Chat with students Ying-Lan from Taiwan and Felix from Brazil, and teachers Michael C, MAD Maggi, and Vance

June 20, 1999

Vance: @64,64 !It's Vance

Maggi: Hi Vqance!

Maggi: ooops

Vance: Hi. Doing a couple of things at once here. I thought maybe

you were here with Felix.

Maggi: my fingers slipped yesterday so fast that I rearranged my

whole screen...interesting.

Maggi: Felix is still only talking with me on icq.

Vance: one moment please

Felix: @64,64 !It's Felix

Maggi: Look out...Felix is coming!

Vance: So, things are confusing as usual. I thought I was going to

have to run home to get my bathing suit.

Felix: I am here

Maggi: Hi Felix...

Vance: Hi Felix

Felix: a bikini Vance?

Felix: LOL

Felix: Just kidding

Maggi: like an eye patch maybe?

Vance: One of my diving students is a friend of my son's.

Felix: Are these diving classes free Vance?

Maggi: are you interested too Felix?

Vance: I've got all my equipment in the car ... yeah they're free

... I always teach for free LOL

Maggi: we are suckers...but satisfied ones

Felix: yes I am

Felix: ROFL

Maggi: would love to see you show up with everything but the

trunks...:-)

Vance: but I left my bathing suit at home ... but the kid who is a

friend of my son's is there now, and he can bring my bathing suit when he comes

to the pool!!

Felix: what does trunks mean Maggi ?

Maggi: bathing suit in American

Felix: oh

Maggi: men have trunks

Maggi: like a car

Maggi: LOL

Felix: ???????????

Maggi: we have a bathing costume in British English

Maggi: maybe an elephant...who knows

Felix: ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Vance: you mean a boot?

Maggi: oh dear...now I have to explain...:-)

Felix: yes you do maggi

Maggi: a boot is British for a trunk

Vance: There are some websites explaining differences in British

and Americlish.

Felix: and what does trunk have to do with a man's bathing suit ?

Felix: you mean that a trunk is very you keep your stuff.. Is that

??

Maggi: how do I explain that politely...let me see

Felix: a trunk is where you keep...

Felix: politety.. dont need it... go straight to the point..

Vance: The point of my story is that because the kid is bringing

the trunks, I can chat for a minute. Otherwise I was going to have to run home.

Maggi: an appendage...

Maggi: well good...so talk before you have to rush off Vance!

Felix: appendage?? Are you talking Japanese today maggi? LOL

Vance: Now we can talk about euphemisms. Do you know the word

euphemism, Felix?

Felix: lol

Felix: yes I do.. But honestly neither in Portuguese nor in ENglish

I know what it means

Maggi: I think he does, but you give it a go Vance!

Felix: let me look it up in a port dic

Vance: A euphemism is a word you use when you don't want to say the

REAL word. Like "appendage" for ... you know ...

Maggi: he knows

Felix: I got it

Felix: like a mother sucker = a bad guy.. LOL

Vance: Yeah, like that.

Felix: I dont know appendage maggi

Maggi: that one is not so very polite

Maggi: yes you do!

Vance: From "append" = to attach. An appendage is an attachment.

Felix: I just tried to give an example Maggi, dont be offended.

Maggi: I aam never offended

Maggi: I know you better Felix

Felix: so appendage in maggi's context is a sexual relation?

Maggi: you are harmless

Felix: sometimes Maggi.. LOL

Maggi: no...a part of the body Felix

Felix: ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Vance: No, it's something attached to your body.

Felix: I got it

Felix: I am fond of this talk.. LOL

Maggi: I am coming to Brazil and whack you one...:-)

Felix: lol

Felix: Be my guest MAGGI

Maggi: I will

Vance: Everyone likes to talk about ... you know ... but no one

wants to SAY it ... why IS that?

Felix: oops

Felix: just read the meaning of WHACK.. DONT DARE MAGGI

Maggi: Because maybe we look like we have nothing else on our

minds?

Vance: In essence, we don't.

Maggi: LOL

Felix: I think it all depends on the way the conversation goes...

Felix: LOL

Maggi: I would never really whack you Felix

Felix: WHEW!!!

Felix: YEsterday we played a nice game in a bar..

Maggi: Good thing huh? I know a better strategy.

Felix: It's called hmmm few or many

Maggi: and how do you play?

Felix: it's typically a game for alcoholics

Maggi: oh

Felix: well, a person choose secretly a number from 0 -500

Vance: got one

Maggi: big range

Felix: and then make 2 columns on a paper FEW = MANY

Vance: k

Felix: then the next player try NOT to guess the number, cause the

person who go it is going to drink a glass of a beverage..

