Maggi: Is this the Gloria in Brazil?

Maggi: Ok

Vance: Paraguay?

gloria: yes, Brazil is near Paraguay

Maggi: but not the same

gloria: of course not

Vance: I once visited a place in Brazil where you could visit Argentina and Paraguay in the same day.

Vance: You probably know the place.

gloria: Thanks Vance for the mail

Vance: You are welcome. Did you see your web page?

gloria: the place you just said is known like three borders

gloria: i havent read yet

Vance: That's it. You start in Brazil, go to Argentina in the afternoon, and Paraguay in the evening.

gloria: where are you from

Maggi: Sounds like fun.

Vance: Me? I'm from the USA.

Vance: But I live in Abu Dhabi.

gloria: and you Maggi?

Maggi: I live in Germany.

gloria: where is abu dhabi by the way

Maggi: But am also American

Vance: Abu Dhabi is in the United Arab Emirates, near Saudi Arabia.

Vance: Where do you live in Paraguay?

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Ying-Lan: hi

Maggi: Hi YSing...

Vance: Hi. We were just talking about you.

Maggi: singing Ying...:_)

Ying-Lan: ^Not a class only student's disscussing time

Maggi: Did you get my email Ying?

Ying-Lan: not yet

Vance: Is that where you met?

gloria: yes right

Vance: Do many students come to your discussion, Ying Lan?

Ying-Lan: ^I just open my computer now

Ying-Lan: ^To be honest, gloria is the first student I have met.

Vance: Well, you're doing an excellent job recruiting for webheads!

gloria: ^how can i see the record of our conversation later?

Ying-Lan: Thanks Maggi

Maggi: you're welcome.

Ying-Lan: ^If I want to the export to offer the air freight ,what is the sentence.

Ying-Lan: ^To use the log window, and open the word of office 97 at the same time.

Ying-Lan: ^copy the whole converstaion and save it by word,

Vance: I do that for every lesson. I keep the conversations at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/4631/efi/chatlogs.htm

Ying-Lan: ^Maggi, I just read your email, thans a lot.

Ying-Lan: thanks a lot

gloria: thanks

Maggi: I hope it helped.

Vance: What was your question earlier, YL? You are going to the export office to send some air freight?

Ying-Lan: ^But another question is how to express the suitation,,, I want the exporter to offer the air feight, the price term will be change to "Freight prepare" instead of "Freight Collect".

Vance: I'm not sure what "freight prepare" is ...

Ying-Lan: Sorry, vance

Ying-Lan: ^It is term of price.

Maggi: Let me help here.

Vance: Whew, now I can see again ...

Ying-Lan: ^Business English, especially for Letter of Credit.

Maggi: You want them to offer the option you mean Yinm

Maggi: Or are you asking for the option?

Ying-Lan: ^Option???? NO. They delay the shipment, they have to pay the addtional fee.

Ying-Lan: ^It's more expensive by air than by sea.

Ying-Lan: ^We always ship the goods by sea.

Maggi: You mean that it was their fault and the shipment was delayed and now you want them to send it by air and pay for it?

Ying-Lan: ^You got it.

Ying-Lan: ^Sorry, Vance. I have some troube in my work.

Ying-Lan: ^I want maggi's help.

Vance: I understand. What work do you do Gloria?

Ying-Lan: thanks

Maggi: Then say, since the shipment was delayed we insist on air freight with payment to be covered by your firm.

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, thanks

Vance: What items are you having shipped, Ying Lan?

gloria: i work in a telecommunications company as a technician

Ying-Lan: ^I have been looking for a good business book or "how to use Lettter of Credit" in English. Unfortunately, I have never found it.

Ying-Lan: ^"How to deal with foreign coutry.." like that. Do you have any recommendation?

Maggi: I have a pile of books...

Ying-Lan: ^"Bank English on Letter of Credit"?

Maggi: No one books covers one subject in depth.

Ying-Lan: ^Have you read the book about Bank English on Letter of Credit in English?

Vance: Do you use English in your work, Gloria?

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, I have to read Letter of Credit every day.

Maggi: I can scan some pages on banking and Letter of Credit terms and email them to you.

gloria: yes, and i do my best with it

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks maggi.

Ying-Lan: ^Sometimes, I have to communciate with another bank like citibank , chase bank ..... in English.

Maggi: no problem...I have to find the book first.

Maggi: I had a bank Manager once for 2 yrs...learned a lot about banking.

Ying-Lan: ^I could not express myself in some special situtation,.

Vance: I used to have a set of business letters on disk which served as templates

Ying-Lan: templates?

