Chat with Webheads students Sue in Japan, Ying Lan and Ming from Taiwan, Paolo from Italy, Moral from China, Gloria from Paraguay,
student guests Amer from Turkey, Ng, and Bora from Korea,
and teaching guests Kevin, Steve and Robert,
and Webheads teachers Vance, Michael, and Maggi

June 11, 2000

This was a practice session for our chat Sunday July 2 from Barcelona.  There was a little confusion with the voice chat clients: Michael’s in Australia worked well, but the one at Geocities didn’t connect with other chatters, so each arrival was there by him/herself.  Those of us who were in touch by other means worked out what the problems were and ended up at the Australian site.  Meanwhile the Homestead text chat applet was playing up as well and causing some frustration, though I was able to get it by switching browsers. In any event, several webheads students turned out, as well as a few invited guests.

<Anonymous3742> Vance, do you do any work with videoconferencing(vc)?

<Vance> We'll miss then. To change name, type it in name, then click Change

<Anonymous3742> Hi Ying

<Ying> See the columns on the screen.

Anonymous3742 is now known as Robert.

<Ying> Name change

<Vance> Well, I dabble in it or try to.

<Robert> thats better

<Ying> much better

<Robert> I use it for tandem exchanges

<Robert> Vance: Where are you based? Middle east?

<Vance> Well, Robert, do you know Geoff Jordan?

<Robert> I've seen him at conferences

<Vance> I'm in the Middle East and Ying Lan is in Taiwan

<Robert> An on-liner student? How does that work?

<Vance> And Ying, thanks for turning up! I couldn't get the applet to run in netscape

<Vance> You can meet Ying at http://www.netword.com/webheads

<Robert> You were expecting more people this morning, I suppose

<Ying> it is ok

<Robert> Sunday morning mightn't be a good time for many

<Ying> I do not meet Vance in the real world.

<Vance> Maggi just appeared on ICQ. I'm in 3 other chat places but no one else at the moment

<Ying> Vance are you in UAE now? or in Spain?

<Robert> Anyway, nice to talk to you, Got to go, best of luck to you all

<Ying> What a pitty!

Robert has left the chat room.

<Vance> OK, Robert, no time for voice chat?

<Ying> Like wind comes and goes.

<Ying> He

<Ying> s gone

<Ying> what is "tandem exchange"?

<Maggi> tandem means going on at the same time

<Vance> I'm not sure. Do you know maggi? Robert said he was doing tandem exchange video conferencing

<Maggi> why not ask him

<Ying> He's gone

<Vance> like the wind

Anonymous6043 has joined the chat room.

<Vance> Hi there

<Maggi> maybe it means two conferences going on parellel...

<Maggi> parallel

<Vance> Maybe we can ask our new guest

Anonymous6043 is now known as Steve.

<Ying> hi , Steve

<Maggi> Hi Steve..

<Steve> Hi

<Vance> Hi steve. I guess we're just getting started here.

<Vance> With you now are Maggi and Vance, teachers

<Vance> and Ying Lan, one of our students, online

<Steve> Yeah, just getting used to GMT

<Vance> Where are you?

<Steve> Taipei, Taiwan

<Ying> It is great to meet some one who is from the same country as me.

<Ying> I am Taiwanses, are you?

<Steve> Taiwan Min Gwo, Wan Swei

<Ying> what's that?

<Vance> uh oh

<Steve> I am an American who was raised in Taiwan

<Vance> I guess you didn't get the tones right there

<Steve> I coined a phrase

<Ying> You speak both English and Chinses.. or

<Steve> Mandarin fluent, Cantonese good, Taiwanese lousy

<Ying> Are you a teacher here?

<Steve> Yes, but I am leaving after one year

<Ying> You are a languge talent..

<Ying> Because of the visa?

<Steve> The Taiwanese educational system is still too traditional for me

<Steve> The same as it was 30+ years ago when I first came

<Ying> That's too bad!!!

<Ying> But we have new goverment now... do you think it won't be change anything?

<Ying> So Steve.. which school do you teach?

<Steve> My wife supported the new prez...there will be change...change is good!!

<MichaelC> Hi everyone.

<Vance> HI there Michael. Netscape?

<Maggi> Hi mc...

<Steve> Hi Michael

<MichaelC> Vance - I'm here in Netscape.

<Vance> Michael is another teacher, Steve. We're 3 teachers in the Webheads class

<Steve> Netscape's the best

<Ying> University.. my cousin graduated from Ming Chuan University.

<Vance> It's giving me some problems at the moment

<Steve> Lucky folks, Vance is the expert

<Vance> Who me? Oh, you mean the other Vance ...

<MichaelC> And me too. I hate to admit it but at the moment IE is more reliable for plug ins.

<Ying> Her English is pretty good.. (My cousin)

<Steve> What did your cousin major in?