Felix: do you wanna make a try now VAnce and MAggi

Felix: It's an excellent game

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Vance: Hi YL.

Maggi: sorry...my son just called

Ying-Lan: Am I late?

Maggi: Hi YL

Vance: Right on time.

Ying-Lan: hi

Maggi: I was an hour early then?

Vance: And you're up early, Felix? Did you not go to bed?

Ying-Lan: Vance, Maggi and Felix , how are you?

Maggi: He actually fell out of bed !

Felix: yep.. Yesterday afternoon I got drunk playing that game...

So I went to bed early

Felix: Fine Ying.. Thanks for me e-mails..... How are you?

Felix: for the

Ying-Lan: Vance, Will you go to the diving class?

Maggi: Not bad and you ?

Vance: Yes, in fact, I was about to say I have to go now.

Felix: I think the effect of the beverage is still on.. I am

mispelling a lot..heheh

Ying-Lan: You mean the Chyi's story and Ally?

Maggi: I hope your trunks show up :-)

Felix: and the Bumper Sticks too

Felix: Lol

Ying-Lan: You receive the bumper stickers?

Felix: yep

Vance: I got all those things.

Ying-Lan: ^Was it from the e-group?

Felix: yes ying

Vance: And I canceled the incorrect email address.

Maggi: I think I need to save this now,,,

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks, vance.

Maggi: happy swimming Vance..

Ying-Lan: ^But Felix,,, it did not work.. because the egroup reject my

email.

Maggi: wqas i

Maggi: was it too big maybe?

Vance: I'll put Chyi's song up on our web site YL if you want,

along with your story about her, and people can go there to hear it.

Ying-Lan: ^Would you mind to checking it was from egoup or Ying ?

Felix: ROFLMAO.. My wife is saying now.. Who is this man with your

name on the screen? I explained her that it's just an avatar.. Then she said..

Sorry hon, but you are handsome but the man on the screen is

Maggi: I got it

Felix: gorgeous

Maggi: true Felix

Felix: No Ying. I got them all from e-group

Felix: but wife uh??? Telling the truth that way...

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks, Vance, Please put chyi's story at your web sites.

Vance: From you to webheads and from webheads to us I think ...

Maggi: honesty is the best policy

Felix: Maggi, maggi, maggi.. LOL

Ying-Lan: ^You could do anything, if you like.

Felix: Who could do anything Ying?

Maggi: you told me I have skin like a baby Felix

Felix: yes, maggi... that's right

Vance: I've really got to go now. Thanks for keeping the log,

Maggi. Bye everyone.

Felix: like a baby buttocks

Maggi: from just looking at my photo

Maggi: bye Vance...have fun!

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Felix: so let's play that game or arent you interested?

Ying-Lan: Vance is gone?

Felix: he went to his diving class Ying

Maggi: Yep

Maggi: hang on...I have to save this...

Ying-Lan: It is weird... I just received several emails from egoup..

Ying-Lan: ^But I sent them two days ago.

Felix: dont worry Maggi. I am also saving

Maggi: ok...I'm getting good at this...

Maggi: why didn't you tell me Felix?

Maggi: I'm saving in two places

Felix: tell what?

Felix: oh... I forgot

Ying-Lan: so

Maggi: that you are saving it too...-

Felix: so what Ying?

Ying-Lan: Do you like these stories?

Maggi: I don't watch TV

Maggi: I don''t know th

Felix: Yes, ying.. they are interesting

Maggi: the stories

Maggi: they are interesting

Ying-Lan: I think it will take spaces in your computer... I apologize.

Felix: But I couldn't understand the qcq file you sent.. There's so

much background noise

Maggi: I know my students like this kind of stuff.

Ying-Lan: Yes,. I think so.

Maggi: no problem...I still have plenty of spqace

Maggi: spqce

Ying-Lan: So... maybe someone will give us the scripts.

Maggi: aaahhhh space

Ying-Lan: space

Felix: yes, maybe

Ying-Lan: ^Space can not be used as spaces?

Maggi: spaces are the area between things

Maggi: space means the room you have

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks.

Maggi: on the computer and in your house for example

Ying-Lan: ^Another question is Which one is correct "Betty is of the

same age as Tom is." or "Betty is the same age as Tom is."

Felix: the second sentence

Ying-Lan: How about you, maggi?

Maggi: both are correct

Felix: Dont trust me Ying? LOL Just kidding

Felix: both????????????

Maggi: yes.

Felix: See ying.. you'd better not trusth

Felix: trust

Ying-Lan: ^Felix... My dictionary wrote "Betty is of the same age as

Tom is".

