Wondering what to do this summer
Maggie chats with Vance on ICQ

On August 9, 2001, Maggie found Vance on ICQ:

94452752: (9:09 PM) hi, Vance, r u free? I don't understand a sentence

Vance: (9:38 PM) Hi Maggie, is that you?

Vance: (9:39 PM) Sorry, I was eating dinner

Maggie: (9:41 PM) yes, of couse me, but not the Maggi teacher. ha ha
it doesn't matter, could you help me please, I don't understand a sentense

Vance: (9:42 PM) Sure, what can I do for you?

Maggie: (9:44 PM) ok , here is it
" If you small? what the rock is cookin' "
that's a sentense a friend asked me

Vance: (9:45 PM) makes no sense. Is is 'small' (little) or 'smell' (with the nose)?

Vance: (9:45 PM) cookin' should mean 'cooking'

Vance: (9:46 PM) Can you give me any context?

Maggie: (9:47 PM) ok, I will ask her, please wait for a little while

Vance: (9:47 PM) ok

Maggie: (9:50 PM) well, she said she didn't know, it's a question from the other person, well, forget it, thx, but there is another one

Vance: (9:50 PM) ok

Maggie: (9:54 PM) I want to know when people get into trouble, what will they say, like, "shitt" "damn it" .....some words like "shit" is not very polite, but it's ok, I just want to know

Vance: (9:55 PM) Well, that's what we say. It's becoming more accepted now, but I wouldn't use shit with people I'm trying to impress. Damn it is more acceptable.

Vance: (9:57 PM) 'oh crap' is a slightly more acceptable way of saying 'shit' (means the same thing) and you might get away with it at a job interview - but these words are best avoided in social situations where you could lose points. They're ok with close frineds.

Maggie: (9:57 PM) i c. so are there any similar words that you can tell me?

Vance: (9:59 PM) People say 'fuck' which means sexual intercourse, but you often hear it in movies

Vance: (10:00 PM) If you want to be polite say 'darn' instead of 'damn'

Vance: (10:00 PM) oh, btw, are you able to reach the webheads homestead site these days?

Maggie: (10:02 PM) yes, many boys say "fuck" usually, which makes me feel bad about them. haha
I guess "damn" is easy to pronounce than "darn"
I can, the last e-mail I get is from Michael, this Monday

Vance: (10:03 PM) I mean can you get the website

Vance: (10:04 PM) http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/webheads.htm
I'm asking because Moral can't get it.

Maggie: (10:04 PM) I dont' know , I haven't got to the website for a long time, just reading e-mails

Vance: (10:05 PM) Can you try it now?

Maggie: (10:06 PM) I can open it,

Vance: (10:06 PM) I need to know the situation in China. I've moved from Geocities to Tripod to Homestead trying to stay ahead of the Internet censors in China. OK, that's good news. Thanks.

Vance: (10:09 PM) How is college? How are your parents and their store?

Maggie: (10:10 PM) maybe just some problems of Moral's ISP,
sometimes I also can open some websites which I usually use

Vance: (10:11 PM) can't open them? Yeah, maybe. Anyway I'm relieved that you can.

Maggie: (10:13 PM) oh, college is just ok, but I don't know, I have not much thing to do this summer, and can't find a part time job, you know, it's pretty difficult to find a job here, then I thought a lot, I don't know why, but now I think university is not a big deal to me

Vance: (10:15 PM) Really? Why not? I tell my son that university is the most important thing to finish right now.

Maggie: (10:18 PM) oh, don't worry, of course I won't leave school, but when I talk to friends, I just don't know what's important to me right now, seems that I just tried my best to pass the college entrance examinations like the other people of the same age, but I didn't know what I wanted to do before that, just follow the others

Vance: (10:19 PM) Are you studying anything in particular? Or have any teachers inspired you more than others?

Maggie: (10:21 PM) not the last term,

Vance: (10:21 PM) So you don't think the quality of education is very good there?

Maggie: (10:33 PM) sorry, something wrong of the net, I connect again

Vance: (10:33 PM) Have you been back to the orphanage? Or anything like that?

Maggie: (10:34 PM) I think the quality is not bad, just maybe I haven't found the target of my life now

Vance: (10:35 PM) That happens too. It's normal. You will find it.

