Quest Atlantis (QA) is a learning and teaching project using a 3D multi-user environment to immerse children, ages 9-12, in rich educational tasks. http://questatlantis.org It is designed and managed by a team of educational innovators at Indiana Univeristy Centre for Research in Learning Technology lead by Assoc Prof Sasha Barab (and supported by NSF grant funds). We will very soon begin training for teachers interested in implementing QA in their classrooms in 2007. The training will involve being online in QA for three weekly sessions (using a skypecast for audio dialog). The course is intended to get you up to speed with all the tools of QA and to register your class and make curriculum choices, such that you will be ready to teach in QA at the end of the three weeks. 070211 Sunday, Feb 11, 2007 - Ismail gave a presentation on Web 2.0 for educators and students presence online - 9:00 - 10:00 am GMT. He says: "The original title of my presentation was "Web 2.0: Students Gateway to Online Presence and Collaboration". Below, please find the overview about this topic. Personal Language Learning Environments (PLLE) is a new widely spreading global phenomenon among individuals and educators. Teachers and Students need to consider potentials of such tools available for creating their online presence and encourage their collaboration while learning. O'Reilly's phrase about such technologies, or what he called "Web 2.0", has coined this proposed second generation of Web-based services. In this presentation, the participants will be presented to some of the web-based tools available for educators to guide their students create their online presence. The focus of these tools will be building collaboration and sharing among educators. It can be considered a great way to help students develop learners' autonomy and "folksonomy". I will be using yahoo and skype for initial contacts. If I received more emails of people interested, I might use Alado. Let me know of your pace, and we can arrange it accordingly."

Dear Teresa and Fernanda, and all good webheads

I just came back from a lively 5 days Dialog meetings in Portugal invited by CPsquare. This was my first opportunity to meet live with about 18 people and collaborate on real work, plus having set two days aside for semi structured dialog sessions on how to work from a community of practice aspect in organisations, education and community.

We had a guest evening in Setubal (where we stayed outside of town ) and we invited Teresa and Fernanda as local representatives and role models for Becoming Webheads in Action. I can tell you that Webheads have become pretty famous in this context as inspiration for innovative teacher professional community building online.

One of our practice tasks was to convene workshops for THEKA school librarians (in Porto) on web 2.0 for community of practice building as a follow up on sessions with Etienne Wenger - an event which helped us form d hoc groups and motivate participants to get into their own dialogs.

Another task was validation of a EU project on social inclusion, EQUAL where web 2.0 was used for empowerment of community building. Both of these projects had Beverly Trayner as leader and she beautifully managed to prepare and keep the flame burning for our collaboration project as well as for our dialogs, our household practicalities and transport arrangements. Kudos to this ladylike bunch of sparkling energy!!

I've been priviledged to meet and work for almost a week with people like Bronwyn Stuckey and Nancy White whom I already met online in the Networking 2002 conference, and with veteran CPsquare leaders Etienne Wenger and John Smith. This seem like an old dream of mine coming true. And, I've been working on this for many years. So, being able to convene this Webheads /CPSQ dialog around a festive dinner table in a small restaurant in Setubal made me feel extremely happy.

Dear Sus,

It was a very special treat to meet you for the second time f2f five years later and be able to have dinner with you in Lisbon on May 22.

I took Sus to the same place where Joao and I took Rita and Hector in Bairro Alto. We both had a very typical Portuguese dinner that started with green beans on a batter and then fried (peixinhos da horta or "little fish of the vegetabel garden"). We drank some nice wine, had a great talk, and then went for coffee at a local pub. As true Webheads, we didn't stop talking till I left Sus at her hotel.