Felix: I've never heard this construction

Ying-Lan: ^That's why I asked the question.

Maggi: only because a rule says that you should never end a

sentence with a preposition

Ying-Lan: ^I have not heard it before.

Maggi: but we do

Maggi: that construction is stilted

Ying-Lan: ^"Space in my computer", or "Space on my comuter"

Maggi: do you have space in your computer on you disk

Maggi: your harddisk

Maggi: eee...that was German spelling...disc

Ying-Lan: ^It is perfect explanation.

Felix: yes.

Maggi: thank you Ying :-)

Felix: maggi

Ying-Lan: ^"It will take more space in your computer on your hard

disk," Right?

Maggi: yes?

Felix: a doubt in pronounciationo

Felix: pronounciation

Felix: adult - the stress syllabe is A right?

Maggi: yes Ying

Maggi: yes Felix

Ying-Lan: adult?,,, troubled me.

Maggi: aah dult

Felix: but I was listening to an American text and the voice-over

pronounced Adult almost like ADopt.... the stress in the DU

Maggi: hey...eversyone does it different...

Maggi: tell your students not to worry

Maggi: as long as the person understands

Ying-Lan: ^"adult"

Felix: so, it's correct to stress DUL then

Ying-Lan: ^I practiced the word several times yesterday. But now, I

don't remember how to pronounce it.

Felix: what word Ying?

Maggi: don't waste time trying to be perfect...

Ying-Lan: ^I just the dictionary.

Maggi: ...do like Deden does and just start talking

Ying-Lan: ^Some words are similiar...

Maggi: with the practice you will get better

Felix: like man and men... bed and bad... I have problems with

those words too

Ying-Lan: ^Sometimes, it will cause the misunderstand.

Felix: I agree with Ying

Maggi: misunderstanding

Ying-Lan: Felix, me too.

Ying-Lan: ^Sometimes, it will cause the misunderstanding. .

Maggi: not really, because you know from the rest of the sentence

which one it is.

Maggi: it will cause misunderstanding

Felix: but Maggi, if we are studying a language we have to

pronounce it correctly... if accent of course,, but correctly

Felix: with accent..

Maggi: what is correct Felix

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, Can you distinguish the word with s or without s?

Maggi: there are so many different accents with native speakers

Ying-Lan: hi

Maggi: how can you learn them all?

Felix: I have problem with E and A like Bed and Bad... and ED like

Loved... Talked....

Maggi: the ed is either a t or d sound

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, Can you distinguish the word with s or wihout s from

sentences when you are talking with someone?

Maggi: which word with s Ying

Ying-Lan: ^Like talk and talks.... He/she.... + present tense... the

verb with s.

Maggi: bad is an aaaaahhhhhh sound like when you stick your finger

down your throat:-)

Felix: I can recognize s in sentences..... but generally I dont

recognize Love and Loved...

Maggi: yes...sound like a snake...sssssssss

Ying-Lan: ^Or aren't and are... do and don't...

Maggi: do is like when you are surprised and go oooooooooo

Felix: ying, I learned something.. You are going to get used to the

sounds when you listen to it more and more..

Maggi: and don't is the second pqart of being surprised...ohhhhhhhh

Ying-Lan: ^What do you mean? maggi...

Maggi: making sounds

Maggi: dooooooooo and dohhhhhhhnt't

Ying-Lan: ^Felix,, I knew that... but it still troubles me.

Maggi: stop letting it trouble you Ying and just get on with trying

to speak

Felix: It still troubles me too Ying. But we dont speak with native

speakers constantly.. That's the problem.. I dont worry about it anymore.

Maggi: stop worrying about it

Ying-Lan: o.k.

Maggi: there are plenty of native speakers who don't understand

each other.

Ying-Lan: Felix.. do you have an experience.. like one day you wake

up, you suddently could not unerstand the story wrote in English?

Felix: Same in Brazil... Depend on the region.. The slangs they use

are crazy

Ying-Lan: ^Felix.. do you have an experience.. like one day you waked

up, you suddently could not unerstand the story wrote in English?

Felix: Only if I dont know the vocabulaly Ying

Felix: woke up

Ying-Lan: ^Really???

Felix: yes...

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks ... woke up

Maggi: I have recipes I wrote in Swedish over 20 yrs ago that I

have to scratch my head first.

Felix: English language has the biggest vocabulary among all the

other languages

Ying-Lan: ^You know... These days,,, I found I could not understand

the story wrote in English.

Maggi: true Felix...even we don't know them all...:-)

Ying-Lan: ^You know... These days,,, I find myself could not

understand the stories wrote in English.