<Ying> Secretary...

<Vance> Ying Lan's English is pretty good!

<Steve> Yeah, Ying Lan where are you?

<Ying> I live at Feng Yuan, which is small town near Taichung city.

<Ying> Vance... You admire me..

<MichaelC> (smiles)

<Vance> Yes, I admire your persistence with the language

<Steve> I am familiar with it...I used to be a prof at Tunhai..you guys got hit hard with 9/21 quake

<Ying> Yes.. any a supper shock .. another earthquake last night.

<Ying> another a super shock

<Steve> I felt it

<MichaelC> They sure did. We were out of contact with Ying for about 5 days and we were all quite worried. Another one last night?

<Vance> Really? Last night?

<Ying> I was awake and found that earthquake came again...

<Maggi> They had quakes agai in Turkey just before

<Maggi> just like last time

<Steve> Vance, Michael, Ying...any recommendations for a chat site I can use with students. I have Delphi Forums linked on my web site

<Ying> My mother called me .... Runing out of the house.

<Ying> Delphi Forums?

<MichaelC> Well I think we'd agree that Hearme voice presence is the best because you have the choice of voice or text chat.

<Steve> Yeah, it was one of the first to offer online forums...thorough, but not the most user-friendly (IMHO)

<Vance> I was just checking out tappedin.org last night. It was great. I was impressed.

<Maggi> anybody ever been to taqpped-in?

<Steve> You can check it out at my web site-- www.schackne.com

<Maggi> oops...Tapped-In

<Vance> snap

<Vance> Hey Steve, would you like to try the voice chat?

Steve has left the chat room.

<Vance> Oops, scared another one off

<Vance> Hi Steve, I was just asking if you'd like to try the voice chat

<MichaelC> Bacik in a minute...

<Maggi> virtual roulette here

<Steve> Sorry, I was just disconnected...another reason I'm leaving Taiwan, Ying

<Steve> My sound card doesn't support it, believe it or not

<Maggi> well...she got discnnected right b3ehiund you

<Vance> OK, then we can chat here. Ming just appeared there in voice. But I think she's coming here.

Anonymous14 has joined the chat room.

<Vance> This must be Ming. Hi.

<Ying> But you have been living for over 30 years... Stev?

<Anonymous14> here!

Anonymous14 is now known as Ming.

<Ying> HI Ming

<Vance> Yep

<Steve> Weird stuff, Vance. My computer supports midi and wave stuff, but not REAL AUDIO

<Ming> um.

<Maggi> Ying and I are at mc's site

<Vance> Hearme is not real audio but it is a plugin

<Maggi> Hi Ming

<Ming> hello~ Maggi

<MichaelC> I'm back again...Hi Ming.

<Ying> I open three windows now.

<Steve> I afraid to leave this window

<Vance> If you visit Michael's site now you get the voice chat and you can go from there to homestead

<Maggi> the 3rd on Ying?

<Vance> Don't worry Steve. We do this every week.

<Ming> Hello~MC, lon time no see.

<Vance> Ming, did you hear us in the voice chat?

<Steve> Have any of guys, gals checked out the Connectrix "fisheye" clip on camera for computers?

<Ying> I tried "Schacken com."

<Vance> No, Steve do you do video conference or any online work with students?

<Maggi> no...tell us about it Steve...

<Steve> first, it's schackne.com, second, I don't do video stuff with students. Major problem is class size here in Taiwan

<Steve> With 65 per class, email isn't even feasible

<Ying> It is over 50 students here

MichaelC78 has joined the chat room.

<Steve> Here is where,Ying?

<Vance> Why were you asking about chat rooms? You must do some online stuff.

<Ying> Taiwan

<Steve> What school?

MichaelC has left the chat room.

<Vance> Maggi, are you having trouble reaching MC's site?

<Ying> The school I studied.

<Steve> I want to do some online stuff via chat, now I am confined to online teaching boards....Blackboard.Com, Quia.Com...both good btw

<Vance> Do you use Hot Potatoes? Have a wed site?

<Vance> Wait, is this Steve Shakne? and then you do have a website. I know it

<Steve> No, Hot Potatoes is prominently featured on my web site...but understand... my school wants traditional platform teaching...they indirectly discourage this stuff.

<Steve> Yeah...the famous? Steve Schackne

<Vance> cool. We're chatting in the voice chat as well

<Steve> I got started on the "net" a few years ago at the University of Macau when I had more time for "development."

<Maggi> without us

<Vance> This is really odd. Ying Lan and Maggi are in one voice chat room and MC and I are in another with Ming.

<Vance> Steve, we're trying to work out what's going on here.

<Maggi> may it perchance be that we have older versions of the plugin?

<Steve> No problems here with text chat

<Vance> Not sure. Ying just joined us in our voice chat.

<Vance> Maggi what kind of background do you have? The old or new one?