Then the CPSquare group was very nice to have Sus invite Fernanda and me for dinner last Sunday (May 27) in Setubal. In the true Webhead spirit, we hugged and hugged again when we met, and then had a nice talk over a glass of Moscatel, a local apperitif wine. As the CPSquare people came in, I met John Smith, Nancy White, Bron(wyn) Stuckey and Etienne Wenger, among others. A curiosity: we sat at the dinner table in alphabetical order of first names. It was a wonderful dinner at a local typical restaurant. There were 20 of us. There were many short toasts, but my favourite was Bron's fantastic praise to Webheads: the warmest online community she's ever come across. And she came across several when doing research for her PhD diss. As Sus said, Webheads have made an impression on CPSquare.

Thanks, Sus, for introducing me to this community! It was a very interesting experience.

Chris Jones send this on July 14, but it would have taken place around this time: "Hi, Webheads, I've been traveling for the past 2 weeks since I met up with Susan Berg in Florence ... Susan was a wonderful hostess and indeed it was like meeting up with an old friend. Our classes did an email exchange about 3 years ago when I still taught in Arizona. She showed me some of the lovely countryside around Florence, and I enjoyed meeting her family while she prepared a yummy Italian lunch. It was really a treat to meet her and spend a day with her."

next -070811 Vance was invited to teach a short course on writing on the Internet 11th-13th July during the XXVI Summer Courses of the University of the Basque Country in San Sebastian, Spain. The course is entitled "Learning to write in a global and plurilingual world" and was 3 talks (60' exposition + 15' debate) on Internet (Electronic writing, On-line learning to write, Electronic approach to language learning -focus on writing). There is more information about the university and these courses here: http://www.sc.ehu.es/cursosverano. In order to have something to talk about Webheads Rita Zeinstejer, Sasha Sirk, Nelba Quintana, Doris Molero, and Vance instigated a writing project here: http://writingmatrix.wikispaces.com/. Vance created a Moodle component here: http://www.opensource.idv.tw/moodle/course/view.php?id=46 and a course portal here: http://www.vancestevens.com/writing.htm. Vance also wrote out the text of each lecture, uploaded the slides, and left recordings of the lectures themselves as follows:

  1. Lecture 1: Multiliteracies and the changing landscape of communication in a world without arbiters of what gets published
Internet, electronic genre and writing. Several analogical literacy practices have migrated to Internet. Now we write emails, wikis, blogs, chats or webs. We read on a screen and write with the keyboard and mouse. How has Internet changed literacy practices? Which are the most relevant electronic genres in L2 learning, why, and how can we use them?
  2. Lecture 2: Web 2.0 and Social Networking: What you need to know about these concepts to get your students colloborating online, using tags, rss, and aggregation
L2 learning with an electronic approach. More and more L2 courses incorporate Internet and on line learning activities as part of the syllabus and teaching materials. How does this change our teaching practice? Which are the good teaching practices in an on line course and in a blended-learning course? What free and collaborative online tools exist to help us do it better? (On line learning platforms such as Moodle have become very popular in some secondary and university centres in Spain -but we cannot assume that all the students in the course will be aware of that fact…).
  3. Lecture 3: Putting the forces in motion: Applying technology to foster writing through motivating online environments
Resources and ideas for learning to write on line. Language technologies and engineering offer us powerful resources to help us write and teach writing, such as multi-user virtual environments, pen pals and class collaboration projects, blogging, wikis, Google docs and mapping tools. These greater-picture enhancements can make use of lower-level spelling software, readability analysis systems, automatic assisted translation, terminology data base, plurilingual textual corpora, etc. We also have software that register our writing process, huge on line writing labs, with lots of materials, outlines and information. How we can use these resources in the classroom and in on line courses? What implications do these resources have in the learning of writing?

