Homework Assignments

in the PI Foundation Computing Course 032

How important is this? Homework is part of your Continuous Assessment grade in this course. Continuous Assessment counts for 35% of your course grade. Click here to see more about your homework in general

Your teacher encourages you to complete your assignments by their due date and then keep working to improve them afterwards. This will help you learn more and will increase your mark on any assignements you improve. If you have questions about when your assignment will be evaluated, please ask Vance. Please note that in order to be evaluated, the assignment must be submitted. Usually this means placed in the Work Finished' folder.

Mon Dec 22 DUE: Sat Dec 27 We will
  1. start on Power Point and (2)
  2. go over your project assignments. The first step of the project was to write its topic in your blogs (assigned Dec 13).

Now your assignment is to write more in your blog about this assignment. Your teacher is looking for evidence of thought, reflection, and effort on your project (a few words or one sentence are not evidence of thought or effort). For Sat Dec 27, your blog should give:

  1. The topic of your research
  2. A paragraph (3 or 4 sentences) describing what aspect(s) of the topic you are going to research. In this description you will narrow the focus of your research from a general topic idea to specific information you will be looking for on the Internet. (As you actually find information you might want to later adjust the focus of your topic.)
  3. Links to web sites you are considering for evaluation

Sat Dec 20 DUE: End of period Sat Dec 20 In class Wed, we will start on Evaluating Websites, based on the TinyURLs students found in "Searching the World Wide Web Part 2". Pairs of students evaluate the websites on a given topic (pumping oil, learning PowerPoint, solving math problems, Internet library for students). Each student team will prepare on Saturday an evaluation score for each website in the topic area based on the criteria questions here.. Students will present findings to the class on Monday Dec 22, indicating the best and worst sites in the group.
Sat Dec 13 DUE: Tue Dec 16

You also need to write in your blog what you want to do for your term project. The project will be to evaluate web sites for the quality of information they provide on your topic. Your results will appear in a class eZine (more information about the eZine here). You will also hand in 1 or 2 page Word document reporting your findings in a table, with header and footer and other attributes to be explained later. For now you must write in your blog what topic you are interested in for the web search, and how you plan to contribute to the eZine presentation. Vance will check blogs after. Tuesday Dec 16. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Excercise 3 asks you to compare two web sites. You can't do this because one of the sites is not available. So instead please evaluate the site you can access according to the criteria questions here.. Write your evaluation in the space for comparison on p. 3.
