Chat with Ying Lan, MAD Maggi, and Vance

April 11, 1999

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Ying-Lan: ^I am sorry for being late.

Maggi: Hi Ying!

Ying-Lan: sorry

Ying-Lan: ^I have just arrived at home.

Vance: Hi YL. Nice to see you. Hope you didn't run home just for us.

Ying-Lan: ^The last sentence is right?

Vance: Perfect. You have just arrived home.

Ying-Lan: ^I drove my car.

Ying-Lan: ^What are you talking about?

Vance: To "run home" is an idiom. It means to hurry home.

Ying-Lan: ^I see.

Ying-Lan: Hi, maggi,. and Vance. What's up?

Vance: Maggi was telling me how hard it is to find the right man.

Ying-Lan: ^I agree the point.

Ying-Lan: ^It is very hard to find the Mr. Right.

Ying-Lan: ^Especially for woman who is already over 35 years old.

Ying-Lan: ^Especially for a woman who is already over 35 years old.

Vance: I think that 35 is a beautiful age for a woman, but I'm a mature man.

Ying-Lan: ^Do the Russia attche the North Europe countries?.. I mean the war.

Ying-Lan: ^Does the Russia attack the North Europe countries?.. I mean the war.

Vance: Is this a development today? I'll check CNN.

Ying-Lan: ^I don't know that... I have heard about the Russia planned to do...

Ying-Lan: ^But I am not sure it is true or not.

Maggi: The Russians are just blowing hot air...

Ying-Lan: ^Actually, I am worry about it... wait, what is the hot air?

Maggi: It is not true.

Maggi: Just talk Ying.

Ying-Lan: ^The Russia just talk ,,, God Bless.

Maggi: They don't like being left out and it is close to home.

Ying-Lan: ^Do you think it is too much for the war?

Maggi: They will not go to war.

Ying-Lan: ^You mean that they stopped the fight...

Maggi: I meant the Russians...

Ying-Lan: Oh... too bad.

Maggi: No, NATO cannot stop until Milosevic stops.

Ying-Lan: ^I just though this war may be compared with the Vietnam War.

Vance: Try http://www.cnn.com/US/9904/11/albright.nato.01/

Ying-Lan: ^The Goverment had planned to flight with them in a short time but it will extend to a long time.

Maggi: news propaganda...nothing like Vietnam.

Ying-Lan: I hope I was wrong.

Vance: It discusses how US Sec of State Albright will go to Oslo to meet with the Russian Foreign minister, and why.

Maggi: the only reason they are there is to stop him from another Bosnia in Kosovo.

Vance: I think there is no point to war if you don't force a change of government.

Vance: Vietnam, Korea, Iraq were all wars where Americans fought without the goal of toppliing the government, so the end of the war was not satisfactory.

Maggi: and this time there is a united front in Europe to do just that.

Ying-Lan: ^What is the goal of this war?

Ying-Lan: ^Why did they do it?

Vance: That's a good question. I hope it's to get rid of Milosovich.

Ying-Lan: ^I was confused...

Ying-Lan: ^It is a history problem in this area.

Maggi: first to stop ethnic cleansing of Kosovo

Ying-Lan: ^The peopel hates another people. You can not solve it by war. War always keeps the hate continuing...

Vance: Kosovo appears to have been pretty much cleansed.

Ying-Lan: ^maggi, I just receive your email.

Maggi: yes...

Ying-Lan: ^let me check it.

Vance: That's the terrible thing about Milosovich. People were living together despite a history of hate, and now that serbs have murdered and raped, the hate will go on and on ..

Maggi: hate is hard to stop

Maggi: peace is harder than hate.

Ying-Lan: ^It is like that God wants to destroy the world.

Ying-Lan: ^HE lets people hate each other.

Maggi: It is just some people are more interested in power.

Maggi: It is easier to kill someone you hate.

Ying-Lan: ^Some leaders of these country fool their people.

Maggi: it is called brainwashing sometimes ...

Ying-Lan: ^The pople (citivizen) ,... they do'nt understand that. The Crowd is bland.

Maggi: Oh...I forgot...Felix can't come today but he sends his regards.

Vance: I'm glad that NATO has finally acted to stop it, but it's a tragedy that the Yugoslav people have to suffer as well.

Vance: The crowd are unquestioning, like sheep, is that what you mean?

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, you got it.

Ying-Lan: ^What do you say?

Maggi: I am not so sure they are sheep...

Maggi: ...it is not easy to get objective information.

Ying-Lan: ^Some are not

Maggi: without it, it is difficult to get people to see the light of reality.

Ying-Lan: ^The fact is they have no idea about the real Democracy.. Even thought in Taiwan, we have been learning how to be a Democracy country.

Maggi: the majority will take convincing in Jugoslavia.

Maggi: they lived a long time under Tito and communism.

Vance: Suppose Canada decided to drive all the Canadians by force from Quebec, or suppose American police decided to send all the Mexicans in California back to Mexico by murdering their men and ...

Ying-Lan: ^People will wake up from the dark night. First, they should been painful.

Maggi: I see it in East Germany.

Vance: burning their homes. If this were happening in your country, wouldn't the people see it, even if the gov't were trying to hide it?

Maggi: True Vance...and would the rest of the world just watch and do nothing?

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, In California and Texa, there is no body who wants to go back to Mexico.

Maggi: The people in Jugoslavia mostly don't know what is going on in Kosovo.

Ying-Lan: ^For those peopel, History is gone. History just is history.