Maggi: examples

Maggi: they may be out of date now Vance.

Ying-Lan: ^"Bank English" of Business????

Ying-Lan: ^Sometimes, I have to follow something,,, like they make payment late.

Vance: maybe there's something on the Internet for business English

Vance: I have a business English section on my web site

Vance: Right now I'm looking at a web site for the Fondation Yaguarundi. Does that mean anything to you, Gloria?

Ying-Lan: ^We do not receive the proceeds, but another bank said they already made the payment...

Maggi: there's a pile of places...

gloria: yes sure

Ying-Lan: Thanks vance.

Maggi: not proceed but payment or debit

gloria: you know in my country we have two languages

Ying-Lan: payment or debit.

Vance: Spanich and Yaguarundi?

Vance: I mean Spanish?

Maggi: proceedws are the profits from a concert for example that will go somewhere

gloria: your kidding, spanish and guarani :)

Ying-Lan: ^Maggi, Amount of the invoice.. or the proceeds of the T/T.

Maggi: amount of the invoice

gloria: yaguarundi is a guarani name

Ying-Lan: ^So,,, the proceeds of the invoice ..... is wrong.

Vance: So Guarani is the language of the local people?

Maggi: yes

gloria: the native one

Ying-Lan: ^I was always wrong.

Maggi: but it is still understandable.

Vance: And are they in danger from destruction of the jungle?

Ying-Lan: ^I used to write "the proceeds of the above metioned has been credit your account with citibank n.a...." like that.

gloria: most people in here speaks both guarani and spanish

Maggi: The above mentioned amount has been credited to your account with....

Ying-Lan: Thanks

Ying-Lan: hi Michaelc

Michael C: @64,64 !It's Michael C

Maggi: Hi Michael!

gloria: indian people (natives) is a minoritary group but yes they are in danger

Ying-Lan: in danger?

Michael C: Hi everyone.

gloria: because of the destruction of the jungle

Ying-Lan: ^It is a kind of way to welcome gloria?

gloria: hi michael

Maggi: <michael always loves a soft landing ...LOL

Vance: Hi Michael C

Ying-Lan: hi

Maggi: I would have tickled him.

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, you are a big mouth or a red fog?

Vance: Gloria is from Paraguay. I was just looking it up on the Internet, and I found that there are indian people there endagered by deforestation

Maggi: brb

Michael C: Hello Gloria. Nice to meet you.

Michael C: Welcome back Vance.

gloria: nice to meet you too

Ying-Lan: .

Vance: I was wondering if there are many of these people there, and what the people of Paraguay think about their plight.

Vance: How many Spanish speakers are there in Paraguay and how many Guarani speakers?

gloria: almost the same quantity since we speaks both languages

Vance: I mean, how many native speakerr of Guarani, and how many native speakers of Spanish?

Vance: Or do most people there speak the two languages?

Ying-Lan: ^gloria, you could speak three languages,

gloria: you got it

Vance: So are the people of Paraguay mostly of Guarani origin?

gloria: if you can understand this then i can speak three languages

Ying-Lan: You are kidding.

Ying-Lan: ^You speak like a native speaker.

Vance: Yes, I think you can. YL, have a look at Gloria's web page. She has taught herself English.

Vance: Gloria, have you seen Ying Lan's web page?

gloria: long time ago europeans and indians where mixed and then born paraguayan culture

Ying-Lan: ^What does "she has taught herself English"/

Ying-Lan: ^What does "she has taught herself English" mean ?

Vance: The same way you have taught yourself, actually.

Ying-Lan: ^I could not teach myself....

Vance: I guess that means by being interested in the language and reading a lot in it.

Vance: But you are teaching yourself now.

Ying-Lan: ^To learn English by tape...

Vance: When you write your web page, you are actually teaching yourself. Teachers don't really teach. We just help you to learn, or teach yourself.

Ying-Lan: ^Tape taught me how to speak ...

Vance: That was a good question, by the way.

Ying-Lan: ^Teach.... by themself not by another guy?

Vance: If you learn another language, isn't it because you figured it out and worked with it?

Ying-Lan: what?

Maggi: sorry...had to make pit stop

Vance: If you are good at English, it's because you made the effort.

gloria: when you really want to do something you make it possible

Vance: Have you met Michael C? He's another teacher from Australia.

Ying-Lan: made the effort?

Vance: YL, your web page has very good writing on it. You put a lot of effort into your writing.

gloria: years ago i really wanted to drive a car then i began figuring it out how could i then i began driving without going to a driving school

Ying-Lan: gloria, have you got the licence?

