Chat with students Bridgett from Jamaica, Sue from Japan, Ying Lan from Taiwan, Nicia from Brazil, guest Sergei from Minsk - and teachers Vance and Maggi

March 28, 2000

Bridgett in ICQ | Sergei in ICQ | Nicia in ICQ | Ying Lan in ICQ | Maggi in ICQ | Sue and Maggi and Vance in Hearme

I started out pushing my machine to its limits and eventually over the edge. I was running multiple browser window, the Homestead chat, ICQ, Yahoo chat with Sue, the Palace, and the Heame voice chat in addition to running a few other programs such as Word, and was arranging all the windows, when suddenly, Netscape crashed. All the other programs worked, and even the Hearme Voice Presence continued working, so that I could hear the conversation of others in the chat, but I could not respond through Netscape. At first I rebooted thinking I could rejoin with Netscape, but the browser soon crashed again. At this point I just listened to Ying Lan and Maggi and responded to each in ICQ, not sure if I should attempt the Hearme site with Internet Explorer. Finally, at Nicia's prodding, I took the chance, and found myself in the voice chat with two Vances present. Because my machine thought it was Netscape Vance, I heard my own voice with some delay when I talked through my working browser IE. Eventually I managed to shut down Netscape and return to Hearme normally, but by then it was time to go. Still it was a fun evening, even though I felt I was barely able to keep my head above water much of the time.

I was busy working at class time, but I could see Bridgett and Sergei online via ICQ. I rushed to get my work done ...

Eventually Bridgett contacted me on ICQ

nunset 5/28/00 3:44 PM I will check my time for july and tell you in a while, , what is about?

Vance 5/28/00 3:46 PM I'll find you a url in a bit. It's just another conference

Vance 5/28/00 3:47 PM Sergei reports that Sue is in the voice chat, so I guess we should go there

Soon, we saw Nicia come online ...

Vance 5/28/00 4:56 PM Hi Nicia. Maggie, Sue, Ying Lan and I are in voice chat site in case you've got time.

Nima 5/28/00 4:57 PM where is it?

Nima 5/28/00 4:58 PM Tell me where is it... send me the URL, please

Vance 5/28/00 4:58 PM hi. I was trying to get it, but my netscape just crashed.

Vance 5/28/00 4:59 PM Hang on, http://www.netword.com/webheads_voicechat

Nima 5/28/00 4:59 PM oh! Tell Maggi to put me in your ICQ list, or call me now... itīs because Iīm at home..

Vance 5/28/00 5:01 PM ok. My ICQ is working and I can hear them in the voice chat, but Netscape is frozen. I'll ICQ Maggi. Her number is 8595983

Nima 5/28/00 5:01 PM ok, she call me... try with Explorer...

Nima 5/28/00 5:05 PM Did you have the Explorer in your computer? Mabe I need to install the Hearme.com here, because itīs not working....

Vance 5/28/00 5:06 PM Yeah, I was just about to do that. I have a crashed netscape.

Vance 5/28/00 5:16 PM Yeah, I have explorer. I just launched it. The strange thing is the voice client is working perfectly. I can hear them and respond in ICQ. And I can chat with you. But I have no netscape.

Vance 5/28/00 5:57 PM Thanks for trying to join us. We're all having problems with the voice chat but it's new technology and we'll make it work eventually. I did get in later with IE. I wasn't sure what would happen if I did that, and I could hear the chat even with netscape not working, and I could talk to everyone using ICQ. When I did get in with IE, I was in the chat twice, as two Vances, and I could hear my own echo when I spoke in IE. Strange.

That last message was sent offline, since Nicia had left by then. Later she said she was "angry" with her service provider for preventing her joining us.

Ying Lan appeared, as she almost always does ...

Vance can hear Ying Lan talking with Maggi, but he can't respond, so he uses ICQ

Vance 5/28/00 5:03 PM I can hear you fine, but I can't use netscape

Vance 5/28/00 5:04 PM I can hear you fine.

ying 5/28/00 5:04 PM How about IE5?

Vance 5/28/00 5:04 PM Working a lot of windows. Michael has to go to bed early. He emailed excuses. Tell maggi

Vance 5/28/00 5:05 PM I'm trying to launch IE5

Vance 5/28/00 5:08 PM I'm enjoying your conversation. I've got IE running, but I don't know if I should go to the voice chat in IE because I can hear you perfectly talking together.

Vance 5/28/00 5:11 PM Perfectly, it's not a problem really, except I can't chat back in Voice

Vance 5/28/00 5:13 PM I was like a drop of water I think

ying 5/28/00 5:13 PM Is it not a problem? What is?

Vance 5/28/00 5:14 PM This is easier to answer in email. Can you understand what Maggi was saying?

ying 5/28/00 5:14 PM NO. I don't understand it.

Vance 5/28/00 5:16 PM Had been is "past" past. I am a consultant now. I was a teacher before now. Before I was a teacher, I had been a student.

Vance 5/28/00 5:31 PM Because it's not a file already. Yeah, if you're getting that I would appreciate it. I'll have something for the web site at least

MAD 5/28/00 5:33 PM so how do I make it a file?

Vance 5/28/00 5:34 PM You block it off. Then you press ctrl-c to copy. Then you make your text editor active and press ctrl-v to paste it there.
