Meet the people in the chat today
Vance | Maggi | Michael | Ying Lan | John |
USA | Germany | Australia | Taiwan | Puerto Rico |
and our friends Sophie from Cyprus, and Marina and Paolo, both from Italy
This chat started in Hear Me but ended up mainly at the Palace. Ying Lan was first to arrive, but she didn't feel well (something she ate) so she left after a short while. Sophie came along to the Palace, followed by Gio, who was happy to have found us there after previous attempts to meet with us. Vance explained to Gio what the Webheads class was all about and how it met in three places (weekly online chats, the eclass, and its web pages). In the end Vance re-discovered how to make avatars from photographs, and he's now ready to help others make their own avatars as well.

John: I hope so
Vance: ok, continue Ying
Ying: Just want to make sure what I listened.

Ying: How do you teach "Writing"?
Ying: It is Sunday here.
Vance: Do you do any online teaching?
John: Ying, I teach it in a group setting using a lot of writing in the class.
John: My online teaching is all asynchronous at this moment
Ying: asynchronous?
Ying: I can not find the word in my dictionary.
John: To go back to Ying's question. My classes meet three hours a week in a Computer classroom. Asynchronous means we are not on the computer at the same time.
Vance: synchronous means at the same time
Vance: asynchronous, not
Ying: They can not find something inside themselve by surfing internet
Ying: I think "Writing" is an other way to find myself inside. .. my thought.
John: No, only what is outside themselves. It does give them a chance to see other points of view.
Ying: Reading and Writing are synonymous... your point?
John: You learn to write by reading (and also writing about what your read).
Paolo has joined
Ying: More I read, more I write..... that what you want to say,.
John: That is what I mean.
Vance: I think reading and writing are both ways to search inside yourself.

Ying: It is comfortable in Moca?
Marina: Hi everybody
Ying: Very bored?
Vance: very boring
John: Usually, It is nice here. This summer it has been hot, though.

John: Ying, you were asking about my students. They have to take 12 years if English before they get to my class.
Ying: Reading English is not an obstacle for your students.
John: No, but speaking is an obstacle for them.
Ying: Like here. most of students in here.
Marina: Many kisses Mad
John: If you mean in this group, my students are much worse. It seems to be tied to politics.
Ying: politics?
John: Yes. As I said when we were talking before Maggi joined, Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. People who don't want this, generally don't like to learn English.
Ying: Speaking is an obstacle for students in Taiwan.
Ying: People don't want to be a part of USA?
John: My classmates from Taiwan (a few years ago) didn't seem to have much trouble.
Ying: You know... they have to pass TOEFL before they go to USA..
John: Some of them do not want to be part of the USA. Others want to be a state. Still others like it the way it is (but think English would make them become a state).
Ying: But most of students do not got high score in TOEFL.
John: They do not take the TOEFL.
Ying: Really?
John: Really. They take something called the English Placement Test for Hispanics.
Ying: hispanics
John: Spanish Americans
John: Also, most students study in Puerto Rico.

Ying: geezer is bad word to describe people..
Ying: Or it is only a joke.
Ying: geezer is only to describe somebody is olsd?
John: I said that I never know what handsome means. I tell my daughters someone is handsome, they say he is not. I tell them someone is not handome, my daughters say yes he is.

Ying-Lan: Who kiss me?
Mad: just seeing if it works
marina: I made this avatar a few days ago
Vance: I'm looking carefully in there and I can't find it. Cool Marina.
MichaelC: But maybe that's a default .gif - not an avatar.....
marina: In fact I didn't draw it, I just put together different pieces I found in different places
MichaelC: No that's not it...sorry.
Vance: This is nuts. You're very good at it Marina. How did you do it?
marina: I just dropped in certain palaces and I save the pieces
Vance: To make a picture avatar you need a picture 44 pixels by 44 pixels.
MichaelC: But if marina knows what she called this avatar she could search her c drive for it by using find....
Vance: I 'may/ have found it. palace.prp. I'll copy it over.
MichaelC: I'll have a look for this too....
Mad: well...mc...no problems with the Palace?
MichaelC: No Maggie. I did nothin. Just waited a few months and everything's back to normal!
Mad: that's the way
MichaelC: I think the Palace people were aware of the fact that several people were having the same problem as I did and they've fixed the bug.
Vance: We're talking about you in hearme, Michael
Mad: the ads are the pits
MichaelC: Then I'd better go and have a listen!
Mad: you don't want to hear it

Vance: How's this?
marina: Yes, I need a scanner. That's why I didn't send any picture yet
Vance: Ying Lan made one long ago. But yours is two frames, right YL?
Ying-Lan: two frame?
Vance: This one is one frame. If I move it ...
Vance: When you move, what happens?

Vance: I think Michael is doing it.
Vance: There's michael!
