Meet Moral: ICQ Interview with Vance

Moral and Vance met coincidentally on ICQ one day in October, 2000. They had the following chat:

Vance: (2:15 PM) Hi Moral. Just happened to see you on ICQ. How are you today?

Moral: (2:16 PM) Hi Vance! Nice to see you! I just got back from work. And how are you?

Vance: (2:16 PM) Fine. Still at work. Where do you work? How do you get back from there?

Moral: (2:18 PM) I have worked for Leigh Mardon for 5 months, whose headquater is in Australia. And I now go to work and come home on my bike.

Vance: (2:20 PM) What kind of company is Leigh Mardon?

Moral: (2:26 PM) Sorry, just got away for a while. It produces labels for cigarettes. And how do you travel from work to home?

Vance: (2:27 PM) I drive my car. Or I can take a taxi, very cheap.

Vance: (2:27 PM) What is your job at your office?

Moral: (2:29 PM) I am an electric engineer now. I was a computer engineer 5 months ago.

Vance: (2:30 PM) What do you do at work. Do you maintain the equipment?

Moral: (2:31 PM) Yes, Vance. I do that.

Vance: (2:32 PM) Do you have to use English at all in your work?

Vance: (2:33 PM) Do you discuss things with Australian partners?

Moral: (2:36 PM) Yes, I think so. Most of our equipment comes from overseas; for example, France, Switzerland. Their manuals are in English. And sometimes we need engineers from Switzerland, who only can communicate with us in English. By the way, I am upset with my speaking. The General Manager is from Singapore and can speak Chinese.

Vance: (2:38 PM) Do you mean you feel you are not understood well when you speak in English? I guess the General Manager speaks English well. Do others in your company speak English as well as you do?

Moral: (2:41 PM) Yes, Vance. Sometimes I have to write down what I want to say. And yes he can speak English but he just talks to us in Chinese. We have a professional interpreter. I think her English would be better.

Vance: (2:44 PM) Do you manage other technicians or do you have to fix the machines yourself?

Moral: (2:49 PM) There are 8 people in the department of Engineering. We all do maintenance.

Vance: (2:51 PM) I spend a lot of my working day fixing computers and playing with them. Do you enjoy your work? Do you have the most modern equipment? Or are you forced to get the most from outdated equipment?

Moral: (2:55 PM) Yes, I like my work although I got my fingers hurt 20 days ago. And yes, we have the most modern equipment from Bobst Co., Switzerland. Do you remember Tappedin? I tried it but only could use the text mode, because the speed of downloading software is slow. But I think I'll try it again.

Vance: (2:57 PM) I'm trying to upload graphics to my office at tapped in. I just got people to help me with the code I need. I'll let you know when it is ready.

Moral: (3:01 PM) Ok, I'll let you know when I make progress at it. It is just difficult to use text mode with gmud. I expect some speaking tutorials from you with Voxphone when you have time. Well, I've got to have dinner. Maybe I'll see you soon?

Vance: (3:02 PM) OK, would you like for me to put this interview on your web page?

Moral: (3:03 PM) Yes, of course. I'll tell you next time I change my job. See you later Vance!

Vance: (3:07 PM) OK, catch you later