Felix: But was it a new story or one that you had already

understood?

Ying-Lan: I don't know...

Maggi: Ying- these days I find that I cannot understand the stories

I wrote in English

Ying-Lan: ^LIke the email from Moral.

Felix: Well, it's all about vocabulary Ying....

Maggi: I am not getting Moral's messages

Maggi: they are all in some cod4

Felix: yesterday I read a text in English on pronounciation

Maggi: cod4

Maggi: code

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, the stories have writen by some one.

Maggi: looks like a chicken walked across the screen

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, the stories have been writen by some one, not I. .

Felix: It's says WHY the Hell COW doenst rhyme with LOW but

through, ryhmes with To, TOO, BLUE, SHoe.. See, English is not that easy

Maggi: written

Maggi: hey...some other languages are not easy either.

Maggi: like Latin

Felix: of course not...

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, the stories have been written by some one, not I. .

Felix: But the topic is English now

Maggi: who wrote them then Ying?

Maggi: English is crazy but fun°

Felix: I dont care if Japanae, Chinese of whatever is difficult. I

dont study those languages.

Felix: or whatever

Felix: OH MY.. WHAT A SPELLING I am into today

Maggi: Chinese is easy...Japanese can be a problem

Maggi: you fell out of bed...remember Felix?!

Ying-Lan: Somebody. told me.:To study Germanic is mord harder than to

study English.

Maggi: English is a germanic language...and half Latin.

Ying-Lan: ^Felix, trust me... like maggi said.. Chinese is easy..

there is no verb tense.

Ying-Lan: ^and quantity

Maggi: it is harder in the beginning because of all the

endings...later it gets easier.

Maggi: The opposite happens in English.

Ying-Lan: Really?

Felix: Latin language is very hard on Grammar... But pronounciation

is very easy

Maggi: except French:-)

Felix: anyone wants a pizza?/

Maggi: nah

Ying-Lan: ^I have met a German when I visited Norway.. she told me

even a native speak still be troubled the grammer of Germanic.

Maggi: I am going to put some salmon steaks on...

Ying-Lan: ^I have met a Germany when I visited Norway.. she told me

even a native speak still be troubled the grammer of Germanic.

Maggi: Even the Germans have problems with their grammar...yes

Ying-Lan: ^Rally?

Maggi: you met a German

Ying-Lan: yes.

Maggi: yes

Maggi: they have a reform now

Ying-Lan: ^Two.. they are students of university.

Maggi: it doesn't really solve the

==========================================

Maggi: but now they have a lot of English in German

Maggi: like a mobile phone is called a handy...

Maggi: I like that...it is handy.

Ying-Lan: ^Cellular?

Maggi: in the US yes, it is called a cell phone

Maggi: think I better save this again...:-)

Ying-Lan: ^You know we say it is "Big brother big" in Chinese.

Felix: what is BBB ying/

Ying-Lan: ^We call "pager" as "B B Call"... it always alarms like

"BBB"

Felix: ohhhh

Ying-Lan: ^"Big Brother Big" is "cell phone" in Chinese.

Felix: i got it

Maggi: ok

Felix: Ying, have you ever took the TOFEL ?

Ying-Lan: ^I did not know the "cell phone" and "pager

==========================================

^No... I am afraid of the TOEL... it is too hard to pass.

Maggi: that is a test that many native speakers would not be able

to pass

Felix: really Mad?

Maggi: yes...really

Felix: i see

Ying-Lan: ^Really...

Maggi: they ask really tricky questions

Felix: Ying, maggi owe us something... Do you remember what it is?

Ying-Lan: ^That's the reason I always tell myself.

Ying-Lan: What?

Ying-Lan: I forgot it.

Maggi: what do I owe you...a PureVoice message?

Felix: a pure voice

Felix: yes

Ying-Lan: Yes.. the pure voice.

Ying-Lan: ^Maggi is very busy to make money to live...

Maggi: mine is going too fast...everyone sounds like a chipmunk

Felix: oh

Maggi: I have to try and download it again.

Ying-Lan: ^Have you adjusted the + or - ? You could see it on the

screen.

Felix: maybe the + button is so high...

Maggi: it is really funny though!

Maggi: maybe

Felix: the + - buttons are not for the volume Maggi,, maybe that's

the problem

Maggi: could be

Maggi: I will try that first

Felix: ok

Ying-Lan: ^Maybe it is the answer.

Maggi: but it was really funny to listen to Michael and Vance

Felix: why funny?

Maggi: talking so fast!

Maggi: like a chipmunck

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, how about giving me the script of John.qcp?

