Meet the people in the chat today
Vance | Maggi | Ying Lan | John | Juani | Antonio | Peter |
UAE | Germany | Taiwan | Puerto Rico | Chile | Mexico | Japan |
AND Aum from Tailand, Dave Kees in China, Susanne from Denmark, Philip Benz from France in a cameo appearance, BJB from the USA and DarioJ from Caracas who just happened to be in Tapped In, and Zaratustra
The chat today was one of our liveliest ever, with people dropping in from all over the world (we had participants throughout the day from Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, USA, Puerto Rico, Germany, Denmark, France, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Japan). Antonio started my day by dropping by nine hours before classtime, just to say hello and tell us about his plans to visit Dublin. Closer to class time, Vance found BJB in Tapped In. BJB is organizing a sort of online conference August 8, and Vance paused to write a 'blurb' for the Webheads presentation (or short description of what our session would be about). Meanwhile, John had arrived in Homestead , and he and Vance stood by there to catch people coming there and help them reach us in Tapped In, where the main chat was.
All students who joined us by way of Homestead were able to move over to Tapped In, and with so many guests joining us, The Tapped In chat was very lively. While we were waiting for others to arrive, SusanneN showed Ying Lan, John, and I how to create virtual pets and drop them into the chat. Juani joined us just as we were cleaning up after our pets, but when Dave Kees appeared, the mood got technical, with Dave asking how he could create forms and a CGI bin. Peter happened along about that time to answer Dave's questions with insights into PHP and a sample British Council web page. Peter then got us back on personal matters with a projection of his family homepage, but Dave couldn't see it, which got us talking about the Great Firewall of China, which blocks access to many websites (such as all Geocities ones). At about the time that Maggi and Aum arrived, Peter projected an interesting chat site with 24-hour a day streaming video, where we met Zaratustra and discussed the potential of streaming video chat for Webheads. We broke up after two hours of satisfyingly wide-ranging interaction.

Vance: (7:24 AM) Hey Antonio. What are you up to?
KROPOTKIN: (7:26 AM) Hey there! How have you been? I'm getting ready for holidays.
Vance: (7:27 AM) yeah, me too. Just two weeks.
KROPOTKIN: (7:27 AM) Great! So how's things?
Vance: (7:27 AM) where are you going on your vacation?
KROPOTKIN: (7:28 AM) Dublin, with grams & cousin =)
Vance: (7:29 AM) I'm thinking to go, for a short time, maybe a week or so, to Yucatan or Belize or Guatemala, or maybe Honduras
KROPOTKIN: (7:30 AM) Mayan zones, interesting! How come?
Vance: (7:31 AM) I'll be in Texas to see my parents and my son will be there from California and we're looking for some place close by to have a break.
KROPOTKIN: (7:32 AM) Got it. How old's your son?
Vance: (7:33 AM) Dublin is a nice town. Do you know it well? My son is 23. My other son, 16, is in California now with his mom. They're all together at the moment. I'm in Abu Dhabi by myself.
KROPOTKIN: (7:34 AM) I've never been to Dublin before, I'm looking forward to it. I cannot wait to see the Book of Kells and buy an authentic Irish tin whistle. :)
Vance: (7:37 AM) Yeah, you mentioned that before (piping)
Vance: (7:40 AM) Dublin is a nice town. Lively.
KROPOTKIN: (7:40 AM) And what are you doing in the United Arab Emirates or whatever the country is called in English?
KROPOTKIN: (7:41 AM) I'm actually going to Bré, which is southeast of Dublin, but it's not far from the centre I think.
Vance: (7:42 AM) Just so you can get into Dublin now and then. That side of Ireland is built up with highways and concrete, but if you want quiet and tiny roads go west.
Vance: (7:43 AM) In the UAE I am coordinator for computer assisted language learning for a language institute here.
Vance: (7:44 AM) How long will you be in Ireland?
KROPOTKIN: (7:44 AM) Two weeks.
Vance: (7:44 AM) only? Don't you get two or three months off for the summer?
