JohnSte [webhead] says, "Vacation went very well."

Eileen [guest] says, "I'm meeting a friend here at 1:00 (GMT), for a chat for language teachers."

Eileen [guest] says, "I've noticed! Thanks."

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "click on DETACH in the middle right of your screen to make the text window larger"

Eileen [guest] asks, "Well, I think I'm browse around. I guess I just click on names of places?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "And then resize it as you would any window."

Eileen [guest] says, "thank you for the tip"

Eileen [guest] says, "ok"

BJB [to Eileen [guest]]: "there is a group of ESL/EFL teachers and learners meeting here now, also"

Eileen [guest] asks, "here, where, right here in this chat?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "Here in reception."

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "yep...the Webheads meet here every Sunday at noon GMT"

Eileen [guest] says, "maybe my friend got the time wrong"

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "and then Phil Benz's session is later today"

Eileen [guest] asks, "Hmmm. Is this reception?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "Yep."

BJB . o O ( so your friend was correct. Where are you located, Eileen? )

Eileen [guest] asks, "Where are you located?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "I'm located on my living room sofa in Moca, Puerto Rico."

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "I'm in Pennsylvania"

Eileen [guest] exclaims, "Ha ha ha! That's GREAT!"

Eileen [guest] exclaims, "That's nice. I haven't been back to the states in 6 years!"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "I was in Pennsylvania until a few weeks ago."

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "TAPPED IN has an international membership of over 14,000"

Eileen [guest] asks, "Am I chatting with three people?"

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "just two, Eileen...John and me."

Eileen [guest] says, "Ok, thanks, just feels like three (ha ha)"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "sorry - two."

BJB [Helpdesk] chuckles

Eileen [guest] asks, "all right, I think I'll go for a spin. Do you "work" here, or are you a pseer-by like myself?"

Eileen [guest] says, "that was "passer-by""

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "you are welcome to explore the TAPPED IN environment..."

JohnSte [webhead] says, "I'm a member, but I don't work here."

Right now, he is wearing Academic Regalia. He has just finished his doctoral dissertation and obtained a PhD in Webheading. email: prof@jhsteele.com WWW: http://www.eslpalace.com

BJB . o O ( I like hints :-) )

JohnSte [webhead] says, "Thank you."

ClaireB asks, "So isn't it time for the Webheads?"

Eileen [guest] says, "I will check out your website. I have a little site I have as a hobby, all in Spanish: http://www.123celebremos.com"

BJB [to Claire]: "can you please introduce yourself to Eileen?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "I'll be changing my icon soon. I have a hilarious one."

Eileen [guest] asks, "I said hello to Claire. Do you mean tell you more about myself?"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "According to my watch it it, Claire."

Eileen [guest] asks, "Are you wearing icons I can't see?"

BJB [to Eileen [guest]]: "do you see WHO'S HERE in the upper right of your screen?"

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "our icons are there. You can find out more about us by clicking on the icons"

Eileen [guest] says, "Oh, now I do, I had this chat maximized"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "An icon is a picture you put on the page to represent you. I have a picture of myself about to go up the sears tower."

ClaireB says, "Oh, sorry I missed the part about introducing myself. I'm a language lab director in Pittsburgh"

Eileen [guest] leaves for the CAFE.

ClaireB says, "yes, warm indeed"

Eileen [guest] says, "Well, I ran around looking for you, feeling all the desks and walls, hoping to bump into you"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "I was working on my proposal back then."

JohnSte [webhead] asks, "Elyse, What is your proposal about?"

Eileen [guest] says, "Elyse, how do you whisper? I feel like the typical new person who annoys everyone"

BJB [Helpdesk] says, "you can go to the cafe or the ASO for a private conversation, Elyse and Eileen"

BJB [to Eileen [guest]]: "we all started out as newbies here! We learned by asking the same questions :-)"

BJB [Helpdesk] nods solemnly to John...same here

Eileen [guest] exclaims, "Oops, thought that got erased! SORRY!"

JohnSte [webhead] says, "(or wait until someone else does, and then copy the answer)."

BJB [Helpdesk] chuckles...that also works, John.

JohnSte [webhead] asks, "How long are we supposed to wait for the teacher?"

Eileen [guest] says, "elyse /wh let's see"

SusanneN says, "They had made a special assignment on forty pages, and the oral presentation was a performance, dre3ssed up as Gandalf, an ork and an elf"

SusanneN says, "Yes"

NigelC . o O ( magnificent moment for someone to arrive mid-conversation! )

SusanneN says, "They were so welll disguised , painted bodies and whigs"

SusanneN says, "They had made a series of photos and a video , too"

You hear a quiet popping sound; SRI_64 [guest] has lost its link.

NigelC exclaims, "kind of hard to assess them if you can't recognize who's who?!!"

SusanneN exclaims, "It was really a change from all the more theoretical presentations!"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "sounds right up your alley Nigel, thespian"

NigelC exclaims, "Sort of!"

SusanneN says, "I was in no doubt who was who, for sure. Their teacher was the drama teacher, and she was pretty proud of them, too"

NigelC says, "I'm now teaching ESL more or less full time here at Penn"

NigelC exclaims, "Much more work than studying ever was!"

SusanneN says, "They had made a hypothesis that live role play would appeal to Gardners multiple intelligences"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "more or less full time? Is this a no benefits assignment?"

