Chat with students, Sue in Japan, Ying Lan from Taiwan, Sorsah from Vietnam, and Moral from China - and teachers Vance and Peter from Tokyo

July 16, 2000

I went on line at around 11:30 GMT. In homestead, someone appeared but disappeared without leaving a message (I wasn't watching my computer that closely).

You can jump to the various parts of this file from here:

A few minutes later I found Sue on Yahoo Messenger. Here's how it went:

vance_stevens: Hi

mysailing: hi, vance.

vance_stevens: How are your driving lessons going?

mysailing: well, well, not so bad. I have a middle test tomorrow early moring, if i could pass it i could drive on the road with one person sitting beside me[

vance_stevens: Is this the usual procedure for everyone in Japan who wants a license?

mysailing: yes,

vance_stevens: You say it takes two weeks? Can the person with you be any licensed driver?

mysailing: He or she must have more than 3 years driving experience

vance_stevens: I think it's about the same in America if you are learning for the first time. In the UAE the process is very long and unfair I think.

mysailing: It would take me over 2 months, i am sure

vance_stevens: Why do you want to drive? Do you need to? Do you plan to buy a car?

mysailing: here is countryside, without car, i can not move at all

vance_stevens: Yeah, how do you get to work?

mysailing: i go to driving school after work

vance_stevens: but if you can't move, how do you get to work? And to driving school? And back home?

mysailing: by bus of company

vance_stevens: How long is your bus ride in the morning?

mysailing: 15 minutes

vance_stevens: that's short. It's nice to work near where you live. Ying Lan is in the voice chat

mysailing: sorry, i am talking with a friend now

vance_stevens: ok, I'm talking to Ying Lan. Join us if you like.

mysailing: ok

About this time, Ying Lan appeared on HearMe. She had sent me a real media file recording earlier of her reading of Appointment in Samarra. She asked me to check her pronunciation. So I played the recording and then pronounced the words she needed help with for her, and she repeated them. One word she had difficulty with was "threatening", and I helped her with "threat" and "threaten" to lead up to "threatening."

Here's what the screen looked like.

Vance: Where do we get Voxphone?

Moral: www.voxphone.com

Ying-Lan: Is it a free shareware?

Moral: a shareware... but you can use its basic functions even after trial period.

Ying-Lan: Vance probably is busy to download the Voxphone.

Ying-Lan: Have you read the e-mail that I was talking about a magicspell?

Moral: Not yet. But I read about fate - a good piece.

Ying-Lan: I like to read those brief stories.

Moral: It's very helpful.

Moral: for learning language and life.

Vance: You're right. Thats what I was doing

Vance: Yeah, I want to download MagicSpell as well.

Moral: Please tell me when you make it Vance. I'll call you.

Vance: OK, so I should get the full voxphone gold?

Ying-Lan: It is a magic software... A etoy, he can speak English by himself. I means the software.

Moral: I use V3.0. But it works with Gold version very well.

Ying-Lan: Moral, you always talk to people online by Voxphone.

Moral: Interesting. Maybe I'll download it.

Ying-Lan: To speak English...

Moral: Yes Ying and in Chinese mostly.

Ying-Lan: Yes... it is very interesting.

Moral: Would download it?

Moral: would you...

Ying-Lan: I downoladed it in this afternoon.

Vance: I had to fill out a form. That's why I was away.

Ying-Lan: Actually, I spent all day on line.

Moral: You mean you downloaded Voxphone Ying?

Ying-Lan: I bought a book ( To learn English on line) and a magazine ( "Download") ... So.. I followed their instructions to visit those sites.

Ying-Lan: I was surprised when I installed the MagicSpell.

Vance: It's great with so many webheads to share all this information

Ying-Lan: He could read it.

Ying-Lan: I wrote the email to tell webheads to download the magicspell.

Moral: Interesting. I'll try it.

Ying-Lan: Vance maybe you need to write How to install it .

Moral: May I have your ICQ number Yinglan?

Vance: To explain you mean? Why don't you write it. It will be good practice for you.

Vance: Was it difficult to install?

Ying-Lan: When I installed the Mspell4ICQ.exe, after pressed the finished buttom. There was a box .. I had to select "select site to download" then prssed "next" buttom to download somthing... i

Vance: Well, I'll see when I try it.

Ying-Lan: But the first time I seclected "Install speech input" and "select site to download". ... it took 30 minutes but it failed.

Ying-Lan: You don

Ying-Lan: Only seclect "Select site to download" then press "next" buttom.

Vance: ok ... we'll save these logs and use the instructions you are writing here.

Ying-Lan: I hope it is useful.

Vance: I found out about some interesting software today. http://www.adsubtract.com

Vance: it's supposed to get rid of banner ads and give you control over cookies

Ying-Lan: What is it?

Vance: I downloaded it but haven't installed it.

Moral: How is Hearme?

Ying-Lan: Fine.

Vance: I have a really annoying banner ad with my version of the palace

Ying-Lan: You can hear eveyone speaking.

Ying-Lan: annoying banner?

Vance: You never explained your problem, Moral, with HearMe.