Felix: my log window stucked

Maggi: stuck

Maggi: no ed

Felix: ok

Felix: @64,64 !It's Felix

Maggi: I have not listened or looked at it yet Yyi9ng

Maggi: ooops Yying#

Ying-Lan: ^Felix.. what's wrong with him?

Maggi: I think he is having problems

Felix: @64,64 !It's Felix

Ying-Lan: ^It's o.k. Maybe you will take a look at it later.

Felix: i am back again

Ying-Lan: ^Wait... you have a real class tody, don't you?

Maggi: Yes Ying...I will

Maggi: me?

Felix: on Sundays?? yuck

Ying-Lan: ^If you get the time... please listent the file.

Maggi: no not on Sunday

Ying-Lan: what

Felix: Sunday was made to unwind

Maggi: no live classes on Sunday...only here

Felix: kick up the heels and party

Maggi: I ha

Felix: I ha ?????????????????

Maggi: have real classes tomorrow starting at 7.30 am

Felix: wow

Maggi: yes...great way to start the week:-)

Ying-Lan: ^They go to class before they work...

Maggi: with dr. so and so

Felix: what do you mean Maggi?

Ying-Lan: so and so

Maggi: yes...most of them spend 80% of their time in meetings

Maggi: they are a bunch of Phd's

Felix: meetings are boring when it happens a lot

Maggi: here they are called Dr....so and so means I don't know the

names

Felix: when they happen a lot

Ying-Lan: ^Most of them spend 80% of their time in meeting.. but who

works?

Maggi: So Monday morning is the best time for them

Felix: in Brazil we say Dr. Fulano or Dr. Fulano de tal

Ying-Lan: ^only 20% of worker make money?

Michael C: @64,64 !It's Michael C

Ying-Lan: ^Hi, Michaelc

Maggi: no, Ying ... I meant that they spend 80% of the time they

work in meetings#

Maggi: Hi Michael

Michael C: Hi folks!

Felix: Howdy Michael

Ying-Lan: ^Maggi, do you think German is too serious?

Maggi: I have the log Felix#

Felix: Tomorrow I will start a Corel Draw course

Maggi: the people or the language?

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, their work is "attending the meeting".

Maggi: Corel Draw is cool Felix

Maggi: jump in here Michael...:-)

Felix: i dont have any clue about it.. It has hundreds of

functions...

Maggi: punch buttons and see what happens

Michael C: I find Corel Draw confusing! Too many functions!

Felix: Hey Michael, did you realize we have a student living in

Adelaide in our e-fi class?

Ying-Lan: Who?

Michael C: Yes I did Felix. My wife used to teach her!

Felix: I forgot her name

Felix: oh really? So you know her personally

Michael C: Her name is Latifa. Yes I have met her.

Felix: is your wife a teacher too?? Cool

Michael C: Pretty cool!

Michael C: Sometimes I try and persuade her to join EFI but then we'd

need 2 Net connections!

Felix: why not in a different time?

Michael C: We'd both be online at the same time.

Michael C: Generally the only practical time for us here is 10-12 pm.

Felix: oh I see.. Maybe a network would be ok.... Do you have 2

computers in your house ?

Michael C: Yes we do. I have thought about the idea of a local network!

Felix: a local network will work.

Ying-Lan: ^That's interesting.

Michael C: Maggi - do you want my opinion on serious Germans?

Ying-Lan: ^Have you email something to your wife?

Felix: The only problem is that she wont participate in our hanger

parties.. lol Just kidding

Michael C: I doubt it Felix.

Maggi: ooo...

Michael C: And no I have never emailed ny wife Ying. She is not a Net

used yet....

Felix: husband x wife dont work together in a party like that

Ying-Lan: Ooh...

Michael C: not a net user...

Felix: I mean... I will never take my wife into that

Michael C: I'm glad.

Ying-Lan: ^go on your opinion of German. Please.

Maggi: sure Michael...give me your opinion about serious Germans

...

Michael C: OK. This is of course a generalisation but I think Germans

are a bit more serious than other races.

Maggi: true...but you know what...?

Ying-Lan: what?

Michael C: But they allso know how to have a good time as good as other

people. They just take longer to loosen up.

Maggi: ---they are more open than others and honest about how they

are.

Michael C: That's interesting Maggie.

Maggi: more so than the Dutch

Felix: I think the world is changing in behavior..

Michael C: Maybe. How so felix?

Maggi: there is a fine line between using a generalisation to help

you understand a country...

Felix: They are becoming more outgoing, of course there are weirdos

like confuse freedom with mess, violence.