<Maggi> Ying left the old one...I went to yours aqnd seem to be the only one.

<Maggi> I clicked on the address out of your email

<Vance> Ying Lan refreshed to reach the new site. Maybe you can clear your cache and then try refresh

<Maggi> I did that before I tried it.

Maggi has left the chat room.

Maggi has joined the chat room.

<Vance> I was having trouble with netscape before too. I switched to IE and solved the problem

<Vance> Now netscape goes to the right place

<Vance> Sorry Steve, I'm becoming concerned that there has been no traffic in my otehr site. It suggests that I might be in the wrong place.

<Steve> No problem

<MichaelC78> You could be right about that Vance.

<Maggi> an not that Maggi is stupid and can't follow directions...<.-)

MichaelC78 is now known as MichaelC.

<Vance> No, of course not. Something odd is going on here and it has something to do with netscape cache

<Steve> Dump the cache

<Ying> Where will you go after leaving Steve?

<Ying> Where will you go after you leaving Taiwan?

<Steve> I'm going to the States to interview....in IT...too old to work in efl

<Vance> Maggi made it to the site, finally

<MichaelC> Vance - no one in the other talk sites - not even you!

<Vance> Whew, congrats, Maggi. Steve too bad about the sound card. Everyone's just rappping away in the hearme site.

<Steve> Let me try it next time...but why would this !!@@@!**& computer support HearMe and not RealAudio?

<Vance> Woooo where did you go Michael?

<Vance> It seemed you were still here the whole time.

<MichaelC> Good q Steve. V - I checked Geocities and Prohosting.

Ying has left the chat room.

<MichaelC> Here? You mean it looked as if I hadn't left the hearme chat????

<MichaelC> I did leave.......

<Steve> I gotta leave soon...dinner's ready. I'll try to download HearMe next time

<Vance> This is weird. Scary. Too many urls, confusing, we'll stick with your in the future

<Vance> OK, Steve. Thanks for dropping in.

<MichaelC> Steve - if your pc supports Real Audio then it should support Hearme.

<MichaelC> See you Steve.

Anonymous2347 has joined the chat room.

<Steve> I take it HearMe is the recommended voice chat...can you use it with Macs?

<Maggi> bye Steve

Anonymous2347 is now known as Ying.

<MichaelC> Can't answer that Steve. Vance?

<Vance> No, I understand you can't use hearme with macs

<Steve> Any voice chat you can use on both platforms?

<MichaelC> Biapchat is very good but you have to buy it - works on both platforms.

<Steve> Gotta go now. Enjoyed it and will try to make it to the next session

<Vance> I don't know myself. Im a pc guy.

<Vance> ok, see you then Steve

<MichaelC> Bye Steve.

<Vance> Thanks for stopping in.

Steve has left the chat room.

<MichaelC> Vance - I'm going to follow the URL in your original email about this session and see where it takes me.

<MichaelC> The URL that points to Voice chat.

<Vance> That's what I'm doing too MC. I just closed the window and am doing the same thing

<MichaelC> OK....let's see.

MichaelC has left the chat room.

At this point, Michael goes to the url I gave everyone worldwide and finds himself alone, although I am "there". We realize we have a problem, so I quit and log back in through the url provided in the email. Michael does the same thing and we meet in the chat.

At 10:30 GMT I received some guests where I work. On return to my computer, I found the Webheads still talking animatedly. In fact, more kept dropping by and we stayed online till past 13:00 GMT. I also found the following in the Homestead chat window:

Maggi: you think

Vance: Of course I believe you. It happened to me too yesterday

Vance: I got the old site.

Maggi: I went to the same address ech time

Vance: In netscape

Vance: So how did you finally reach the correct place?

Vance: Did you purge the cache?

Maggi: who knows...

Vance: Enigmaggi

Vance: At least the webheads were there. That's ultimately who we're catering to.

Maggi: maybe we should think about scheduling class earlier...

Maggi: it was hopping here while you were gone

Vance: It would be hard for me. But if you wanted to have it earlier ... no problem. I could come along when I could.

Vance: Who else was here?

Maggi: at one point we had Amer, Paolo, Ng, Bora, Sue, Ming, Ying and me

Vance: Ng?

Maggi: yes

Maggi: oh...and Kevein too

Vance: Ying mentioned a Nick, but maybe she meant Ng

Maggi: yes

Vance: Now Gloria is having trouble getting here ... (sigh)

Vance: Why don't you experiment next two weeks with different class times?

Maggi: could do

Vance: You can send an email and arrange it. I guess I wouldn't mind an earlier time, I'd just have to come in the middle sometimes

Maggi: it was only a suggestion as so many turned up

Vance: a good one

Maggi: well...many hav gone to bed

Vance: Yeah that side of the world it's good for them. South America is just waking up now.

Maggi: need a split or two days to meet