Vance: A banner is like a flag. So a banner ad (advertisement) is one that pops up and is long, like a banner.

Ying-Lan: Yes.. it is .

Moral: I have a banner on the Palace too...

Ying-Lan: I deleted them.

Vance: Yeah, how did you delete it? This one keeps coming back.

Ying-Lan: I hate those banners to distrub me.

Ying-Lan: I forgot.

Moral: I talk about my problem Vance.

Moral: talked...

Moral: the banner wasters the band width...

Moral: wastes...

Vance: Moral: i can't use voice features. This?

Moral: Who else in Hearme?

Ying-Lan: Only Vance and me.

Ying-Lan: But we are hear to talk to you.

Vance: Just Ying Lan and I right now. Sue is on Yahoo messenger but she's talking to someone else.

Ying-Lan: Nobody coming.

Ying-Lan: Why sue is on Yahoo>

Moral: I know. so we can be here.

Vance: Lately people have been coming late.

Ying-Lan: I was alone in the chat room of Yahoo.

Ying-Lan: Nobody wanted to talk to me... sad.

Ying-Lan: I almost forgot the yahoo chat room.

Ying-Lan: the password and user name.

Moral: Does Hearme need something like DirectX... I use Windows 95.

Vance: This is Yahoo messenger. You get it at http://www.yahoo.com and you search for the messenger, and download it.

Ying-Lan: I don't know.. I use window 98.

Moral: And Vance?

Ying-Lan: Do I have to download the softwear of Yahoo messenger?

Vance: I'm not sure either. I think it just needs a 4.0 or better browser

Vance: If you want to use messenger you have to download it.

Moral: I use IE 5.0.

Ying-Lan: IE5 is o.k. .

Ying-Lan: I use IE 5 , too.

Ying-Lan: What are you doing?

Ying-Lan: To busy to meet someone through internet?

Moral: Me? Surfing.

Vance: I just gave Sue the url for the Palace software. Maybe she can join us.

Moral: She has to download the software. I takes time.

Ying-Lan: She has to download the Palace before she join us. ... it takes a long time to download it.

Moral: It takes time.

Ying-Lan: I don't like to download the program at night.

Moral: Why?

Ying-Lan: I always download the progam on Sunday morning.

Vance: It doesn't take too long. Others have made it here after downloading during class.

Ying-Lan: I get up early to download it. It is quick and fast.

Moral: So is it in nights. I often surf too late.

Ying-Lan: Sunday morning.. it is my working time.

Ying-Lan: But it is very slow when you download something at night.

Ying-Lan: You should try to download programs in Sunday morning....

Moral: It's faste...at 2 or 3 am.

Ying-Lan: Ohh... you don't need to sleep..

Ying-Lan: It is bad to your health...

Moral: In weekends...

Ying-Lan: Have you heard the Napster?

Vance: Sue is downloading now

Ying-Lan: It is the hottest program on line... to download mp3..by Nepster.

Moral: I just have the softwares downloaded and watch TV...

Vance: Do you use Napster?

Ying-Lan: Watch TV on line?

Moral: Oh, Nice! the url please Ying?

Moral: No...regular TV. just let the computer works.

Vance: I don't think I'd like other people having access to my computer.

Ying-Lan: NO. Vance. I just read the magazine talking about Napster..

Ying-Lan: I downloaded it from web site in Taiwan.

Vance: It's popular, but it lets other people get stuff from your computer.

Moral: Neither I.

Ying-Lan: Really...???

Vance: "nor I"

Moral: Sorry, nor I...

Ying-Lan: When I use Napster, Like I open the gate of my computer, and let people acess my file.

Moral: But they can't do it if I don't have hack program in my PC.

Ying-Lan: Is it correct?

Moral: Napster lets other access your computer?

Ying-Lan: I have no idea about that.. I just read Vance's words. I guess it.

Ying-Lan: Vance probably is busy on his wrok.

Vance: Just moving between chats.

Moral: I know...

Moral: Any luck with your Voxphone download?

Vance: Napster lets you download music from other people's computers, and lets other people get it from yours.

Vance: It keeps a database of what music is where and directs traffic among all the computers.

Moral: Sounds like a hack software.

Ying-Lan: Sue is coming our voice chat room.

Vance: Sue is 60% through downloading the Palace. She told us that in the voice chat.

Ying-Lan: Do you work tomorrow?Moral.

Ying-Lan: I heard 46%

Ying-Lan: I like to travel alone by myself.

Ying-Lan: It is not good to travel China by single woman.

Vance: The Taiwan people I've seen have been traveling in tour groups.

Moral: No, I don't think so Yinglan. As a matter a fact, Taiwan people are paid much respect in mainland.

Ying-Lan: A lot of people go to travel in China mainland.

Moral: they have a lot of priotities.

Moral: China mainland will be your good place to visit Yinglan. No language problems...

Vance: I got that but I don't want to install right now because I'm running too many programs

Vance: On the other hand, it's about time to go, so maybe I can risk it.

Vance: I like Hot Metal Pro 6

Vance: Word 97 is also good, but not Word 2000