KROPOTKIN: (7:46 AM) Yes, but as I am going with my grandmother and cousin and my cousin starts university on July 23 we don't have more than 2 weeks. We were going to leave tomorrow and stay in London one week and then go to Dublin, but my cousin had to arrange some things and present a test for Uni so we had to postpone it.
Vance: (7:49 AM) Your cousin is in Dublin or in Mexico?
KROPOTKIN: (7:50 AM) Mexico.
Vance: (7:50 AM) So HE has to be back in Mexico .. why don't you stay in Ireland? Or get a Eurailpass and travel around Europe?
KROPOTKIN: (7:53 AM) =) SHE has to be back lol I don't know, I might go back in 2003 for a longer period of time.
Vance: (7:55 AM) English is a poor language for genders of cousins. Where do you go to school next year?
KROPOTKIN: (7:56 AM) What do you mean by where do you go to school?
Vance: (8:03 AM) I mean, are you in college next year or still in secondary school?
KROPOTKIN: (8:04 AM) It will be my last secondary school year and then I'll go to college.
KROPOTKIN: (8:18 AM) Well, 'twas great talking to you after all this time, I have to go now, have a nice holiday with your son! =)
KROPOTKIN: (8:18 AM) Oh, by the way, what do you call the _ symbol?
Vance: (8:20 AM) underscore. Can I put this conversation on your Webheads web page?
KROPOTKIN: (8:20 AM) Of course you can! Well, see ya! =)
Vance: (8:29 AM) ok (sorry I'm at work, in numerous windows). See you later.

BJB says, "Hi, Vance."
VanceS says, "Hi BJB. I was just about to work on that blurb for you"
BJB says, "great, Vance."
VanceS asks, "You said a blurb is like descriptions on the calendar. I've got a calendar here from Kari. That one?"
BJB says, "yep"
BJB says, "you'll notice that most of the descriptions are about 4 or 5 lines long..some more, some less"
DarioJ says, "Hi BJB. I just can not believe it. It is really wonderful. I use to visite active worlds and this is going in that direction"
VanceS says, "ok, give me a minute to compose"
BJB nods to Dario.
BJB asks, "Active worlds is 3D?"
VanceS gnaws on pencil, appears to be lost in thought
A 'blurb' for Writing for Webheads: An experiment in international friendship through online language learning
Webheads is a community of learners and teachers of English who have held regular weekly meetings online since 1998. In that time members of the community have experimented with a variety of text, avatar, and voice based chats, in addition to the MOO-like environment of Tapped-In. At this session, Webheads teachers and students will be on hand to show you around the community at http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/webheads.htm and discuss with you its concepts and principles.
DarioJ says, "I think so"
BJB says, "I don't think TI will go the 3D route because some people don't have the software/hardware to use that technology"
BJB says, "TAPPED IN's greatest asset is that it is accessable to all browsers on all platforms"
DarioJ says, "I mean the concept. It is like a microworld"
BJB . o O ( most=all )
BJB says, "yes, the metaphor of a conference center makes the place seem familiar to newbies to tech"
BJB . o O ( although TAPPED IN has always used that metaphor )
DarioJ says, "It is a world not only a conference center ...you can buy objects you can have an identity (avatar) and many other things"
DarioJ says, "You can even go to the school"
BJB says, "world is a MOO term, I think. They use the term Virtual Environment here to cover all those activities"
BJB . o O ( TI is a modified MOO with a graphic interface )
DarioJ says, "yes , it is a Virtual environment....There is also a virtual university been built in Europe"
BJB nods to Dario. Some of their educators are members of TI
DarioJ says, "good to know. but here is my question...what is the relation of TI with companies like KiKo"
BJB says, "kiko has a suite here, but at this point that is the only connection. A rep from KIKO leads a monthly discussion on using their site."
BJB says, "some of the TI members have used KIKO to design an ESL webquest"
BJB says, "A member in France led that activitiy and it is just now reaching its conclusion"
DarioJ says, "fine thank you. I am member of KiKo and I use their site to design courses"
BJB exclaims, "cool...you should join the monthly discussion and share your expertise!"
