also asked her if there;sanother room...

<Vance in Abu Dhab> hmm doesn't seem to work ??!!!

<John> MC is in the MOO room, now.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> OK, i'm having a nice chat with YL [in the HearMe voice chat]

Michael C has left the chat room.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I was telling her what MOO means. Do you know what it stands for John?

<John> Multiuser Object Oriented, I think. Although there might be one or two words left out.

Anonymous2057 has joined the chat room.

Anonymous2057 is now known as Michaelc.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> That's right John. John, you rememer Dungeons and Dragons don't you?

<John> Used to play it all the time. If I take time answering, I am also in the MOO and another chat session.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> So where are the people for our session.

<John> I think I'll just stick with this chat for the time being, MC and Vance

<Michaelc> I have asked Deb to refer people here..if there are any people ...hard to tell in a MOO!!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Michael, maybe you were supposed to attract them, like a carney

<Ying Lan> No Visitor here.. only our webheads.

<Michaelc> LOL

<Michaelc> I tried the alternative chat site Deb suggested and still no go.

<John> Same here, Michael

<Michaelc> This is crazy!

<Michaelc> Good. Glad that happened to you too John. It's not just me!

<Michaelc> And it's not 404 this time Vance. But still no chat room appears.

<John> It just says there are 2 others there and nothing else.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I'll try it

<Michaelc> Exactly! Very useful!

<Michaelc> By the way - hi again Ying!

<Ying Lan> Hi...

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Still 404 for me

<Vance in Abu Dhab> What url did she give you?

<Michaelc> And Deb is logging the chat in the MOO for us. Comforting thought!

<John> Yes, Ying, Hi, again.

<Michaelc> This was the URL - http://as2.ipfw.edu/interaction$/chat/tohe

<Michaelc> This confirms all I thoiught about MOO technology! Too hard without lots of practice.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> She gave me as1 ??!

<Michaelc> Yeh - she changed it in a later email.

<Michaelc> Shame really - lots of people did appear to log on at start time but God knows where they went....

<Vance in Abu Dhab> ok that one works

<Michaelc> Which one???

<Michaelc> #2?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> The as2 one.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Barely

<Michaelc> Anyone there?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Pretty pathetic excuse for a chat room

<Michaelc> lol

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Just JohnS2

<Vance in Abu Dhab> and me

<John> This one is much better.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I told Deb she could use our chat rooms

<Michaelc> Let's stay here.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> But she seems to prefer hers

<Michaelc> Good plan

<Michaelc> Let's be stubborn!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I told her at a quarter til 8 that I was in these chats and she could pop in and say hello if she wanted

<Vance in Abu Dhab> She emailed me back the as1 chat url

<Michaelc> I think this is our first failure!

<John> She seems stubborn (to be polite)

<Vance in Abu Dhab> It's not OUR failure

<John> Right, Vance.

<Michaelc> Yer damned right!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> We're a great success! This conference susldhgdhakhk s

<Vance in Abu Dhab> oops, almost slipped out there

<Michaelc> lol

<John> Is that German, Vance?

<John> I'm leaving the MOO and staying here.

<Michaelc> Don't blame you John.

<John> So, Vance and MC, how often do you use this room?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Ja diese Konference ist ser sheissisch!

<Michaelc> Check this: "The housekeeper arrives to remove JohnS."

<John> She does?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> sweep sweep sweep

<John> lol

<Michaelc> She did!!

<John> I hope this is recorded.

<John> So, what language is susldhgdhakhk s?

<Michaelc> Madness!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I'm glad you mentioned that John. Yes, I'll be sure and grab the logs

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I can put them on the same web page

<Vance in Abu Dhab> And now, let's compare conferences ...

<Ying Lan> Who is the she? Michael..

<Ying Lan> Compare?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> The housekeeper

<Michaelc> When John left the MOO Ying it generated that automatic message.

<Michaelc> ...about the housekeeper!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Apparently when John left, a housekeeper came out and cleaned up where John had been

<Ying Lan> Housekeep in the moo?

<Michaelc> lol

<Vance in Abu Dhab> What did you DO there John?

<John> I left a dirty spot.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I guess you showed them!

<Michaelc> Stop it!

<John> Sure did.

<Ying Lan> There is a lady here.

<Michaelc> I'm laughing too much here!

<Vance in Abu Dhab> That's the last time we'll be invited to a conference in the Midwest

<Michaelc> Yes Ying. That's right.

<John> Sorry, Ying.

<Michaelc> I guess if i leave I'll leave a dirty spot too!

<Michaelc> I wonder if I can fool the housekeeper??

<John> How?

<Ying Lan> It's o.k. I was joking

<John> I knew you were, Ying.

<Michaelc> I could maybe clean up my own mess...

<Ying Lan> Housekeep is a watcher in Moo.

<Michaelc> Yes.

<Michaelc> Vance - Ok with you if I leave the MOO now?

<Ying Lan> It is not good to be watch>

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Fine with me

<John> So, what happens if I leave the other chat room (the tohe one)?

<Michaelc> A street sweeper will move in.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I somehow doubt we'll be missed

<John> Just left it.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Too bad. They flubbed their star act.

<John> So, that is the famous Indiana University???

<Vance in Abu Dhab> That's not where you were doing your phd was it, John?

<John> I'm not sure I want to attend the session I'm interested in tomorrow.

<Michaelc> Someone called Marcia just spoke in the MOO....told her to come here

<John> No, mine is a small university in Indiana, Pennsylvania (Indiana University of Pennsylvania).'

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Maybe they'll get it together by then. Maybe it's just a bad start for them.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I guess we should be more understanding.

<John> Could be. This is the first one of the conference.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> On the other hand, I believe I had to pay for this and can't even use the MOO

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Oh, I'll try to be understanding about that too.

<John> Yep. I had to pay USD35.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> What a rip off

<Vance in Abu Dhab> me too

<John> And I don't even need the points for my next promotion.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> next time, I ask to see the moo FIRST

<John> I went to some of the practice sessions -- and even have a character there -- and they were better than this.

<John> Ying, how have you been since yesterday?

<Ying Lan> What do you mean?

<Michaelc> Marcia was the presenter for the next session.

<John> I mean, you are being so quiet. I know it is late where you are (10:00 PM), but. .

<Ying Lan> I watched TV last night .. and I got up early to go to my office.

<Ying Lan> I talking to Vance in our hear me chat room.

<John> I fell asleep before MC's conference -- It turned out to be too late, and I had to get up early to come to work.

<Michaelc> Well this was much more fun that the standard conference presentation. Pity you missed this mornign John. It went well

<Ying Lan> It was better than this one.

<John> That's what Vance told me.

<Michaelc> If it's all the same to you folks I might go to bed. Yes Ying - it was.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> A lot better

<Vance in Abu Dhab> Yeah, I'm going to go home too

<Vance in Abu Dhab> I'll put the chats up on the web

<John> I guess I better go to class

<Ying Lan> I want to go to take shower... I just come back from the yoga classroom.

<Michaelc> OK. Goodnight to you all. i did have fun. A really good laugh.

<John> Night all.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> ok bye all

<Ying Lan> bye-bye

<Michaelc> See you all soon. You logging this Vance?

<Vance in Abu Dhab> of course

<Michaelc> Kewl. Night.

Michaelc has left the chat room.

John has left the chat room.

<Vance in Abu Dhab> just grabbing the logs