Maggie: (10:36 PM) I haven't been back to, because the road was being fixed so we can't get there within 3 hours by car, that is 6 hours by car once including coming and going, so they stopped it

Vance: (10:37 PM) poor orphans

Maggie: (10:38 PM) so I find that this summer vacation is hard to spend, have no homework as I was in highschool, no jobs, I just take care of the store sometimes, and I have been doing gym every afternoon. But the ticket is over now. I don't know what to do next,

Vance: (10:40 PM) Read? Start a project? A webpage for example? Take a train ride, or a boat ride up the Yangtzee?

Maggie: (10:42 PM) I plan to go to Yunan province, that's a good place to visit, I know there are hostellings in the cities I want to go, but my mum doesn't allow me to go alone

Vance: (10:44 PM) You can't find anyone to go with you?

Maggie: (10:48 PM) I can't now, everyone has already been to somewhere this summer , and I don't want to go with someone I have no topics to talk with, and I think it's great to go alone...

Vance: (10:52 PM) I think so too. If I were your parent I would encourage you to go.

Maggie: (10:52 PM) but it's easy to understand their thoughts, they think it's dangerous

Vance: (10:53 PM) What would happen if you just went and didn't tell them, or called them from there?

Maggie: (10:56 PM) haha, my parents would be angry to hear that. I can't do that, first , I think if I insiste , maybe my mum would let me go, second, I don't think my mum can accept if I go without telling her, third is the most important, it will cost RMB2000 or more, I have no momey : ) because it's pretty far from here...

Vance: (10:59 PM) Maybe next year my family should come there and we can pay your bus fare if you'll get us into cheap accommodations. I'd like to go see Moral in Kunming. I have many plans for many summers, but that would be one of them. I can get around in China but I know it's easier if you can speak the language.

Maggie: (11:01 PM) really?
wait, Moral is in Kunming, haha, I will say more things about this trip to my mum untill she let me go, then I can visit Moral. haha

Vance: (11:02 PM) Yeah, I would like to go to Kunming. Is it feasible to go from Hong Kong to where you are and then to Kunming?

Maggie: (11:03 PM) yes, I think you should travel in China, that's a really good idea, of course you should go as many places as you can, and if I haven't been to the places which you want to go then maybe I can go with you, difinitely my mum would allow me to go with you

Maggie: (11:05 PM) It's pretty easy to come here from Hongkong, it takes about 2 hours or a little longer, then you can go to Kunming , it's won't be very hard, maybe I can help you to check the ticket for you at that time

Maggie: (11:10 PM) there are many places you should visit in China, haha, I find one more excuse to persuade mum to let me go, It is , "see, foreigners come to visit China from so far away, shoudn't I go to travel my own country as a Chinese?" haha

Vance: (11:14 PM) I'll suggest this to my family. China is a great place to visit. I've been there several times. But I have faced language problems, and if I could help you travel in the summer then you could help me

Maggie: (11:17 PM) no, you don't have to pay for me of course, but it will really be my pleasure if I can help you, : ) haha, now I have a little target now, that is to practice my spoken English first, otherwise I will not be able to help you with my poor English if you come

Vance: (11:19 PM) Right now it's just an idea, but I don't think I want to go to the USA next summer. Of course one problem in China this time of year is rain. When do you get your holidays?

Maggie: (11:21 PM) not really, it depends where you want to go, I guess, most of the weather would be fine to travel, I have holidays from about 6th July to the end of Agugust

Vance: (11:23 PM) I'll get just a few weeks. So, we can think about it, and check the weather reports

Maggie: (11:24 PM) yes, hope it work

Vance: (11:26 PM) Unfortunately I'm never bored. I' working on web pages now, and looking up a friend's diving record so I can take him for his advanced dive certification tomorrow. It's almost midnight but I have too much to do

Maggie: (11:28 PM) oh, then we should end our talk tonight, it's also late here, I should have gone to bed, but I want to find some information about train now, well, thanks for talking to me tonight, hope to tell you my good news later, good night

Vance: (11:36 PM) ok, hope you find something interesting to do. Write us at Webheads if you do. Take care now, and don't use any of those bad words I taught you earlier.

Maggie: (11:38 PM) ok, thank you. : )
you'd better go to bed early, otherwise you will get older easily