BJB says, "Janet Ortiz leads the discussions"
VanceS says, "I thought you were talking about Philip's sessions."
DarioJ says, "great...I dont know that I live in Caracas, Venezuela and I am doing my resarch in virtual environments all alone becouse very few people around knows how to handle this type of technology"
VanceS says, "I'm ready with my blurb. Do you want me to post it here or should I email it ..."
BJB nods to Vance. He's the person who is leading the ESL group <Philip popped in later. Click here to see>
BJB [to VanceS]: "please email"
DiaLog follows SusanneN to here.
TimeLog follows SusanneN to here.
BJB . o O ( bjb@tappedin.org )
BJB hugs Susanne
SusanneN exclaims, "Hello there!"
VanceS says, "I was in Caracas when it poured down rain Christmas before last."
SusanneN exclaims, "Hi Dario and BJB, and Vance!"
VanceS says, "hi"
BJB [to DarioJ]: "SA is starting to have some people exploring this tech...we have several members in Brazil"
DarioJ says, "what is SA"
BJB . o O ( south america )
BJB says, "we have four members listed as being in Argentina"
BJB says, "I don't know how active they are"
SusanneN think this world begins to shrink, or to widen out.
BJB says, "you can look, Dario by typing /find argentina in mdir"
DarioJ says, "thank you I will"
DarioJ says, "well thank you BJB I will be around from now on"
VanceS says, "There are two other tapped in members in the UAE accordign to mdir"
BJB smiles happily. Cool, Dario!
BJB says, "the member directory is not perfect, but it gives you a way to contact members in your part of the world"
VanceS says, "oh, I just emailed my blurb, so I guess we're all set"
SusanneN smiles from her part of the world - Denmark, Europe
BJB says, "this can be nice because global time zones can create problems"
BJB thanks Vance for sending the blurb
DarioJ says, "thank you VanceS and BJB I will be talking to you soon"
BJB says, "have a good day, Dario."
VanceS waves
SusanneN says, "Bye, Dario, welcome to tapped In"
BJB wonders if Vance's email took the long way around
Johns_Recorder follows JohnSte to here.
SusanneN says, "Hi, John."
BJB smiles..got it, Vance
BJB waves to John
VanceS says, "Hi John. This is Webheads day, everyone"
SusanneN asks, "BJ, I forgot how to read my saved pages?"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Vance."
VanceS asks, "Is that about what you expected, BJ?"
JohnSte says, "Hi, all."
SusanneN hangs her head in forgetful shame
BJB [to VanceS]: "excellent! I can't wait to participate."
JohnSte says, "I'm trying out Opera for Tapped In - Seems to do a good job - and faster than IE"
VanceS asks, "faster? Is that browser dependent?"
BJB [to John]: "keep us posted on how it goes."
SusanneN asks, "I guess Opera must be a new browser I never heard about?"
DarioJ gets Note_49662 from the vending machine.
VanceS says, "I just signed us up for a summer carnival on August 8th, John"
You hear a quiet popping sound; JohnSte has lost his link.
VanceS asks, "He didn't take it all that well, did he?"
BJB says, "oops...that's been my experience with Opera users"
BJB laughs
BJB . o O ( don't take it personally, Vance! )
VanceS says, "never"
VanceS asks, "Is there anything else I need to do about the SC at this point?"
SusanneN asks, "Taking in your students, Vance?"
BJB says, "Nope...now I just have to bug everyone else to get me blurbs and then Kari can do the web page"
VanceS asks, "to the summer carnival you mean?"
JohnSte has connected.
BJB says, "welcome back, John"
VanceS says, "We're meeting up in my office in a few minutes for our weekly session. You're all welcome to drop in if you like."
SusanneN says, "I do wonder why Sylvia did not finish our carnival blurb (love that word!) , as was my impression from our meeting on Thursday - but my connection has been down for some days"
JohnSte says, "Sorry, I lost my connection for a few minutes."
SusanneN sounds interesting, Vance, can I bring some hot coffee?
