Vance: Hi there, Ying Lan.
Vance: Hello
Ying-Lan: hello
Vance: Nice to see you.
Vance: Guess what?
Ying-Lan: What?
Vance: I'm at home today, not at work.
Ying-Lan: Really! whY?
Vance: I have a surprise two-day holiday.
Ying-Lan: ^surprise two days holiday?
Vance: Yeah. When an Arab leader dies, the Arab world has a mourning period.
Ying-Lan: ^For the "Dubai Summer Prise"?
Ying-Lan: Who died?
Vance: King Hassan of Morocco.
Ying-Lan: Is it sad?
Ying-Lan: ^Is his wife a American?
Vance: No, the Arab governments must express their sympathy by declaring a mourning period in the country.
Vance: hello, still there?
Ying-Lan: ^Now, I am listening to the lecture of "Lester C. Thurow" on internet... Do you want to try the website http://www.cw.com.tw/Bigshot/Thurow/lecture.htm ,
Vance: I could do that, but I would have to change computers. Do you want me to do that?
Ying-Lan: ^You could visit it later.
Vance: OK. What's it about?
Ying-Lan: ^The web site is a famous Economic magazine in Taiwan.
Ying-Lan: ^It is in Chinese big 5.
Ying-Lan: ^But the speech is in Enlish..
Vance: Hmmm, maybe I'll do it MUCH later .. do you find it useful to practice your English with this site?
Vance: Does your test have a lot of listening?
Ying-Lan: ^No,... it is a professonial test about the letter of credit.
Vance: But it requires good knowledge of English?
Maggi: @64,64 !It's Maggi
Maggi: Hi
Maggi: I was busy cl3eaning.
Ying-Lan: ^It is in Chinese.. but ICC uniform Customs and Practice published by ICC.. it is in English.
Maggi: spiders are running everywhere
Ying-Lan: ^But We also read the UCP 500 in Chinese. We have the translation one.
Vance: Hi
Maggi: Vance...it will cost DM 94 from Munich to Innsbruck.
Vance: What is UCP?
Maggi: DM 197,20 from Milan to Innsbruck.
Vance: Oh, thanks Maggi.
Vance: That's great. I appreciate the service.
Maggi: I know what that is Ying.
Ying-Lan: ^Mr. Thurow visited Taiwan and made a speech .. it is very amazing and interesting to read his speech... I read it in Chinese.
Vance: What is it Maggi?
Maggi: I have a student, female going to Taiwan.
Maggi: Internationalö

Maggi: business stuff
Ying-Lan: ^It is a international commercial business .
Maggi: she is in accounting Ying
Vance: Well, what do the letters UCP stand for?
Ying-Lan: ^When you buy something from another country,, you usually make payment by T/T or check.
Vance: k
Ying-Lan: ^But the importer import the cargo... (it is huge and be ship by container) the exporter and importer, both have to make the deal by the Letter of Credit.. bcause the bank will be the "middleman" in
Vance: ok
Ying-Lan: ^Bank will be the "middleman" in this transaction.
Ying-Lan: ^There are a lot of problems incurred.
Maggi: told you ... you donīt want to have to know this stuff,
Vance: So they have to arrange with the bank for a letter of credit, and that's what you do?
Maggi: a Letter of Credit is standard practice with overseas shipments.
Ying-Lan: ^Icc is "Inernational Chamber of Commerce" they made the rule to help peopple to perform it.
Maggi: The bank guarantees payment.
Ying-Lan: ^It sound complicated...
Vance: So is that what you are studying YL? Are you trying to learn about this work so that you can do it?
Ying-Lan: ^To be honest, I had worked in the L/C department of my compay for over 5 years, but I was changed the position last month.
Maggi: What do you do now Ying?
Ying-Lan: ^Now, I work in the loan department now.
Maggi: loans for normal people or businesses?
Ying-Lan: ^But I still have been studying the UCP 500.. do you remember I still be in holiday course to study it.
Vance: Well, what will you do if you succeed in the test?
Ying-Lan: ^I paid the money to study it, I need to pass the test.
Vance: Ah, the UCP 500 ... must be a collection of 500 companies whose stocks are benchmarked, am I right?
Maggi: I wish you lots of luck Ying...you can do it!
Ying-Lan: ^On other hand, I have a important test in next March...
Ying-Lan: NO,,,

Vance: Is it a 500 kilometer race?
Vance: (kidding)
Maggi: you wish...:-)
Ying-Lan: ^I typed the terms of UCP500 but it was destroyed by the wrong key...
Vance: oops
Ying-Lan: ^I can not show you what is UCP 500 ... There are 48 terms to describe the Letter of Credit.
Vance: OK. Maybe I can find some information on the web. I'll ask Jeeves.
Ying-Lan: ^Vance, UCP 500 is "ICC Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits- 1993 Revision"
Maggi: it is boring stuff Vance if you donīt need to know.
Ying-Lan: ^It is boring for non-commercial person.
Vance: A lot of what we have to do to make a living is boring to people who don't get paid to know it.
Ying-Lan: ^If you want to understand what is it, you may try the web site : http://www.ciiwbo.org
Ying-Lan: ^it is wrong.
Ying-Lan: ^the correct one is http://www.iccwbo.org
Vance: OK, having a look ...
Ying-Lan: ^But I recommend that if you have time, Try to listen the speech of Mr. Thurow.
Vance: Ok, the url is in the logs.
Ying-Lan: ^http://www.cw.com.tw/Bigshot/Thurow/lecture.htm
Vance: two times
Ying-Lan: ^It is talking about the knowledge economics.
Ying-Lan: ^I can not understand what he said in English.. but I read it in Chinese.
Vance: I can't listen now because I'm at home near the balcony where I drink the beer
Ying-Lan: ^Relax?
Maggi: :-)
Maggi: still in mourning?
Vance: At work, I have a computer with a sound card on my desk. At home I have one in another room, and I'm using the internet connection.
Ying-Lan: ^I understood it.
Vance: Yes, relaxing. And mourning. So sad, sad, sad, about the king (and about the bars being closed).
Maggi: :-)
Vance: :-)
Ying-Lan: ^Is he is a good leader?
Ying-Lan: ^Is he a good leader?
Vance: I was talking with YL about that earlier. Yes, think he was a good leader, despite the fact that a lot of his people are still impoverished.
Vance: When I was in Morocco, he had a wall built around a particularly bad place because it could be seen by tourists on their way to the beach.
Maggi: Felix should be coming soon...

Felix: In Brazil we can be outdoors all year long.
Ying-Lan: contrast?
Vance: When the summer ends, we appreciate the contrast, believe me.
Michael C: Vance - just checked the world map- we're at very similar latitudes.
Maggi: how can you enjoy beautiful warm weather if you donīt know what it means to be cold.
Vance: Contrast = difference
Vance: We enjoy mild weather through understanding of what it is to be HOT.
Ying-Lan: ^Mr. Thurow just contrasted the Economics of USA and Europe's.
Maggi: how boring ...
Felix: When it's cold, it gets us stucked at home....
Maggi: you donīt know what really cold is Felix.

Ying-Lan: I got it.
Maggi: I have enough family spread around to cover residenc requirements.