Maggi: and getting it wrong because there are always exceptions

Maggi: The Finns take the longest to loosen up..:-)

Ying-Lan: ^There is a famous author married a German. She said "

German always make a strong bed, like they will have slept for over 100 years."

Felix: people like to generalize a nation by a fact that happened

or a person they knew.. That's not fair

Michael C: Yes - that's the important thing is these discussions about

national characteristics. There are ALWAYS exceptions.

Michael C: So what do you think that means Ying?

Maggi: but you know what...they (the Germans) are are a very gentle

people.

Maggi: they be

Ying-Lan: ^i don't understant what meam?

Michael C: i think we have to trust your opinions on this Maggie.

Felix: I think the world is full of jerks and gentle ppl....

Michael C: You are in a postion to know them intimately.

Michael C: Well Ying I think it means that Germans do things

properly...

Maggi: true...they get on my nerves sometimes though:-)

Michael C: Why do they get on your nerves?

Maggi: that is what gets on my nerves

Michael C: Oh. So they're perfectionists?

Felix: Yesterday a friend of mine told me that her host family

charges their daughter 150 dollar to live in their house. In my culture, that's

unacceptable if the parents make ends meet..

Maggi: that everything should be perfect

Felix: ps: this happened in the USA

Michael C: Is this a German host family Felix?

Maggi: yes, Felix...but maybe they are trying to teach something

Michael C: I thinl it's OK to charge board or rent....

Felix: yes Maggi, but I dont understand this means.

Felix: I dont think it's ok..

Maggi: but things are changing fast...and I do my part :-)

Michael C: It's quite normal here. Parents do the same thing woth their

children.

Michael C: Not a perfectionist maggie?!

Felix: Only if the parents dont make good money and their sons

work.. So, this way they can help pay the bills.. But if they have money (in

this case I am talking about, they are bankers)...

Maggi: I am about to do the same with my son...:-)

Felix: See Michael.. It's all about culture

Maggi: I used to be one...not any more

Ying-Lan: ^Feliex. The daughter is single or not?

Michael C: People (including children) should contribute to the family

finances.

Maggi: culture is a strong thing for some

Felix: another example.. If you have a brother/sister and want to

go there to visit, you dont need to phone frist.. you just go

Michael C: That's the same in Australia.

Felix: yes, she is a 18 year old single daughter

Maggi: not nice to just show up unexpected

Felix: amonth the family Brazilians dont see any problem

Felix: among

Ying-Lan: ^Felix, Does she work for money?

Maggi: so I can just show up Felix?

Felix: nope...

Michael C: It was the same in Holland maggie. That used to really bug

me.

Felix: She had to start working because of that..

Ying-Lan: it is strange

Michael C: In Australia you can just show up without warning.

Maggi: not in Germany...

Maggi: course there are exceptions

Felix: So is Australia the same way as in Brazil Michael? (about

visiting close friends, family)

Felix: same in Brazil

Ying-Lan: ^Do you need to pay the money to your parent when you were

18.

Michael C: Ying - if my grown up children don't work we can not

survive.

Maggi: I MOVEED

Ying-Lan: ^maggi. Do you need to pay the money to your parent when you

were 18.

Maggi: oops..moved out Ying

Ying-Lan: ^You moved out of your parent's house when you were 18.

Maggi: when I was 17

Michael C: But when I was living with my parents at that age i had to

pay some board.

Felix: Because it was necessary (they didnt make much money) or

because of the culture Michael?

Maggi: my son wants to get a job to help out

Ying-Lan: ^Soo. that's great.. you paid your university and made money

for your self.

Michael C: Because of the culture I guess Felix.

Michael C: It helped me understand the value of money.

Ying-Lan: ^When you were only 17.

Felix: Do you do the same with your kids Michael?

Maggi: I worked and went to school at night...because I had no

money to pay for it I just sat in.

Ying-Lan: ^You have made money for yourself since you were 17.

Maggi: That means I did not get credit.

Maggi: Later I took the tests to get a degree.

Michael C: If they had enough work yes i would Felix. At the moment

they dont have much work.

Felix: I see.

Ying-Lan: ^That's great!

Felix: It's all about culture

Michael C: If they were working full time (or nearly) absolutely!

Maggi: 16 actually Ying

Ying-Lan: ^WOOOOOO! Did you tell your son about this?

Felix: how old are your kids Michael?

Michael C: I left home at 19. What about you Felix? (My kids are 20 and

19 and 15)

Maggi: before that it was only babysitting but I still had to buy

all my clothes etc. with that.

Felix: I never left home.

Michael C: Do you love with your parents Felix?

Ying-Lan: ^You know.. I still live with my parents even I am 35.

Michael C: I mean LIVE!