BJB nods to John
SusanneN sings, ~\ i again, John /~
VanceS says, "Make mine an double expresso please"
BJB says, "I have to go do some weekend chores and give hubby a turn at the computer."
SusanneN hug Hubby from me
BJB waves bye
BJB [to Susanne]: "will do!"
SusanneN exclaims, "Bye there!"
VanceS waves
JohnSte says, "Bye, BJ"
BJB looks away.
SusanneNs coffee pot will be boiling in a few minutes
VanceS says, "As I was saying John, as you popped out, I just signed us
up for a summer carnival session."
JohnSte says, "Apparently, when you detach in Opera, and then look away at another page, when you come back to tapped in, the dialogue screen disappears."
SusanneN asks, "What will be the carnival subject?"
JohnSte asks, "What is the summer carnival?"
JohnSte says, "I take mine black, super strong, no sugar, Suzanne"
SusanneN exclaims, "John, I ha a similar problem all yesterday with Explorer, dod not manage to find out why!"
VanceS says, "August 8th, I think 4 pm GMT. The subject is a tour of our online class website and meet the students and professors if any are around"
JohnSte says, "My computer is giving me problems, anyway, so that might be the problem."
JohnSte says, "OK. 4pm GMT is 12 noon here. I'll be there."
SusanneN exclaims, "The carnival is a possibility to meet and discuss very informally, there will be sessions for 12 hours!"
JohnSte says, "I leave for PA on August 21."
VanceS says, "I'll be back from my travels by Aug 8"
SusanneN asks, "I am in a global network of online educators, we present something, too I guess about 9 am?"
JohnSte says, "August 8 is a Wednesday - I don't think there'll be a departmental faculty meeting that day."
JohnSte asks, "Which 9 AM?"
SusanneN says, "There are transcripts from the earlier summer carnivals in the ASO - some of them are real fun, like the virtual pet show, and the cyberobics"
VanceS says, "I was asking the same thing."
SusanneN says, "Well, 9 am californian standard, 18 my time European"
JohnSte asks, "BTW, how do I get this to say "ask" or "exclaim", etc?"
SusanneN grins
VanceS says, "I'm looking at Vpet show xcripts now"
SusanneN exclaims, "Use exlamation mark !!!"
VanceS asks, "Who wants to know?"
SusanneN asks, "or question mark ??"
VanceS exclaims, "Oh, John does!"
JohnSte says, "OK. I see it now."
SusanneN looks helpdesk.
JohnSte asks, "Calif Standard is +8, right?"
SusanneN asks, "Vance, what kinda meeting did you prepare for now, who do you think will show up?"
SusanneN exclaims, "Well, to me (central European) it is minus 9, we are 9 hours ahead of the califs!"
SusanneN says, "The time zone converter on ouor calendar is helpful"
JohnSte says, "Sorry, I meant -8 I'm -4."
You hear a quiet popping sound; DarioJ has lost his link.
SusanneN says, "Confuses herself with all those time zones"
JohnSte says, "That means 5 AM for me."
VanceS says, "It's our weekly webheads class. you can see who has showed up for each week this year at http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/chat2001.htm"
SusanneN says, "Webheads sounds nice"
VanceS says, "I like to talk in GMT. Right now it's coming on noon."
SusanneN says, "Yeah, GMY should be the standard, my time is 2 pm."
JohnSte says, "Ying is in Homestead."
JohnSte says, "And here it is going on 8 am"
VanceS says, "Webheads is nice. We're meeting in a few minutes, but in fact, people just turn up any time over the next couple of hours."
VanceS asks, "I'm in Abu Dhabi, 4 p.m. Is Ying Lan willing to come here, John?"
JohnSte says, "She said she is on her way."
VanceS asks, "Excellent. So you're keeping an eye on Homestead?"
JohnSte says, "Yep."
VanceS says, "We have a lot of places we meet Susanne. They're mostly at the top of that url I just gave you."
JohnSte says, "I invited some of the IESP students to drop in. I don't think many of them will, though."
SusanneN asks, "I see. But my browser is not able to let me have another window today, so please tell me some more?"