NigelC says, "now that's right up my street! did a couple of presentations on MI"

SusanneN says, "And illustrated this idea with very good situation pictures"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "what is multiple intelligences?"

You hear a quiet popping sound; MarybethH has disconnected.

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "We had that question on our list"

NigelC says, "yes, Vance. I'm officially a part time instructor - no benefits, no job security ..."

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "Dafne answered it ..."

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "are you looking for a permanent job Nigel?"

NigelC exclaims, "Sure!"

NigelC says, "Problem is they're hard to find"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "lots of jobs here in the Middle East"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "(sorry just took a phone call)"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "Where are you hoping to work?"

SusanneN says, "I hope to find a job sooner or later, too..."

SusanneN says, "but I would like to stay wher I live"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] answers own question at http://www.aenc.org/KE-Intelligences.html

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "AENC agrees with many observers and the key proponent of Multiple Intelligences, Howard Gardner, who have noted that students possess an array of skills and can be highly talented in at least seven distinct areas of mental activity. Such observations have been consolidated into Gardner's "Multiple Intelligences" theory, displayed below in a pie chart: (Please click on an intelligence slice to learn more about each of the seven key intelligences.)"

SusanneN says, "Actually, I do have a job interview next week."

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "Now, who can name the 7 types of intelligence?"

SusanneN exclaims, "Oh dear!"

SusanneN says, "Spatial, logical, linguistic, musical, interpersonal intrapersonal, etc"

SusanneN says, "Gardner found a few more later"

PhilB has arrived.

R2 follows PhilB to here.

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "Bonjour, y'all."

SusanneN says, "I can show you an iknteresting link, fo Harvard"

SusanneN exclaims, "Hi Phil!"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "bodily kinesthetic"

PhilB [WebTeach] smiles at Susanne.

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "good"

SusanneN says, "Gardner is teaching at Harvard school of education, and so is his colleague Chris Dede"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "marhaba phil"

SusanneN says, "Chris often brings in his classes to tapped IN"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "ahh, of Webquest fame, that one?"

SusanneN asks, "CAN I project an interesting page?"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "no Bernie Dogde of Webquest fame"

PhilB [WebTeach] asks, "Fame??"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "yes please do Susanne"

SusanneN projects the URL: http://www.provost.harvard.edu/factech01/video.html

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "Christopher Ded and Gardner we're talking about"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "Dede"

SusanneN says, "Yes, they were both presenting at this workshop..."

SusanneN says, "I have not looked at tghe video yet"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "looking at it now"

You hear a quiet popping sound; NigelC has lost his link.

SusanneN says, "In his classes about online learning, Chris Dede often uses the idea of multiple intelligences to support why we should use different communication channels"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "makes sense, different modalities"

PhilB [WebTeach] sighs, hearing about "multiple intelligences yet again.

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "We language teachers have stressed using varied techniques since long before the multiple intelligences fad."

SusanneN asks, "Yes, I do know that you're not so fond of that, Phil. Why is that so?"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "yes, true"

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "It's a catchword with a few obvious applications and very little real substance."

SusanneN says, "Oh yes, there's nothing really new in it, just the fact that so many people have started to listen to the ide"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "funny I was not aware of the buzzword till just recently"

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "After all, once you've allowed that students make use of different "forms" of intelligence to different degrees at different times, you can't really go any further."

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "Since it is not possible to ascertain which of the posited forms of intelligence a given student might be more proficient at, even if this proposition were verifiable."

SusanneN says, "I do not agree about the lack of substance. I do find that there is both research evidence and practical examples supporting that this way of putting things can help change a stiffened system from being diminated by a preference of logical exactitude towards a more differentiated view of the student as a person"

SusanneN says, "I wonder why you would have to ascertain that, just make sure that your teaching has multiple ways of helping students learn in their preferred style"

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "IMHO, that is the only potential benefit of the concept. In many circles, the need for "differentiated teaching" has been recognized at least for decades."

SusanneN says, "Boring theoretical lectures would not help those who need to get their hands on"

SusanneN says, "Old wine on new bottles :-)"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "I'm watching Chris Dede i guess pontificate on the subject"

PhilB . o O ( back )

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "this is very interesting"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "I'm going to have to watch it tomorrow though"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "thanks for projecting it"

SusanneN says, "I did not run the video yet - but it seem to me that his students get the idea integrated in their work. I had the opportunity to be his helpdesk last year in some of his classes,"

PhilB [WebTeach] asks, "Susanne, will we see you for theory night on Tuesday?"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "yeah, good concept here"

SusanneN exclaims, "Phil, I will!"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "I've got to run, got a diving class in 45 min"

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "Perhaps you can expose some of your ideas on MI. <g>"

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "OK, great, I've got to run too."

PhilB [WebTeach] says, "Ciao, y'all."

You hear a quiet popping sound; PhilB [WebTeach] has disconnected.

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "got to run home and grab my bathing suit"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] asks, "ideas on MI?"

SusanneN says, "Bye, I will"

VanceS . o O ( expose ideas on MI ... what is that about? )

SusanneN says, "Yes, the theory go wqell with the idea of the post constructivist school, I THINK"

SusanneN says, "MI is multiple intelligences"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "oh, multiple intelligences"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "yeah, finally came to me"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "ok, got to run"

VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] says, "nice to see you"

SusanneN asks, "Phil, what was the name of the presen ter on Tuesday?"

You hear a quiet popping sound; VanceS [Just back from Al Ain] has disconnected.