Michael C: I know Ying.

Felix: I married when I was 18.. And I still lived in my parents

house ( a 3 store building)

Felix: talking about parents.. My father just showed up

Felix: brb

Ying-Lan: show up?

Maggi: yes...Ying we have talked about this

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, I don't think you will let your son go out...

Michael C: Ying - do you have to tell people that you are going to

visit them in Taiwan?

Michael C: Or can you just drop in?

Ying-Lan: YOu mean I drop in my freind house.

Maggi: my son is gone for the weekend...camping with friends

Michael C: Yes...

Ying-Lan: ^ maggi, I mean he want to move out when he is 16.

Maggi: He wouldn't want to do that yet.

Maggi: but 18 yes,maybe

Ying-Lan: ^for Michaelc. I usually to visit my friends and

my-grand-mother without advice.

Maggi: We are both looking forward to living separate lives ...:-)

Ying-Lan: ^But I think it is bad... because sometimes they went out

and no body at their house.

Michael C: OK - that's similar to Australia.

Ying-Lan: Really???

Michael C: Yes. We just drop in on people.

Maggi: that is the risk you take when you show up unexpectedly

Maggi: have to save again

Michael C: Bravo Maggie!

Ying-Lan: ^"Bravo"?

Michael C: Bravo = well done.

Ying-Lan: ^English?

Felix: Bravo... I like that

Felix: nope.. Italian Michael C: English steals many words!

Ying-Lan: ^"a shout of joy because someone had done well."

Michael C: That's right Ying.

Ying-Lan: ^"a shout of joy because someone has done well." I look at

my dictionary.

Maggi: we are good at snitching words from other languages

Felix: We say it in Portuguese too

Maggi: I am getting good at this...:-)

Michael C: Bravo again!

Maggi: sssssnitching and saving

Ying-Lan: ^snitich = stolen?

Maggi: snitch is to take something without prmission

Michael C: Yep.

Maggi: ok...like stealing

Ying-Lan: ^Every languae did.

Maggi: look in my dictionary

Ying-Lan: ^like Chinese and Japanese... Especially the later one.

Maggi: English is a champ at stealing words

Felix: like when brothers snitch clothes from their parents or

other brothers to go to a party?

Michael C: Yes I suppose so but English has a reputation for doing a

lot of it.

Maggi: latter

Ying-Lan: latter.

Felix: Portuguese snitches lots of English words..

Michael C: That's one reason why Engloish spelling is so inconsistent.

Michael C: We don't change the spelling when we take the words into

English.

Maggi: we took the rules from the language we stole from

Felix: i see

Maggi: Germans are doing it now with English...

Maggi: ...like handy for a mobile phone

Felix: English has lots of spanish and french words in its

vocabulary

Felix: like macho

Maggi: yep

Felix: fiance

Maggi: a macho is a macho

Felix: resume

Felix: felix is a macho

Maggi: put the

Maggi: ýes you are...but anice one

Maggi: only psuedo macho

Felix: Felix is THE macho... that's better

Maggi: oh...there are more of you :-)

Felix: lol

Ying-Lan: ^What dose Macho mean? I can not find it in my dictionary.

Maggi: résumé

Felix: fiancée

Maggi: a man who thinks he is cool...:-)

Felix: Macho = man... but in a machist way

Michael C: Maggie or Felix - would you like to explain 'macho'?

Ying-Lan: Machist?

Maggi: masochist

Michael C: So are you sexist Felix?

Ying-Lan: ^Felix.. your icon is a cool man whom I like.

Maggi: not really...

Felix: for instance.. A macho doesnt allow his wife to work out, he

has the obligation of cum 3-4 times, that a woman has to work only at home..

Felix: thanks Ying

Michael C: Often macho men are sexist......

Maggi: Felix is only half macho

Ying-Lan: ^Felix.. your icon is a Macho whom I like. ONly I like the

icon.

Maggi: He loves women...

Felix: yes, but nowadays we use MAcho to describe a REAL MAn,, not

the ones who use long hair, earings, etc..

Michael C: Half macho is not real macho then!

Felix: there's no half macho Michael...

Maggi: you are Felix

Felix: in the sense of the word.. There's only 2 options... Be or

not be a macho

Ying-Lan: ^So.. you are a superman.

Felix: there are

Michael C: I agree Felix. You are either macho or you're not!

Maggi: to be or not to be...that is the question...:-)

Felix: LOL

Felix: Shakespeare

Ying-Lan: Good one. maggi.

Michael C: I don't think I'm macho......

Felix: me neither

Ying-Lan: ^ ^o^

Maggi: no comment

Felix: But never say it in Brazil Michael

Michael C: So you let your wife work Felix?!