VanceS says, "Maybe we should go up to my office before that gets too complicated"
SusanneN [helpdesk] wonders what kind of problem this is, must be related to java?
JohnSte says, "We are ending out summer session this week."
VanceS asks, "Memory perhaps?"
SusanneN exclaims, "Yes, let us go ahead!"
VanceS says, "ok, I'll go there and you can /join vances"
SusanneN says, "Maybe, I have tried to gove it some more virtual memory"

JohnSte says, "Hi. I'm here"
SusanneN tiptoes in without a sound
DiaLog follows SusanneN to here.
TimeLog follows SusanneN to here.
SusanneN exclaims, "Ah, here you are!"
SusanneN picks up TimeLog.
VanceS says, "hi"
VanceS asks, "What's a timelog?"
SusanneN says, "Well, it's another recorder, marking the time of entries"
JohnSte says, "Ying is trying to get here."
JohnSte asks, "How do you get a timelog?"
VanceS says, "I'm popping by Homestead"
SusanneN says, "I am currently doing some research on Tapped In as a community, but I do not use it much, so I just turned it off"
SusanneN says, "Judi asked me to test it for her"
VanceS asks, "You turned off tapped in, or the time log?"
SusanneN exclaims, "I turned off my timelog!"
JohnSte asks, "Is it very helpful?"
VanceS asks, "what is a timelog?"
SusanneN says, "It may be useful to see how long time tehre is between the entries, or how many words are a said in a period"
SusanneN drops TimeLog (recording).
SusanneN asks, "You may examine it?"
JohnSte says, "That's what I was thinking. It is what I like about ICQ."
JohnSte asks, "How do you examine something here?"
VanceS says, "yeah, ICQ is good for that"
SusanneN says, "Look in what's here, I think you may clikc on it"
SusanneN . o O ( remember to update the screen )
SusanneN asks, "Did you se it?"
JohnSte asks, "Yep. Looks interesting. How can I get one?"
VanceS says, "I don't see it"
JohnSte says, "update the screen, Vance."
VanceS says, "sorry, at what's here (not who's here). I see it now."
SusanneN says, "I actually wonder if it is possible for others to read my log"
VanceS asks, "You also have a dialog? What's that?"
SusanneN asks, "Well, it doea not say much?"
JohnSte says, "I'm guessing that is a recorder without the time stamp."
SusanneN says, "That's my ordinary recorder..."
SusanneN says, "I just renamed them"
SusanneN says, "many people give personal recorders like pet names"
JohnSte says, "It's better then "John's Personal Recorder""
SusanneN says, "yes"
VanceS says, "John has joined us as a researcher as well."
VanceS says, "I'm trying to help Ying Lan reach here. We're all over the place on Sundays, Suzanne"
JohnSte says, "I'm researching the use of the Internet for offering ESL classes. I'm interviewing students to find how they feel about online classes."
JohnSte says, "What their experiences are, etc."
SusanneN says, "You may just ask for it if you like, they're called a "generic, personal prefixed recorder""
VanceS asks, "have you done any more with our group?"

SusanneN [webhead] is right back soon
VanceS says, "Playing with virtual pets is as serious as we've been for a long time"
SusanneN [webhead] giggles
VanceS says, "So how do I get Muscat to appear with Holly and Guinea Pig"
SusanneN asks, "you drop it?"
VanceS says, "Ahhh ..."
SusanneN says, "drop it means we can all see it, and play with her"
SusanneN says, "get it means they go back to your pocket"

SusanneN gobbles up blackberries.
VanceS says, "I guess i have to name my cat first"
SusanneN says, "we may need some cat litter"
SusanneN [webhead] creates a virtual cat litter tray
JohnSte asks, "How do you create something?"
SusanneN says, "This time it is only created by a text, the rest is sheer imagination"
SusanneN [webhead] smells the old dirty cat litter smell
SusanneN [webhead] chages the litter tray
VanceS wonderses how to name his cat Musky.
SusanneN [webhead]s nose wriggles from side to side, no more cat odour!

SusanneN asks, "Maybe remane?"
JohnSte says, "I think it is /rename hi to Juani."