Maggi: There is a blanket on the media.

Vance: Exactly, but the Albanians in Kosovo didn't want to leave Kosovo.

Vance: I heard Serbs on the street say before the bombing that it was there country, the Albanians had just moved into it, and they felt they had a right to take their land back.

Maggi: I was amazed on Tesl that one teacher in Jugoslavia wrote about her school being bombed....but was totally unaware of what was happening next door in Kosovo that prompted the bombing.

Ying-Lan: ^When people satisfy with their life, the hate will be forgotten. If people could be stuff their stomack and soul... they will be teach to hate another peopel by those dirty politican.

Vance: Yes, exactly. You hear that all the time. When they complain about that, you want to ask them, do you feel any responsibility for what your soldiers have done, the same thing and worse??

Maggi: This goes back to some battle in 1387.

Maggi: they actually feel like the underdogs.

Ying-Lan: ^When people satisfy with their life, the hate will be forgotten. If people could not be stuff their stomack and soul... they will be teach to hate another peoplel by those dirty politican.

Vance: This is the sad part. I think people were satisfied, eating well and sleeping at night, and it was the dirty politicians who started the conflict in spite of that.

Maggi: I was surprised that she even had Internet access.

Ying-Lan: ^maggi,. sorry, I don't understand who is she?

Vance: With Internet access you'd think she could get CNN or any number of objective news sources. Maybe web access is blocked there.

Maggi: I am not a violent person, but someone should snuff out Milosevich and save us all this suffering.

Maggi: She is a teacher in Jugoslavia. She wanted to know how she could teach English when the Americans and British bombed her school.

Vance: She is a teacher in Yugoslavia who wrote on a list for English teachers her reactions to the bombing.

Ying-Lan: @64,64 !It's Ying-Lan

Vance: I've got to go soon. Ying Lan, I want to thank you for writing to the eclass. You started a good conversation.

Ying-Lan: ^Thanks for your reply.

Maggi: I finally wrote too!#

Ying-Lan: ^You know.. Felix spoke too much to hear.

Ying-Lan: ^kidding.

Maggi: Me too...I have a pile of work to get done for this week!

Ying-Lan: ^Sorry, Maggi. I wa climbing your works mountains.

Vance: Yes, that's what I was trying to tell him. In a nice way.

Maggi: I told feel to tape his mouth for awhile...:-)

Vance: works mountains?

Ying-Lan: ^But it was a nice start, was't it? It means felix'a mail.

Maggi: I told him...I can be direct with him...LOL

Ying-Lan: ^I sent my problem to Maggi.

Ying-Lan: ^I added the quantity of her works.

Ying-Lan: ^Do you know what I said?

Vance: You added to her mountain of work.

Ying-Lan: yeap

Ying-Lan: ^I know you are so busy... but.. so so sorry.

Maggi: you're fast Vance! Wow!

Vance: huh ... me? uh ... f a s t ??

Maggi: Happy to help Ying Lan...:-) really

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, If nobody told me my mistakes, I will be wrong all the way.

Vance: You would be wrong all the time.

Maggi: Not true Ying...

Vance: Felix made the same conditional mistake in his email where he asked me to correct his errors.

Ying-Lan: ^Accuracy against fluency..

Maggi: We still understand you...or ask for you to phrase it or explain it again.

Vance: Yes, fluency is more important. Accuracyfollows.

Ying-Lan: ^would be

Maggi: By using it you will improve automatically.

Ying-Lan: ^Automatically????

Ying-Lan: I hope so.

Maggi: Yes...it is true...without any effort.

Ying-Lan: ^I think you help me to improve my English.

Maggi: I see it happen every day.

Ying-Lan: ^It is not true, Maggi. If people don't read enough and listen engout.. they will not got any improvement.

Maggi: Vance is eating dust in the UAE...I am soaking wet here...how about you Ying?

Ying-Lan: ^It is not true, Maggi. If people don't read enough and listen engout.. they will not get any improvement.

Maggi: they will not see any improvement...

Ying-Lan: ^It is nice... It is between Spring and Summer.

Vance: I'm on a long distance call

Ying-Lan: ^What does you mean the last one?

Maggi: using it is more important once you have enough passive imput.

Maggi: ok...we ladies will just carry on chattering...:-)

Ying-Lan: ^So. the out-put has to be equal the in-put?

Ying-Lan: ^Vance, Talking to your family??

Maggi: what do I mean...well, you have 5 times more passive knowledge in your native language than active.

Maggi: The same will be true when you learn another language.

Ying-Lan: passive ...?

Vance: sorry, no, some job applicant calling from overseas, not my department

Maggi: You cannot learn 100 percent active.

Ying-Lan: Really?

Maggi: that means you understand but do not use it.

Maggi: really...that is how your brain works.

Maggi: if you try to learn 100 percent active you will get very frustrated.

Ying-Lan: ^You know I have seen a American spoke Taiwaness better than me....

Maggi: I speak better German than some Germans sometimes.

Ying-Lan: ^Really, it is funny.

Maggi: Until they use dialect...:-)

Vance: OK, I'm going to go. You guys can keep talking.

Ying-Lan: ^Because we had been taught any class in Chinese.

Maggi: then I am lost...

Vance: My family is waiting (not to mention a beer on my balcony).

Ying-Lan: Bye Vance.

Maggi: Ok Vance...have a nice day...I should be going too.

Vance: bye, nice talking to you.

Ying-Lan: Me too.