Felix: of courseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Felix: If she wants to pay all the bills... She is my

guesttttttttttt LOL

Ying-Lan: ^Really.. you are a macho...

Maggi: still no comment

Michael C: OK. If I ever go to Brazil I'll say I'm macho!

Felix: I am a macho in the sense that I like women

Ying-Lan: ^But you don't like your wife work out, right?

Maggi: macho comes from how you treat women...

Felix: yes michael, you just to play the role well, you have to

stratch your trunk in public too.. LOL

Michael C: No way!

Maggi: LOL

Felix: scratch

Felix: ROFL

Ying-Lan: Trunk?

Maggi: he missed the beginning Felix

Maggi: no fair

Michael C: I think I'll skip Brazil then!

Felix: explain to him the meaning of trunk maggi

Maggi: none of the others are going to understand this

conversation.

Michael C: mmmm?

Maggi: do I have to?

Michael C: I think you should.....

Maggi: oh dear...why is it always me...?

Michael C: You enjoy it.....

Maggi: an appendage Michael

Michael C: Yeh well that's what I figured!

Maggi: I thought you would

Felix: @64,64 !It's Felix

Michael C: So people do this a lot in Brazil Felix?

Felix: i am back

Maggi: Felix is having tech problems again.

Felix: yes Michael

Michael C: Got any photos of this?

Maggi: well, they have hanger parties don't they?

Felix: dont you Maggi??

Maggi: You don't do that in OZ

Felix: photos??

Michael C: Course not......

Maggi: They don't in the US as far as I know.

Felix: dont you have hanger parties in Australia? I doubt it

Felix: you are faraway USA from a long time MAggi.. ehehe

Michael C: To be honest Felix I don't know. i don't mix in scuh

circles.

Felix: Me neiher..

Michael C: such circles

Maggi: They have nudist camps here...

Felix: But I have heard about them

Felix: nudist camp is not what we are talking about.

Michael C: Nudist camps are innocent.

Maggi: at such a place you wouldn't need to have a hanger party

Felix: I think so..

Michael C: Aren't they?

Felix: innocent in some way...

Maggi: natural

Felix: But it's embarrasing to get it UP in front of others.. I

wouldnt be comfortable in a nudist camp

Maggi: people who go there just want the freedom to be themselves

Michael C: But your Palace body is very attractive Felix....

Maggi: nobody gets it up

Felix: but i have clothes on michael

Michael C: Watch it Maggie!

Felix: of course they do Maggi.. come on...

Michael C: I mean that other avatar you have Felix.

Maggi: no they don'T

Felix: you have never seen an erection in a nudist camp ?

Maggi: it is a place to relax.

Maggi: like the sauna...

Michael C: What kind of question is that?!

Maggi: it is not a place to get it up...

Felix: No, I am not talking dirty.. Honestly

Maggi: no

Michael C: Nothing to do with the topic.......but I have to go.....

Maggi: not when the people are there to relax

Michael C: ...my som needs some help with his homework.

Michael C: I promised to help him.

Maggi: a voyeur maybe would do that

Felix: The point is that I said I wouldnt feel comfortable having

an erection in front of other... It's embarassing.. Understand what I mean now

Maggi?

Felix: Not a voyeur but someone who is not used to that kind of

place.. A first-second visitor for example

Felix: have a nice week Michael

Maggi: yes...but that is not necessary in a nudist camp

Michael C: So goodnight everyone. I'll look forward to reading the end

of this conversation.

Michael C: Have a good week.

Ying-Lan: Good bye michalec.

Maggi: I think we will finish it in private

Felix: not necessary.. But it's a call of the nature... If you are

not used to it you can go through an embarrassing situation like that

Felix: ok

Felix: I think Ying is so comfortable with this talk

Felix: Sorry Ying.

Ying-Lan: I AM TIRED.

Ying-Lan: ^NOTHING IN MY MIND.

Felix: so you dont need to yell

Maggi: I need to go too

Felix: Me too

Ying-Lan: ^It's time to say bye.

Felix: I have 3 movies to watch

Ying-Lan: That's great!

Felix: Yesterday I watched the Rescue of Soldier Ryan

Felix: Is the name correct?

Maggi: I have to finish my salad and go to a grill partyx

Ying-Lan: I think I need some sleep now.

Ying-Lan: grill party?

Maggi: Not sure of the title in English Felix

Felix: ok

Maggi: yes, where you barbeque

Felix: Have a nice grill party (whatever it is)

Felix: at this time??

Ying-Lan: see you.

Ying-Lan: next week.