DaveK asks, "Vance, do you use Tapped In much?"
VanceS says, "Increasingly so, Dave"
SusanneN says, "No, we are not allowed to change character names"
SusanneN says, "either you stai HI for now, or login an"
SusanneN says, "login again"
SusanneN says, "But you may use another shortcut..."
DaveK asks, "Do you use it to teach lessons?"
SusanneN says, "set your mood to be Juani"
VanceS exclaims, "ah ha!"
SusanneN says, "type /mood juani"
JohnSte asks, "How do you do that, Susanne?"
SusanneN looks sue.
SusanneN says, "you may always decide for another mood"
VanceS says, "This is a lesson Dave. It's a lesson on how to create virtual pets and change your mood in tapped in and enjoy being with close online cyberfriends"
SusanneN says, "the mood will show when you use emotes"
DaveK says, "OK"
hi [guest] says, "mood/Juani"
SusanneN says, "Just put the slacsh before the command..."
SusanneN says, "type /mood juani"
SusanneN asks, "Dose that work for you?"
SusanneN [sue] wonders if guests can change mood
VanceS asks, "Is your friend with you, Dave?"
hi [guest] says, "I don think I can"
The mean VanceS teases Muscat. What a bully!
DaveK says, "I just phoned him and sent him URLs for here and homestead. He'll try to connect with us."
SusanneN asks, "What IS homestead?"
VanceS says, "http://www.homestead.com/vstevens"
SusanneN [sue] is very curious
VanceS says, "It's a place we used to easily meet on the web"
SusanneN says, "I see" <Click here to follow Susanne to Homestead -->
JohnSte says, "It is a fairly simple chat."
JohnSte says, "room"
VanceS says, "So John and I are keeping our eyes out there, and catching people as they come in. Someone just joined us now."
SusanneN says, "I just found the link on your homepage too ( com,ing in from the cat side"
SusanneN says, "Me :-)"
VanceS says, "I thought you couldn't get another browser window open"
SusanneN says, "well, now it worked for me :-)"
SusanneN exclaims, "Hi hi!"
SusanneN [sue] smiles to Juani
VanceS says, "Hi is Juani. Juani is about to go to Colorado and live for a year."
VanceS says, "And Ying Lan is about to go to New York and live for a year."
SusanneN exclaims, "far out!"
VanceS says, "Juani is in Chile now (freezing cold down there)."
SusanneN says, "My daughter just left for mexico to stay for a year :-)"
VanceS says, "Ying Lan is in Taiwan, where I guess it's almost as hot as Abu Dhabi"
VanceS says, "That's where I am."
Juani [guest] arrives from nowhere.
SusanneN says, "In denmark (wher I am) it is pretty hot today"
VanceS says, "Maggi in Germany is consoling someone in Texas and will be along shortly"
VanceS says, "And Peter Williams in Japan has just logged on Yahoo"
JohnSte says, "Welcome back, Juani."
SusanneN says, "quite multi cultural and multi topographical"
Juani [guest] says, "thanh you"
VanceS exclaims, "So John was right!"
VanceS exclaims, "Well done, John!"
JohnSte says, "I had a couple of my students do that one day."
VanceS says, "Peter is working his way over here."
Juani [guest] asks, "what did they do?"
DaveK asks, "Vance, I was wondering if you can make webpages in Frontpage and then upload them to Homestead?"
VanceS says, "I don't see why not."
VanceS says, "The only thing is the host has to support the Front Page extensions if you use them in your web pages"
Peter [guest] arrives from nowhere.
VanceS says, "Homestead probably does, but I'm not sure."
VanceS says, "Hey there Peter, you made it easily."
Peter [guest] says, "yup"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Peter."
Peter [guest] says, "no problem"
Peter [guest] says, "hi all"
DaveK asks, "Do you know if you can use CGI scripts to sendmail direct from webpages at Homestead?"
Juani [guest] says, "Hi Peter"
Peter [guest] asks, "do you have access to CGI bin?"
