¡@ Aina's House

bk21.gif (3898 bytes)<< I stood on a rock and looked down at this small fishing village by the sea.

I climbed the rock-hill behind the house to ramble around the house, there was nothing to do but enjoy the views. I breathed deeply to smell the air from the North Pole. I have never felt so close the wild land before. I stood there with the sea birds for a long time. The rain stopped. Occasionally someone came to the fishing village and from time to time someone left.

I saw May came up to where I was standing from the end of the road. She had got up earlier than I. She felt she should walk around the whole fishing village. She used to explore each new place every morning to look for some birds and animals, which were different from those in Taiwan. ¡§Something new?¡¨ I asked. She told me about her morning adventure.

We did not see Emiko and Petri until we ate breakfast in the dining room.

There was bread, jam, butter, small quantities of meat, tea, coffee and juice¡K anything you wanted to eat ¡K they were already on the dining table.                          Petri/ Ying Lan/ May

¡§Good morning!¡¨ the hostess said. She was a kind lady with a ready smile. An old man was there as well. ¡§This is my father¡¨ she said, ¡§He doesn¡¦t speak English. He is a fisherman.¡¨ I remembered him from the night before. He was old, but with a strong enough body to lift up my luggage with one hand. ¡§Aina¡¨ he pointed his daughter. ¡§Your name?¡¨ The hostess nodded her head. We met the whole family during breakfast time.

Aina with her family

After breakfast, Michelle and May discussed where to go and when to leave?

The host of the family gave us some advice.

¡§But you have to go to Nordkap first.¡¨ ¡§Nordkap?¡¨ I was confused.

Michelle told me we were at Kamoyv3r. It was 20 km from there to Nordkap.

¡§But we bought tickets to Nordkap.¡¨ ¡§According to Petri¡¦s timetable, we have to stay here one more night. Petril will go to Nordkap this evening and then he will return to Rovaniemi.¡¨                         host/May/Michelle

¡§Maybe we will choose another bus to go to Nordkap at noon and leave here in the afternoon.¡¨ Michelle said.

I had hoped to stay there more time. But¡K.

¡§Is it a good business?¡¨ I asked the host when I paid the bill with my Visa Card.

¡§It is a family business for my wife not for me. The house belongs to my wife and her Dad. I just come here to help her on my vacation. My wife is the owner. The inn only opens three months a year form June to August.

It is very cold here in winter, we have to live in another place for the rest of the year. It is warmer there than here.¡¨ He replied. ¡§How about Grandpa?¡¨ ¡§He lives here. He is a fisherman.¡¨ ¡§Does he fish in winter? The water will be ice in winter.¡¨ ¡§He can go fish in winter. You know the warm stream will bring schools of fish and keep the water from becoming ice.¡¨ ¡§Is it only worthwhile to operate the inn for three months in a year?¡¨ ¡§Tourists only come here from June to August.¡¨

¡§Nordkap will be closed in September. It is very cold here. In winter, there is nothing except snow. You came here late, no midnight sun now. If you are lucky you will see the beautiful clouds at sunset. But it is rainy today. ¡¨

¡§The best time to visit here is in June. During June, the charge for each bed is more than 200 Kroner. The price is different in different months. The house was rebuilt three years ago. Over 30 persons can stay at my house at the same time. ¡¨ Aina said.

¡§My father asked you to go to fishing with him?¡¨ ¡§You can go fishing on his boat.¡¨

That¡¦s great! ¡§My father will take care of you, it is safe. My husband will go with you.¡¨

Michelle, May and I cheered the idea. We packed our luggage first and then waited to go fishing by boat. I looked for Emiko and asked her to go fishing with us. She had been unhappy to be in her room alone. After I told her about the new idea, she smiled again.

While we were waiting for Grandpa, May and Emiko rode a bike for fun.

Petri appeared outside and wanted to go fishing with us.

¡§Was he attracted by a Mermaid?¡¨ May said.

¡§Where is the Mermaid?¡¨ I asked. May giggled.bk41.gif (2358 bytes)>>