070725 - Surely, some Webheads must have participated in the July 25 12-hour online Summer festival at http://www.tappedin.org/. The blurb: "From rap to storytelling, from science to games, the festival leaders will take you on a journey to put fun in your classroom for both you and your students. Even the Pre-Festival Tips and Tricks are fun! Here are some quotes from recent participants: Very helpful for me since I am a beginner on-line learner/teacher... Very good tutorial... This is a great place to visit... moderator is nice... Learning how to navigate was a great highlight... I got started through a master's class I'm taking as an elective. The highlight is all the resources available and the helpfulness of everyone I've met here so far... I learned a lot about Tapped In and think it has many valuable resources. 070727 Anne Fox informed us that the current show of the Absolutely Intercultural podcast at www.absolutely-intercultural.com is mainly about podcasting and Second Life in education. The Second Life interview features Webhead Nicky Hockley talking about Edunation. And the next show, due out on July 27 will feature Michael Coghlan, in his role as an Australian rather than an educator (and his daughter) as well as Carla Arena in a child themed episode.

070729 Sunday, July 29, 2007 Webheads in Action/Writing for Webheads: World friendship thru lang. learning 12:00-14:00 GMT ; meets at http://www.tappedin.org/. Topics were educational theory and Writingmatrix http://www.vancestevens.com/writing.htm. Following the Webheads meeting there was (scheduled) a live webcast event on the Worldbridges Network, a town hall meeting: http://www.worldbridges.net

Carla's reaction: "I was thinking about what you mentioned about the Webheads yesterday in our TI meeting. When I searched for the Webheads, you're right full of nothing-to-do-with-us. I was wondering if you could kindly invite the group to tag our stuff in a way that we could see what each other is doing through the tagging system. I was making some searches and realized that if everybody started just tagging "webheadsinaction", then we'd really have a convergence of what is spread on the wide spaces of the Net. By the way, Bee is the one consistently tagging webheadsinaction. I'll just get back to my new blog and rename my tag! Well, just an idea that would expand this networked tagging world. http://www.technorati.com/tag/webheadsinaction "

>Mine: Now why didn't I think of that?? Carla's suggestion is so obvious it smacks of brilliance. I was re-listening to Konrad Glogowski and Christopher Sessums talking on Personal Learning Environments - Exploring Professional Development in a Networked World, their talk at the WiAOC convergence, where Konrad was making the point that for teachers to teach blogging, they need to be blogging themselves, otherwise it's a case of do as I say, not as I do. "Now here's the kicker" he said. The students (in teacher training programs) are generally into social networking in the friends and recreation side of their lives but are not using these tools in their professional work. Why, he wondered, do they not see how the social networking tool can help their teaching? So here I've been giving talks on getting students collaborating by using tags common to the group that wishes to converge their web artifacts, and have not, as Carla pointed out, suggested that webheads do the same in the course of their everyday social networking. So hear ye hear ye, the tag is webheadsinaction Use it liberally. And at this page http://www.technorati.com/tag/webheadsinaction you'll notice an RSS feed. Add that feed to your bloglines to monitor results. Thanks, Carla, Vance

And later that evening: Webheads had a great chat at noon GMT this morning, the time of our regular meeting each Sunday noon GMT in Tapped In http://www.tappedin.org . This morning some of the chat was about writingmatrix. Webheads are bloggers and are very interested in this project. Some said they would like to join us at our live chat this evening. 071020 13:00 PM GMT Saturday, October 20 - The Writingmatrix group Vance Stevens, Nelba Quintana, Doris Molero, Saša Sirk, and Rita Zeinstejer presented “Motivating Student Writers by Fostering Collaboration through Tagging and Aggregating” at the K-12 Online Conference “Playing with Boundaries.” (time of our live fireside chat http://tinyurl.com/2qwznc, according to the K-12 Online Live Events (Fireside chats) schedule: http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=128)

The presenters play with boundaries through the simple expedient of having student bloggers in different countries tag their blog posts with the unique tag term writingmatrix. Searching on that tag in Technorati, the student bloggers in four locations in three different countries have managed to locate one another's posts, leave comments for one another, and have subsequently interacted in other ways as well. The presenters explain how they started the project and how it has branched into other online and even face to face activities involving the students in the participant countries. The presentation is made not only through the voices of the presenters, but with the students themselves lending their voices through their blogs and videos.