Peter [guest] says, "hi juani"
DaveK says, "I really don't know anything about CGI"
VanceS says, "Not sure about that, dave"
Peter [guest] says, "I think it's unlikely"
VanceS says, "But they do have a CGI collection I believe"
JohnSte says, "I think the CGI script has to be on the server to be used."
Juani [guest] asks, "whatis CGI?"
Peter [guest] says, "usually free providers don't give you that access"
VanceS asks, "computer gateway interface?"
Juani [guest] says, "ok.thanks"
VanceS says, "Homestead has a professional side, and Geocities has one that's about $10 a month, not a bad deal really"
DaveK says, "You can make a webpage that has a test on it. Then when the student takes the test the results will automatically sent to you. But the server, where your webpage is, has to have CGI on it and a certain Pearlscript program on it. Something like that."
VanceS says, "A CGI is a program that users run when they click on things on your web page"
JohnSte says, "So much? I only pay $5 a month at geocities."
Peter [guest] says, "My site uses PHP which is similar to CGI but a little easier to manipulate"
VanceS says, "Ah, use http://www.response-o-matic.com"
SusanneN says, "I was away for a while, sorry"
SusanneN [sue] is so uncivilized - no personal homepage yet
Peter [guest] says, "haven't updated mine for a while"
VanceS says, "I just verified the url. They store the scripts on their server and you create forms and put them on your website, but send the submitted responses to THEIR server, and get email back with the responsesR"
VanceS says, "You have to process the text responses at your end but code to do that is pretty easily knocked out"
VanceS asks, "what is PHP?"
DaveK says, "Thanks for the lead, Vance."
Juani [guest] says, "hats the way some universities are working now"
JohnSte says, "Yeah. I'm going to check it out too."
Peter [guest] says, "feb 4th to be exact but if you want to see pictures of my new baby they are at http://www.geocities.com/hdep65/x2.htm"
Peter [guest] says, "PHP is wonderful Vance"
VanceS says, "Maybe it's $5 John, a small amt."
Peter [guest] says, "hard to describe"
SusanneN [to Peter [guest]]: "I am fond of babies, wait a sec..."
VanceS wonders what PHP is exactly <Next day, Dave Kees sends email with URL explaining further. See it here -->
Peter [guest] says, "does everything that CGI scripts will do and a whole lot more"
Peter [guest] says, "it's a scritpting language"
Peter [guest] says, "open source"
Peter [guest] says, "so free to use"
Peter [guest] says, "and very easy to use"
Peter [guest] says, "have a look at http://www.bcjapanonline.com/BUPS/"
VanceS asks, "Ok, so you program your CGI's in PHP?"
DaveK asks, "Peter, is it dependant on the server's setup at all, like CGI?"
Peter [guest] says, "well better to say, I go and hunt ready made PHP scripts"
Peter [guest] says, "yes Dave"
Peter [guest] says, "it must be pre-installed"
Peter [guest] says, "so I think it's really worth buying some web space"
Peter [guest] says, "got so frustrated trying to use free services"
Peter [guest] says, "and for $20 a month, hassle free hosting"
Peter [guest] says, "totally worth it"
Peter [guest] says, "the URL which I posted previously is all PHP"
Peter [guest] says, "There is a backend"
Peter [guest] says, "whcih allows teachers with no HTML experience to post news"
Peter [guest] says, "and listenings"
VanceS says, "It scrolled off the screen. There's a trick to copy/pasting it but I couldn't work it out"
Peter [guest] says, "and anything else they want"
DaveK asks, "what's the URL?"
Peter [guest] says, "http://www.bcjapanonline.com/BUPS/"
Peter [guest] says, "it's an experimental site"
Peter [guest] says, "which I made for the British Council in Tokyo"
Peter [guest] says, "it was totally controlled by the students and teachers on the course"
SusanneN [to Peter [guest]]: "Leo, what a boy!"
Peter [guest] says, "It's not perfect, but very easy to use"
Peter [guest] says, "lol"
Peter [guest] asks, "pretty cute, huh?"
SusanneN says, "Yes, a very cute kid"
Juani [guest] says, "yes..very nice"
Peter [guest] says, "prud father blushes"
Juani [guest] exclaims, "congratulations!"