Maggi: learning by doing gloria

gloria: of course, i passed the test

Ying-Lan: ^I have to learning by teaching myself... that's a short way to study English... is it right?

Maggi: anytime you use the language Ying you are learning.

gloria: im not sure if it is the shortest way

Ying-Lan: I am learning...

Vance: Yes. And you do that. You have writing about how your language has improved since you first started these classes.

Vance: ... you have written ... I mean

Maggi: but one of the best gloria because you learn to use it in context

gloria: i think that is true

Ying-Lan: ^but maggi,,, I did not know I wrote the wrong sentences...

Maggi: it works best in my real classes too.

Ying-Lan: ^Nobody told me... I am always in wrong way.

Maggi: now you do Ying

Maggi: not always!

Vance: I don't think mistakes in sentences are so important.

Ying-Lan: ^The weakness of Learning language by myself.

Maggi: it was not a mistake that could be misunderstood.

Maggi: stop trying to be a erfectionist!

Maggi: perfectionist

Vance: You see, the more you talk with native speakers, the more you learn to see your own mistakes.

Maggi: this is true

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, when you deal with the several hundreds thousand dollar, the wrong sentence will cause some mistakes.

Maggi: and a big step forward

Vance: So you correct your own mistakes when you are ready to see them.

Vance: Ah, when you put it that way ...

Maggi: don't you have a translator in the bank?

Ying-Lan: ^A big trouble will caused by bad ...

Vance: You are right there. In that case, you need to email one of us and say,"what do I say here"

Ying-Lan: No.. maggi.

Maggi: she did...

Michael C: And then we would ask for some commission!

Ying-Lan: ^In Bank system, we have some regular form to process..

Maggi: if the bank doesn't want to lose money they should have someone who can double check important documents.

Maggi: those forms should be approved and checked by a professional.

Ying-Lan: ^But our customer thinks we are the best... they always ask me some question

Vance: I have some business sites on my web site. Have a look at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/4631/business.htm

Maggi: if they need something and you are not sure, double check with me first

Maggi: tell them you will get back to them asap

Ying-Lan: ^Thansk. maggi.

Ying-Lan: Thanks, vance.

Ying-Lan: I will check this web site later.

Vance: I'll look on the Internet for a collection of business letters ... brb

Maggi: How's the weather down under Michael on this first day of Autumn for you?

Michael C: Well for the fisrt time in months I'm wearing socks and a jumper!

Maggi: all right!!!!!!!!!

Ying-Lan: ^Jump?

Ying-Lan: ^Or dancing?

Maggi: I only have a jogging suit on...

Michael C: Yes, and some leaves have started to fall.

Maggi: I love Spring when everything comes alive again...:-)

Ying-Lan: ^Me, too.

Maggi: and that fresh green colour

Ying-Lan: ^But it is easy to catch a cold in Spring.

Michael C: Gardens in southern Australia come alive in the autumn. A lot of thinfs go green again.

Maggi: I am ok

Maggi: same thing in California

Michael C: That would be right - same latitude.

Ying-Lan: ^What did you mean? michaelc... some is getting green in Fall.

Maggi: Hi Mackie

Ying-Lan: mackie

mackie: hi everyone.

Ying-Lan: Are you a student at EFI?

Michael C: Because our winters are so hot a lot of plants dry out and go yellow. When the rain comes in autumn they get greener.

mackie: EFI?

Michael C: EFI = English for the Internet

Michael C: Guess she wasn't!

Ying-Lan: ^She is a visitor.

Ying-Lan: .

Ying-Lan: ^I forget to ask Vance.... what's new in New York?

Michael C: Vance is still away looking....

Ying-Lan: I think so.

Vance: No, I'm back. I missed Mackie.

Ying-Lan: ^Is it alway rainny in Australia?

Michael C: You know Mackie?

Vance: You can look up "business letters" in Alta Vista. There's stuff there.

Michael C: It rarely rains in Australia Ying.

Ying-Lan: ^I thought it is dry

Vance: No, I don't know Mackie. Just noticed the presence.

Michael C: I think Mackie stumbled into the wrong night club!

Vance: New York was cold, YL. It was snowing some. I caught a cold.

Ying-Lan: ^ohhhh bad

Ying-Lan: ^To take care

Ying-Lan: how?

Vance: I realize I'm not going to have time for this. I'm going to have to run.

Ying-Lan: I got it.

Maggi: I do pay more...

Ying-Lan: It is more convenience.

Maggi: But the Telekom here laid all these cables

Maggi: it is very convenient...and the price is finally coming down.
