Hi all,

Todays Sunday class in tapped IN was interesing for several reaosns, as far as I can tell from the half hour I was with you. Really this was an interesting incident, when it came up that Claire (who already considered herself a true Webhead), suddenly discovered that we also have mail lists! And the improvised voting and welcoming ceremonial was running with a kind and true enthusiasm. Then, there was a quest from Michael to join him for a short Yahoo Vioce presentation this Tuesday at 4.30 GMT (I think it was).

And most important, we started a brief brainstorming on Vance's request for sharing our community forming experiences in the upcoming EVONline seminar.

Rif brought up a good question, is the e-library part of a learning community?, And someone replied that it depdends on whether this particular community is using the e-library. Well, this might be an excellent mind teaser: How do we decide what kind of artifacts are part or not of something that is going on, virtually, among people who meet online. Are our computers part of this? In casu a real life classroom, one would say yes. In a real life environment, we might have furniture, maps and boards om the walls, a clock we could all refer to, or a computer lab, and library etc. Even the café or the toilets would be part of this, as informal meeting places. But, now that we're located in a distributed world, apart from each other, things do get less tangible and not so easy to distingush.

We are experiencing how stuff works, in a kind of safe and supportive, scaffolding environment. Thus, our memes are dispersed - that is, the more often an idea is taken up and communicated, the faster the idea travel and maybe recycle in a new connection. We are sharing our minds, in many ways. And a lot of the stuff we refer to, as more or less digested and internalised information, is actually written somewhere, in books or papers, or even easier in our community context, located on the web, and can be shared instantly by URL projections. But then what do you think about Michael's bookshelf in Australia, or Chris' heaps of papers to be read on his desktop in Germany? Wghat would I do without all my dictionaries to look up new words, or words used in surprising connections? Or to find out how to express something that I could say in Danish but miss the words in English? Are those artifacts, in case they're used for the purpose of our needs, possibly some kind of peripheral extension we can refer to? But eventually, all those possible community tools and environments we have been checking out , should be considered as very important artifacts, or vehicles to bring us together. Even if we do not all use the same kind of computer lab, or need as many test drives or checking new vocabulary, some of us do. Some of you even stay lurking on this mail list, without meeting in the live chat sessions, or just posting a few words from time to time. Are those silent readers in the periphery still part of the community; I think so.

And, back to Rif's question about the e-library, I should say, in case our computers and the tools we use make it possible for us to communicate, books and papers and dictionaries, as well as e-libraries, would be part of the whole complex, too. Even those virtual cups of coffee, bagels with salmon and cream cheese, and caipirinhas should be counted in. Or is this just too chaotic to put like this? Far out?