Peter [guest] says, "proud"
SusanneN [sue] thinks he has inherited his mother's beautiful nose
JohnSte says, "congratulations, peter."
Peter [guest] says, "father hopes so"
Peter [guest] says, "father's nose is a bit of a schnozz"
VanceS asks, "nice page (bups) can you repeat the url you're all looking at, or project it?"
Peter [guest] projects SusanneN [sue]. My name is Susanne Nyrop, a senior research student from Denmark, University of Education, Copenhagen. A Tappedin member since november 2000, now & then volunteering for helpdesk. My interest is the development of informal digital networks for educators.
Peter [guest] says, "hmmm"
Peter [guest] says, "how do I project"
SusanneN [sue] waves hi to peter
SusanneN says, "type /project nameofurl"
SusanneN says, "But always remember to warn us as everyone will geti it on an extra window"
Peter [guest] says, "OK"
Peter [guest] asks, "will do it now, OK?"
SusanneN says, "I am ready :-)"
Peter [guest] projects the URL: http://www.geocities.com/hdep65/x2.htm
Peter [guest] says, "rather old I'm afraid"
Peter [guest] says, "been a bit busy since then"
SusanneN exclaims, "Got it!"
DaveK says, "I'm not getting it here in China."
Peter [guest] says, "hmmmm...."
SusanneN says, "Too far out, Dave :-)"
Peter [guest] asks, "behind a firewall Dave?"
VanceS says, "That's great peter, lovely family"
DaveK says, "We don't get everything here. The country is behind the Great (fire) Wall."
Peter [guest] says, "lol"
Peter [guest] exclaims, "the Great Fire Wall of China!"
VanceS says, "It's Geocities. that's why webheads is at Homestead"
SusanneN says, "Yes, they'd better take care :-)"
VanceS says, "Geocities is blocked in China"
Peter [guest] asks, "is that right Vance?"
SusanneN asks, "Really?"
Peter [guest] says, "they block Geocities"
Peter [guest] asks, "?"
VanceS says, "But Moral knows proxie servers to get around it."
VanceS says, "That's right."
Peter [guest] asks, "why?"
DaveK says, "I can't get my favorite newspaper here online, the NYT."
Peter [guest] exclaims, "wow!!!!"
VanceS says, "And Tripod. Webheads moved to tripod before eventually winding up at Homestead"
SusanneN says, "I can get NYT"
VanceS exclaims, "All so Chinese folks could be webheads!"
Peter [guest] asks, "can't you surf to it through anonymizer?"
DaveK says, "I'd like to learn some new proxies. The ones I used before eventually got blocked too."
DaveK says, "Yes, anonymizers work until they themselves get blocked."
VanceS says, "That must be one of the proxies"
Juani [guest] says, "I was reading the whole story before he was born..."
Peter [guest] says, "lol"
VanceS says, "We can check Moral's page for a workaround ..."
Peter [guest] says, "there's movies there too...."
Juani [guest] says, "I d say in Spanish"Que hermoso nio""
Peter [guest] exclaims, "but a little sentimental!"
SusanneN says, "Moral sounds pretty healthy"
DaveK has lost his link.
Peter [guest] says, "yo digo lo mismo"
Juani [guest] says, "nio."
SusanneN says, "Oh, poor dave lost his link"
SusanneN . o O ( was he too open mouthed ?) )
Peter [guest] asks, "what does that mean suzanne?"
Juani [guest] says, "oh I forgot there s no "" here"
Peter [guest] asks, "he got cut off?"

SusanneN says, "I was just joking ::-)"
SusanneN says, "Yes he did eventually"
SusanneN exclaims, "Mi maggi!"
JohnSte says, "Hi, Maggi."
maggi [guest] says, "Hi"
Juani [guest] says, "Hi Maggi"
SusanneN says, "I am Susanne from Denmark, nice to meet you here"
maggi [guest] asks, "still there and not in the US Juani?"
Juani [guest] says, "yes, this is my last month here"
